Let’s Talk Free Week

Date 1/2/13-1/12/13
Location All Over
Doors TBD
Tickets Free (duh)

The schedule is pending, but the list of artists signed on to do Free Week this year is long and impressive, much like my morning commute.

Created as a way to treat the locals to some locals while the kids were home for the holidays, Free Week continues to expand adding numbers to the venue list and performer count. This year will be pretty big, a Free Week and a half actually, occupying the Transmission locations of The Mohawk, Holy Mountain, Beerland and Red7. Peep the poster of artists for the festivities on Red River, chock full of Austin Town Hall Faves including Tiger Waves, Shivery Shakes, Fleshlights, TV Torso, Orthy and Grape St.

Stay tuned for schedules and be ready to hit the streets.

One event’s schedule I know for sure is Modern Outsider’s Free Week show on 1/4 at Emo’s East featuring Ume, The Calm Blue Sea, The Black and White Years and My Jerusalem. Get details and say you’re going here.

Show Review: White Arrows @ Red7 (9/20)

Last Thursday was a busy night for music. Poor Fiona.

After taking Dustin Wong, The Walkmen and Beach House, ATH hit two other shows including one we were presenting at Red7. White Arrows was back in town as a headliner after playing the opening slot for Beat Connection, a show where the headliner was bested. It was good to see these guys come back through and put forth another great set.

Read on for a few deets and pics.

Show Pics: Tycho & The Album Leaf @ Red7 (9/7)

Friday was a busy night. On my agenda, Pujol, Ariel Pink, Tycho and The Album Leaf.

Tycho asked The Album Leaf join them (him) on tour. This is a seriously good bill for any fan of mid-to-down tempo, beautifully crafted songs. To get to see both on the same night was a treat. It was impressive that the show sold out despite being in the larger space outdoors at Red7. Quick polling told me that the crowd was actually half and half as to who they were there to see, maybe Tycho in the lead. I guarantee that both bands gained fans.

Show Review: Tanlines @ Red7 (8/30)

Last week featured back to back nights at Red7, outside to inside. Wild Nothing was fantastic. I had relatively light expectations for Tanlines. When I found out it had sold out, even given the smaller capacity of the inside venue, I was quite surprised. I think the band was, too.

Tanlines is Jesse Cohen and Eric Emm. They throw down calypso-electro dance jams. They asked Love Inks to open. Learning Secrets spun between sets.

Show Pics: Wild Nothing at Red7 (8/29)

Late night for the photo guy, album reviewer, significant others and assorted friends.

Wild Nothing last played Red7 on the coldest day of the year in 2011. I remember icy sidewalks and legit need for wool hats. This time around, the show moved to the larger outdoor stage to accomodate demand with a swing of the weather pendulum towards 90F at show time. Austin’s Boy Friend and Super Lite Bike opened.

Click though for a few thoughts and plenty of pics.

It’s sold out. Sorry. It is my fault. I hyped their album as one of the best of the year, so far. I didn’t know that would mean you couldn’t buy tix at the door. Tanlines is gonna lay down some Brooklyn Electro jams Thursday night. Love Inks and Learning Secrets will open.

Show Review: King Tuff @ Red7 (7/9)

I had back to back nights this week of the louder beer-throwing types. The first show was at Red7 featuring King Tuff as the headliner of a four band blast of in your face southern rock tinged punk. The King brought along Natural Child, who killed as an opener for Hunx, and asked locals The Vomettes and The Best to open.

There was a little crowd surfing towards the end of the night, everyone departing sweaty and satisfied.

Thoughts and pics if you click the Read More. Do it.

Some great shows are sneaking up on us in the middle stretch of July…

The next we’d like to highlight is King Tuff headlining a four band loud-and-fast at Red7 next Monday night. Supporting King Tuff on the tour is Natural Child. They put down a bad ass set opening for Hunx & His Punx at Mohawk a few months back. Really looking forward to seeing them again with a King Tuff chaser.

Also on the bill are The Vomettes and The Best.

Show Review: The Men @ Red7 (6/30)

We knew what we were in for. We saw it coming. We ignored the warning signs. I was heading into my third night of shows in a row, fourth in five days. Things were escalating. Lower Dens -> Howard Jones -> Nada Surf -> The Men. After seeing their sets during SxSW, we knew we had to be at Red7 to see The Men. They made the 2012 top albums so far list, what kind of music-writer-types would we be if we passed up seeing one of our favorites?

Cruddy, Creamers and Destruction Unit opened.

I have been chewing on this review in my brain since the show and I think I have boiled down for you. Click through, thoughts and pics after the break…
