Day Wave Return Already

11337002_401226620061420_3011181159598881531_oTalk about an explosion! It’s been a banner year for Day Wave who burst onto the scene earlier this year with his Headcase EP. And, without even taking a breath, he’s back with a new track for your pop ears. This one has a little bit of a hook that reminds me of early stuff from the Drums; it’s got a jangling surfy guitar sound with a driving beat…pretty infectious. Honestly, I should have posted this yesterday, but I wanted to save it for Friday, as it’s a pure Friday pop hit for you. I’m sure he’ll flood us with more new tunes in the near future as he readies a full length.

Darwin Deez Is Pure Fun

darwinA lot of time I find myself caught up in the world of artistry or hype or both, but sometimes, you just want a great pop song.  Something that makes you smile, something undeniable: this is Darwin Deez, and it’s always been Darwin Deez.  He writes infectious tune after infectious tune, coming across like a radio friendly Pedro the Lion.  His newest album, Double Down, is just around the corner with a September 18th release date scheduled by Lucky Number.  I don’t know about you, but it never hurts just to have a little fun with your hits.

Pleased to Meet You: Gobbinjr

gobbinjrI really have no idea what lurks behind the name of Gobbinjr or the brand new album manlang, but musically, it really quite intersesting, if not quite pertinent to this week’s listening rotation. It’s all the work of New York’s Emma Witmer, and there’s a couple of tracks I’d like you to listen to today. “BB Gurl” is the first single, and it’s a bit of twinkling pop, akin to early sounds of Rilo Kiley.  Still, there’s this dreamier sound hiding behind the song, which is why I wanted to share “No Name” too, as it’s one of the album’s best tunes. It takes on a more solemn approach, and in doing so, it tugs at the heart quite a bit…stellar tune. You can order it from Gold Flake Tapes if you’re interested, as you should be!

Edgy Pop From TheBulls

10444002_464584560343471_4365437836699531453_nThis new tune “Rumors”, from L.A. based TheBulls, caught my ear today as something you peoples might enjoy for your weekend playlist.  You’ll definitely hear some bright pop sensibilities with just enough edge via grungy guitars and hushed vocals to keep things interesting.  Think Metric, but with a more simple and focused sound.  I’ll buy that any day of the week.

TheBulls will drop Small Problems on August 28th via Diet Pink Records.

ATX Spotlight: More New Rain Collectors

rainWe were fortunate enough to premiere the first Rain Collectors single of the year, and now the charming Austin duo has another tune for you all to enjoy. Santiago, who plays in other well-known ATX acts like Growl takes the lead for the opening moments of the track, then trading places so Blair, of AMA, can come in and do her thing…only for the two to unite during the chorus.  Honestly, there’s probably lots of little musical nods they’re making, but you can’t pinpoint just one sound, making the group sound utterly refreshing whilst still feeling wholly familiar. Let’s keep our focus on these guys as they continue to charm their way into our constant listening rotation.

Steady Jam From Low

mainLow has been around the game for years now and have put out more than their fair share of hits.  With such a history, you’d think the well had run dry, but as evidenced by this jam “What Part Of Me”, the band is still capable of producing gems.  This one is a short and sweet lo fi track worthy of being labeled a pop hit.  Press play and enjoy.

Low will drop Ones and Sixes via Sub Pop on September 11th.

Spend Friday With The Parlor

the-parlor-promo-2015-650x400Altamont, NY based The Parlor has been the recipient of some major praise from online music critics recently.  Their style is this sort of breezy, while quirky bit of pop music genius.  Below is a sample of their sound with new track “Wishes in the Sheets”.  Hopefully you’ll find something to enjoy here as we ease into the weekend.

Wahzu Wahzu is due out September 18th via B3nson.

Drifting Pop from Uncle Bobby

bobUpon pressing play on this new single from Uncle Bobby, I was immediately transferred to a semi-dream state, influenced by the opening moments, accentuated by the sitar in the background.  It’s an interesting tune in that I don’t really think there’s a precise genre that it fits into, though it definitely aligns itself with pop music.  There’s little tinges of psychedelia, but there’s also a bedroom pop aspect that really hits home with me.  It’s the first glimpse of the work of the multi-instrumentalist, who will be releasing a full EP later on this year.

Playful Single from Owl & Mouse

owlzImmediately, there’s a simplicity to this song from Owl & Mouse.  It’s just a little ukulele backed by a solemn piano chord, soon accompanied by Hannah Botting’s voice. Still, the basic approach wraps itself around your ears, drawing you close into the lyrics, discussing the emotions of saying goodbye.  As the song unfolds there’s some really lush accompaniment filling in the space that lays empty…there’s added strings and really light percussion.  It’s a remarkable start for the group’s debut, Departures, which is being released by Fika Recordings later this year.  Find yourself falling in love with this number today.
