Plants and Animals Return!

img-plants-and-animals_113615648555Man I used to really be into Canadian group Plants and Animals several years ago and I honestly wasn’t sure if the band was still making music or not. You can likely now imagine my excitement when I just got word today that the band is making a return after a long 4 year absence. A brand new album is planned for release in the Spring featuring this awesome new single “No Worries Gonna Find Us”. It’s a stunning, driving pop song with a catchy hook and a nice beat keeping your head nodding throughout. Dig.

Waltzed in From the Rumblingis due out on April 28th via Secret City Records.

Bright Pop from Boyfriends

boyfriendsBare with this track; I know the opening 30 seconds are a bit strange, but this new Boyfriends tune is definitely a fun bit of pop music to kick off the week. There’s angular guitar stabs accented by synth stabs. Vocals are delivered in an off-kilter manner, leaving listeners with distinct memories; hold on for the chorus too, and the voice gets some warm harmonizing by the best of the band. Pop music, and this brand of pop in particular, is meant to be fun, so sit back and enjoy yourself. Why so serious?

Lo-Fi Pop from Reptaliens

reptalienIn my mind, lo-fi music is meant to sound intimate and personal, but the sounds coming from Portland’s Reptaliens is quite a bit more. Musically, you get the feeling it was recorded on the floor of the bedroom, filled in perhaps with some studio help, but the central theme of the song runs behind the calming delivery of singer Bambi. It’s the perfect blend of dream-pop aesthetics with an other-worldly recording, elevating the song to a certified hit; this song’s perfect for any time of day. Look for more from the band as they solidify the project in 2016.

Some Psych Pop From Flaurals

unnamed (17)I could pretend I knew something about Denver based pop band Flaural prior to today, but I’d be lying through my teeth. I will however be giving the band my attention after hearing this bright new single entitled “Nonnie”. I’m reminded of bands like Yeasayer or even our old friends Suckers with a bit more of that psych vibe as the driving force. Consider me a fan starting right now.

Flaural will release their new EPOver Imaginary Cigaretteson March 12th.

New Grace Vonderkuhn Tune

graceThe last time we heard from Grace Vonderkuhn she was blasting the distorted guitars through our ears on her self-titled EP. But, this new track sees Grace exploring some new ground, which definitely is holding tightly on to my ears. There’s a really simple beat that repeats throughout the track, holding the song in place; her voice has clearly been strengthened, bringing about pop notes that might not have been as evident on her earlier work. This song has me looking forward to what she brings to the table in the near future, so keep your ears peeled for more work from this 24 year old.

Poppy Terribly Yours Track

terriblyNot sure why more people aren’t taking a listen to this great new Terribly Yours track. It’s got everything you really need in a hit: hooks, electronic touches, solid melody. Honestly, this is the type of song that you find yourself putting on your favorite mixes, sharing it with friends…always bringing a smile to everyone’s face. Still no word from the buzzworthy artist on when we’ll get an official release, but if it’s filled with hits like these, it’s going to be hard to turn away from anything done with this project.

Adan & Xavi Ready Debut Album

adaIn case you weren’t aware, there’s a couple of Spanish degrees and minors floating around behind the scenes at ATH, so we’re always intrigued by Spanish lyrics, especially when they’re draped over warm pop structures. On this new single from Adan & Xavi, they blend a strummed guitar, slide guitar and super-steady percussion to build this casual pop background for the delightful vocals. But, just because this track gives into the influences of Adan’s time in Mexico City, don’t be entirely sold on them using Spanish, as they’ve also got another track floating around that pulls in some classic Rod Stewart vibes. Don’t be afraid of pop without pretension…it’s good for you. You can hear their self-titled debut on March 4th via Everloving Records.

Playing Catch-Up: Socorro!

flavorsFinally feel like we’re getting our feet underneath us here, so checking in on some of my favorite labels that I’ve not looked in on in a bit…Lolipop Records being one of those. Just recently they released Flavor of the Day, the newest effort from Socorro!. As the description hints, there are hints of jangling but you can also feel a more classic rock inflection in these songs. The whole cassette is out now, but if that’s not your thing, you can go grab the songs directly from the band themselves right HERE. Enjoy.

Some Psych Pop From Keeps

unnamed (9)Here’s a nice bit of psych pop I found today coming your way from Nashville based outfit Keeps. The song I have for you, entitled “Translucent Girl”, could be likened to a mixture of Surfer Blood and Tame Impala with a bit of 60’s style pop thrown in there somewhere. Though it might be winter, this song will fit right in with it’s spring time album release date.

Brief Spirit will hit streets on March 4th via Old Flame Records.

10444002_464584560343471_4365437836699531453_nEarlier this year I discovered L.A. based The Bulls and what proved to bea stellar EP entitledSmall Problems. Since that time, I’ve been eagerly awaiting what to expect from the ladies and today I was surprised with this new single “Prudence”. Imagine if you will that somehow Cults and Young Galaxy had a baby together and that’s about what you’d be hearing here. To weird? Hit play then and make your own comparisons.

“Prudence” is part of a digital single due out on January 15th via Diet Pink Records. Pre-order here.
