Fresh New Pop from Generationals

generationalsWe’ve long supported Generationals here on our site, and personally, I’m excited for their new album, Heza.  It’s clear that they’ve been messing with their formula just a little bit, which has some people a little weary; they haven’t let me down before, so why worry about such things now.  One thing the group always guarantee is infectious hooks that get stuck in your mind, and record player, for days or months.  I’m tapping my toes just bobbing to this song as we speak.  If you dig what you’re hearing, then get your hands ready for their new album when it hits stores on April 2nd on Polyvinyl Records.

Feel Good Pop From Saturday Looks Good To Me

Saturday+Looks+Good+to+Me

I have long followed the career of Polyvinyl act Saturday Looks Good To Me and their beautiful take on 60’s style keyboard driven pop music.  Their music has always been light, fun, and certainly something that could immediately put you into a better mood.  Today I have one of those songs entitled “Invisible Friend” and it definitely fits into that SLGTM mold of breezy pop music.  In even better news, the band are planning to release new album One Kiss Ends All on May 10th via the aforementioned Polyvinyl Record label.  A pre-order of that album is up now.

New Bright Pop From Painted Palms

paintedpalmscover

Painted Palms are a band that have played the opening role to numerous touring acts coming through town like Of Montreal and Starfucker, to name a few.  To be honest, I’ve never paid much attention to the band until today when I found myself jamming along to this new song “Click”.  It’s a bright and sunny pop song that could easily be compared to the aforementioned bands that they’ve toured with in Austin.  However you want to describe or compare it, you can’t deny that you’re already bobbing your head with that catchy ass beat.

This tune is the B-side to the group’s new 7″ single Carousel which is available for shipping on March 22nd via Polyvinyl Records.  You can also hear the A-side streaming via the Painted Palms bandcamp page.

Dreamy Track from Psychic Twin

1750This new jam from Psychic Twin, a recent signee to Polyvinyl Records, is something that seems straight out of the bedroom pop of the 80s.  It opens with this trickling it of synth work, but then the entrance of the vocals switch it up, giving it a more enchanting feeling. Personally, the fact that it doesn’t really stay in one place for too long is quite intriguing, listening to the song move back and forth between tropical and bedroom pop.  If you’re into what the group is doing, and you should be, then find yourself picking up their Strangers 7″ on March 5th.

Catching Up With Starfucker

Seems they are going to mellow us out before the dance party.

Starfucker has been a persoanl favorite of mine for some time now and not just because of the catchy name. The jams, the dancy jams, they pwn all teh h4x0rs. But the latest tease of the new material is a smooth refrain from the previous two tracks.

They are playing The Mohawk just before SxSW. The full length Miracle Mile is due 2/19 on Polyvinyl.

New Jam From Sonny & The Sunsets

We were sort of holding off until we could get the go ahead to post an MP3 of this new Sonny & The Sunsets tune, and today is that lucky day.  The new song, possibly heard elsewhere as a stream, is a mellow slow-burning tune called “Pretend You Love Me”.  This one is a bit more of a contemplative jam from the band compared to what we’ve seen in the past, but I dig it none the less.  Be sure to keep your eyes tuned toward the June 26th release date of the new LP Longtime Companion coming via the band’s new label Polyvinyl Records.

Free Polyvinyl 15 Year Sampler

Polyvinyl Records has been home to some of my favorite bands over the years and probably deserves a lot of credit for me discovering real indie music in high school.  What with bands like Aloha, Rainer Maria, American Football, etc. the label was one of the hottest and biggest in the emo/post-emo world.  It’s hard to believe the label is already 15 years old in 2011 and they continue to put out great albums year after year.  To celebrate their 15 years in existence, Polyvinyl has put together an incredible sampler featuring a whopping 30 songs from their finest acts over the years.  Old school songs like “Killing a Camera” from Braid are enough to make this a must download for me.  Hell, I’ll even entice you with a free download of that old school jam below.  Check out this sampler now and enjoy.

New Music from Loney Dear

There’s always something special about listening to Loney Dear.  On the last effort, Dear John, I found myself drawn into some really spectacularly quiet songs that fit right into where I was emotionally.  Emil’s voice has this memorable pitch to it, and the construction of the songs has always done wonders to give it the most power.  This new track comes from the group’s upcoming record on Polyvinyl Records, Hall Music.  You can hear the song building slowly in your ear, melodies rising all the while, waiting for Emil to unleash his vocals.  There’s definitely a more orchestrated approach to the record based on what we’ve heard so far, and that’s got me looking forward to see what the rest of Hall Music will sound like.  Give this track a good once or twice over.

New Music from Braid

I was fortunate enough to tour alongside Bob Nanna and his posse during the Hey Mercedes days, and while I look back at that, the one thing I remember about those guys were how incredibly down to earth and real they were, despite the fact that they were 3/4 of Braid, which was one of my favorites.  So, I’m happy to see that Braid’s original lineup has reformed, or rather, reconvened, in order to give us some new tunes.  Polyvinyl will do us the honor of releasing the new EP, titled Closer to Closed, but says there are no plans for a full-length, as of yet.  This first listen is a lot less discordant and angular, but the maturity demonstrates that they still have the passion, and obviously the songwriting chops to keep on trucking. I hope you love this track as much as I do.

Asobi Seksu – Flourescence

Rating: ★★★½☆

With Fluorescence as their fifth studio album, Asobi Seksu has been around since approximately 2001, crafting dream pop music that is sure to stand out from anything else you’ve heard from the genre. It isn’t because the music is that drastically different from the others, it’s due to the voice of front woman Yuki Chikudate. At points the vocals don’t really feel like they match, but it’s this sort of calculated chaos that Asobi Seksu has ridden upon since their beginning.

From the start of this album, you can grasp a clear idea of what this group is aiming for with this release: shoe gaze/psychedelic pop that resonates with their listeners. Hell, you could grasp this from the title and album art alone. The first song, “Coming Up,” begins with a bit of synth, some rolling drum beats, the shake of some tambourine and the borderline falsetto vocals of Chikudate. After a few moments the distorted and swirling guitar kicks in, surrounding the listener with its dreamy aura. From here, the song really takes off, mixing the already present high-pitched vocals of Chikudate, with that of James Hanna for some contrast. For a start, you can get much better than this: the buzzing hooks of the guitar entice, while the vocals make you wonder where else the group can go with the album.

Following this lush first number comes an example of the calculated chaos that I mentioned earlier. While the instruments take a grungier, dug in sound, the vocals do not and are left to waver over the top. One might think that a whispery vocal would be the compliment to such a sound, but instead it is accompanied with a full voice, oscillating a lot between highs and lows. For some parts of “Trails,” it comes across as slightly disjointed, but at others it feels so right. Towards the end of the number comes a breakdown that should surely prove amazing live. While not the highest pitch, the vocals are entrenched and dripping with emotion and feeling, as though they are being pushed to their very limit.

The rest of the album follows suit of these two songs, but some do not quite reach their caliber. Depending on your personal flavor, that could mean that the songs that delight me fall flat to you; there are so many elements to this shoe-gazy sound that everyone can find something that they like about it. Whether it be on the long epic track of “Leave the Drummer Out,” or on the short “Deep Weird Sleep,” there is bound to be something that sticks with you.

While Flourescence is not the most interesting album that is going to come out this year, or maybe even this week, it is still good enough to merit some of your time. It’s light and fluffy music that is perfect for the start of spring lingering around the corner.
