Last Week’s Jams (8.4 – 8.8)

All apologies are owed this week, as our playlist is rather short. I’m not sure if that’s because I’m trying to dig for the stuff not getting covered on the ‘Gum or just a slow news week the last few outings. Nonetheless, we were high on lots of rad Austin (and adjacent tunes); we had new stuff from Gus Baldwin, Day Friend, Alien Eyelid, San Gabriel and a new video from Moonkill…all repping the city/state fairly well. New Weakened Friends seems to have gathered the big hitters, especially with that Buckethead link-up! Would suggest checking out the Maura Weaver tune we premiered, but you do you folks!

Oh Rose Prep For Art EP

I love a good plot twist in a musical number, and when this Oh Rose tune dropped into the mix, it completely felt like it was revolving around some sort of ghostly ballad…but that changed. The guitars pop up, and begin meandering waywardly, crawling in the distance behind Olivia Rose’s voice; her performance sprawls across the floor, spreading out to all corners as the guitars and bass buoy every little nuanced note. A nice little backing vocal gets added in too, and you begin to embrace the spiritual warmth of the tune itself, a reminder that we can turn to music for solace. Look for the group’s For Art EP on August 15th via Antiquated Future.

Oh Rose Share Baby

I will admit, that the “wah, wah” present from the beginning of this new Oh, Rose song might be off-putting to folks, but don’t give up, just give into the song. Singer Olivia Rose has this remarkable voice; it has this striking elegance that soars, yet is able to retreat to the faintest whisper. As you get through the song’s building emotion, the earlier “wah, wah” moments seem like a build up, and perhaps a thematic reference to the song’s title. That build up is unleashed just beyond the 2 minute mark, which is where I truly fell in love with the song before going back to and listen again and again. This tune appears on While My Father Sleeps, the new album out August 23rd via Park the Van.

So Pleased To Meet You: Oh, Rose

11231221_978694022154551_8598250288213676264_oOccasionally, when I’m on the lookout for great new tracks I stumble upon a band that really just deserves some attention. Today, I’d like to introduce you to Olympia, Washington natives, Oh, Rose, who will win your heart with their hodgepodge sound of lo-fi indie rock. Last month, they released Seven, their debut full length album, and it’s up on their Soundcloud Page for you to stream. Personally, when I first took a listen to “Lottery” below, I was pulled in by the distinctive vocal yelp of leading lady, Olivia Rose. The song is a nice jam: fuzzy guitars and a quick drum beat will certainly get you dancing on this Tuesday.
