Continuously Impressed by Wymond Miles

wymondSince the Fresh and Only‘s seem to have slowed their prolific run, it’s allowed Wymond Miles to focus on some of his solo work, which is always great. I think this new single illustrates something wholly different for him, at least in comparison to his past efforts. His voice soars in a way that I don’t think I fully gave him credit for; it’s a really strong performance on that end. The construction of the song revolves around emphatic swells, crashing into your ears at just the right time, with carefully placed calming dips. Call By Night is the title of his new album, released on July 8th via Sacred Bones Records.

Another Great Track from Psychic Ills

psychicFor some reason I hadn’t realized until today how much I was looking forward to listening to the new album from Psychic Ills. While they still adhere to some of the psychedelic vibes, their new effort has this sprawling country vibe to it. The edges are slightly darkened, longing, settling the listener into a vibe of contemplation as the song unfolds…slide guitar and all. The group will release Inner Journey Out on June 3rd via Sacred Bones Records, and you can bet I’ll be in line waiting to pick it up.

New Music from Psychic Ills

pyschicillsI like when bands quietly release tracks, knowing that the strength of the song will draw people in to their work…which happens to be the case with this new Psychic Ills tune. Listening to it, it feels like the band have sort of taken on the Spiritualized approach, turning from one sound into the darkened R&B/soul influenced folk outfit. This tune really has the feeling of Western expansion, gradually letting the song flow through your speakers. Sacred Bones Records will be releasing Inner Journey Out on June 3rd, and it looks to be one of those records you quietly enjoy, then buy copies for your friends.

Even More Lust for Youth

lustIf there’s a record that B.Gray and I are pretty excited about hearing, it has to be this upcoming Lust for Youth LP. The band has continued to grow their sound, creating some of the darkest, yet most accessible, electronic pop music around. They’ve also got a pretty intoxicating live show, which doesn’t always happen for the genre. They tossed out another single today from Compassion, so seems fitting that we stay in line with our obsession and post this new tune as well. You can hear the record when it’s released on March 18th via Sacred Bones Records. Also…check the band touring the States, including SXSW.

Shake It To This New Lust For Youth Track

12510282_668774416558512_4248295164665006888_nIt’s very important to stretch before doing body rolls, so if you haven’t warmed up already, make sure to get in some quick stretching before you press play on this track. Lust For Youth, out of Copenhagen, are bound to have you ready to hit the dance floor, or to make any floor a dance floor with this new track, “Sudden Ambitions.” This track is huge– the synths swell and bounce while the vocals are right in your face and the beat pulses heavy through the whole song. I’m telling you, this song is a great way to get your body going on a Tuesday. Take a listen and get ready for Lust For Youth’s upcoming album,Compassion, which is out March 18th, via Sacred Bones Records.

Loving This Lust for Youth

Lust For YouthBrian and I spent a few weeks after last year’s SXSW raving about the performances from Lust for Youth that we were fortunate enough to catch. On their latest single you can hear some of the gradual shifts that were made even then, providing a much more melodic approach to their crafstmanship…as opposed to their earlier, more angular, writing. They’ll be releasing their newest album, Compassion, this Spring, right during the midst of SXSW. I expect a dense array of darkened electro-pop tunes to come bursting through my speakers, and I won’t complain one bit about that. It’s being handled by Sacred Bones Records.

I Love Lust for Youth + New Single

Lust For YouthIf you were to ask Brian or I what our favorite act was at SXSW this past year, it’s likely that one of us, or both, would have Lust for Youth high up on that list. Their performances were intoxicating, which says a lot considering they’ve got a lot of electronic work in their tracks. Even better, the band has a brand new track/single that they’re releasing today via Sacred Bones Records. It’s a solid number, just like their previous work; there’s definitely been a pop-centric twist unfolding at their camp, so take a listen today. The photo pictured left was the band hanging with B after one of their sets at Beerland. Nice chaps. Nice songs.

Bonus Track From Moon Duo!

unnamed-2Whenever a band that just released an album throws another track your way, you take it. Moon Duo, the psychedelic rockers who released Shadow of the Sun earlier this year, have a bonus song from that release to share with you today called “Fadeaway” and it’s packed with even more of that great gritty psych rock that you love from these two. Who knows when we’ll hear from this band again, so take pleasure in the extra track below and if you haven’t already, check out Shadow of the Sun, which is out via Sacred Bones Records.

ATX Spotlight: Institute Unleash New Single

instAustin’s had a pretty solid week single bringing out music.  We had a hit from Orthy, Jesse Jenkins and now we’ve got this Institute track (there was also a new Future Death tune floating about). The music has this propulsive proto-punk, though the latter half of the track has a little bit more of a quirky art-rock approach.  The vocals, by and large, are delivered in a sort of matter-of-fact spoken fashion, which works against the guitar’s created sounds; it’s unsettling, creating a haunting that will surely win over new listeners. Look for Catharsis on June 9th via Sacred Bones Records.

ATX Spotlight: Institute Full Length On Its Way

instLast year’s Salt EP really solidified Institute as a group to be aware of in the broad spectrum of the Internet rock n’ roll buzz-bands, but those in Austin likely had already been paying attention to the group (if not their other projects like Glue or Wiccans, etc). Now, they’ve got the release of their new full-length lined-up, and this first single really has me amped for its release.  You’ll hear a certain nonchalance in the delivery of the vocals, while there’s a sharpness in the gritty recording of the rest of the act. Sounds like the band’s going all over the place on Catharsis, and I hope you all have fun on the ride…going to be a good one. (Sacred Bones 6/9)
