Black Marble Shares Feels

As I was sitting down to listen to this song, I was imagining myself dancing around my living room, entertaining the wee 1 year old that crawls about our house; it has an energetic uptick in the sample percussion. But, when Chris Stewart’s vocals come into play, they’re heavy and dark; they almost evaporate that pop sensibility in the best possible sense. It creates this great juxtaposition that definitely lands well on my end, straddling the highs and lows of music, much like we do in life. To me, this feels like the most intimate Black Marble album to date, so it’s not surprise that it is being handled by Sacred Bones Records; they’ll release Bigger Than Life on October 25th.

I’ve loved a lot of music, but one of the acts I always tried to turn folks onto was Black Marble; I’ve even used these here pages to support the project. It seems that promise is finally coming to the forefront, as today they announced their signing to Sacred Bones Records. Chris Stewart, the man behind the project, has altered his craft for this new LP; he’s admittedly pushed the vocals to the front and sort of stripped them of various effects that accompanied his earlier works. And, while this began to emerge on It’s Immaterial, the beats here are pretty sharp, yet also really sparse, letting you focus on their intent as the lyrics sink into your skin. The new LP is titled Bigger Than Life and it will be out on October 25th! There is also a scheduled tour date at Austin’s Levitation festival too!

Moon Duo Announce Stars Are the Light

I’m really hoping that this new Moon Duo single holds true for the band’s new album, Stars Are the Light. I feel like they’ve been flirting with constructing dreamy synth driven pop over the last few releases, moving further away from their original psychedelic sounds. I mean, here, there’s this beautifully soft beat, matched by the gentle shared vocals; a guitar flourishes in the middle, but then becomes just a part of the song’s emotions as the vocals return to carry the weight. The song’s latter half illustrates that there’s still room to jam it out, but the band’s focus on pop sensibility in the front half of the track has me won over. The new LP will be out on September 27th via Sacred Bones Records.

Another Lust for Youth Tune

We’re not too far off from the release of the latest Lust for Youth LP, and with that, the (now) duo have dropped another teaser track. I think this is their most playful and earnest tune; they clearly deliver their pop sensibility in the first few seconds, but they don’t just drop in and let that hook hit you over the head, instead teasing it out after the 1:15 mark. Even then, it’s brief and exuberant, hitting upon that sensation of yearning. Somehow this tune seems more sterile, revolving more on the tones of the vocals, which is a nice little twist in the album (or so I hope). Sacred Bones drop Lust for Youth on June 7th.

Lust for Youth Share By No Means

You need that perfect midweek dance track? Have you tried on this new Lust for Youth single? It’s only in the first ten seconds, but look at how much fun the dancer in the video is having! On a more serious note, the band’s slimmed down, forcing them to really focus on their craft, and if I might toss my hat into the ring, this feels like some of the best work they’ve done. They’ve got this sort of Eastern angular electronic feel that kicks the rhythm into gear, and while the vocals during the verses are about where they always are, it’s the way the chorus is delivered this round, with a kick up in the percussive element pulsing through. And is that a harmonica after the 2 minute mark? Seriously, these dang songs are on fire today! Lust for Youth drops on June 7th via Sacred Bones Records.

Institute Announce New LP

Institute is one of those band’s that pushes you off the fence; you either love the band or you hate ’em…and they could probably care less either way. Me? I love it, and so I welcome news of their forthcoming release, Readjusting the Locks. According to the press release, the band have trimmed the fat down on this record, focusing all the tracks into a concise 29 minute album run. You can get that here, where the song is ominous and haunting, almost like it’s stalking the listener from the get-go. I love how the drums pound angrily while the guitars dance in the opening moments, making way for the steadied delivery of the vocals. This new LP will be out on May 17th via Sacred Bones Records.

Lust for Youth Announce New Record

Long time fans of Lust for Youth might shudder at the thought, but it seems like the band have completely embraced their pop sensibility for their new self-titled LP. Our first listen has this pulsing brightness, breaking through the cavernous darkness usually present in the group’s tracks; the production seems a little bit more lush, with vocal turns that charm like at 1.30 mark when the line “it hurts my eyes to see you walking by yourself.” That seems to be the theme here, a brighter sonic future, but still holding onto a grim disposition in regards to the world’s state of affairs, both personal and global. Sacred Bones will be releasing this self-titled LP on June 7th.

The Holydrug Couple Share A Hazy Delight

The Holydrug Couple are on their way to releasing a new album on Sacred Bones Records, and today we’re graced with another lovely single from Hyper Super Mega. This new number, “Forever End” is a sweeping psych number–lush synths and a groovy bass line hold your hand throughout. The vocals are high pitched and chime in like another line of synth, creating a whirlwind of hazy sounds that all spiral into a hypnotizing sound towards the end of the song. Safe to say we’re pretty excited for the release ofHyper Super Megaon September 14–preorder here.

 

New Music from The Holydrug Couple

It’s becoming increasingly difficult to turn your head from The Holydrug Couple. Their last album, Mourn (2015), showed some steps in a more pop-centric direction…and it looks like Hyper Super Mega is going to take an even larger step forward. This single below is perhaps one of the band’s most accessible tunes; it offers a soul-inflected vocal crawl, while harkening to some of the pop-collage work the Flaming Lips did around the Yoshimi-era. It’s just weird enough to make turn those cool kids on, but it has this pop sensibility that supersedes any essence of cool. Look for the new LP to drop on September 14th via Sacred Bones Records.

Don’t Sleep On This New Jenny Hval Tune

Forgive me if you’ve already heard this, but Jenny Hval has just announced a new EP and shared a tune off of that forthcoming release. Maybe I’m still reeling from the new age jazz that I experienced the other night by watching King Krule’s set at Emo’s, but “Spells” has certainly struck a chord with me that I felt was somehow missing in the past with Jenny Hval’s tunes. The moment you press play on the track, you’re greeted with some sick saxophone, which continues on as a motif through the number and delightfully compliments Hval’s vocals. Completely enchanting, the number blossoms into a jazzy, trancelike blend of dream pop.
