The Berries Deliver Country Rock Tune

Seattle based artist Matt Berry has long been making a name for himself on the West Coast with a variety of musical projects such as Happy Diving and Big Bite. Never satisfied with the status quo, Matt has a new project called The Berries with a debut album coming out soon. The premiere track from this new work is called “Security Blues” which features much more of a slowed down, country inspired sound in sharp contrast to the usual rock n roll vibe from Berry. This song certainly has some rock tendencies to it, but I like the veer towards the Americana genre.

The Berries will release Start All Over Again on October 26th via Help Yourself Records.

Really Love Scarves

It seems like in this day and age, everything is old and new all over again. For the most part, I’m okay with that, giving me a chance to unabashedly shed praise on Scarves. They’ve got a new LP in the works, and I’m freaking in love with it, can’t stop listening to it today. It wavers back and forth between being an homage to classic Weakerthans sound and something you’d find on Jade Tree. While those are some obvious emo nods, and Niko has a distinctive voice, they brandish their lineage with such bravado that you can’t help but be won over by the entirety of what they bring to the table. Tune in, turn it up and don’t forget to grab the Dinner Dates for the End of Days via Good Eye Records on September 28th.

Fun New Track From Say Hi

I have been a terrible human over the last week or so leaving Nathan Wanklord to do all of the posting and I apologize for my absence. If you will have me back on a regular basis, I suggest you check out this new song called “Green With Envy” from Seattle based artist Say Hi. When I say fun, this track is obviously full a lot of joy with it’s bouncing acoustic guitar and upbeat tempo throughout the track. For those of us back to work after a long layoff, it sure is making my work week better.

Say Hi will release Caterpillar Centipede on September 7th via Euphobia Records.

Stuck Jamming This New Wild Powwers Tune

Wild Powwers description of their new single is quite fitting, calling it ‘a tsunami’ one is trying to escape…except just like they exclaim, you can’t escape it; it sweeps you up. The drums have a hard roll, while ominous guitar lines slink in and out of the front of the mix; there’s a haunting howl from below, like a siren’s call. Then they jump into a heavy stomp, bubbling with hints of sinister pop undertones. The group unleashes their pow[w]ers upon us in the song’s closing minutes, reveling in the tsunami’s final destruction. The group will release Skin on October 12th via Nadine Records.

Give A Warm Welcome to Spesh

With my age getting into the higher numbers, it sometimes seems quite difficult to find a new band that excites me as much as Seattle based Spesh. Take this new single “Teflon” as an example of a band’s sheer talent and tell me it doesn’t spark a fire in you in some way. From my first listen, it sounded quite a bit like some of the earlier work from The Cure if the lead vocalist wasn’t so damned depressed all the time. Maybe it’s inspired by bands from the 80s new wave/pop music, or whomever may inspire them, the track will surely delight.

Spesh will release new album Famous Worlds on September 28th via Killroom Records.

Burn Slowly With Dismal Thinkings

As just about anyone knows about me, the slow burning, emo genre has always held a truly special place in my musical heart. With that said, you’ll understand my love of a song like this one called “Gone Away” from Seattle based rock band Dismal Thinkings. It reminds me of some of the best old school stuff from the genre like Mineral or Sunny Day. If you’re compared to bands such as these, RayRay is going to jam it all day.

Dismal Thinkings will release blanketfort on July 20th. Pre-order.

Nicholas Merz Is My Indie Rock Spirit Animal

Admittedly, writing about music consistently for the past 10 years occasionally wears you down; it’s never forgiving, and you run across the same sound more often than you’d like to admit…depending on the current trends. Then you stumble across something like Nicholas Merz, who spent a lot of time writing music in Seattle outfit Darto. Now he’s out there on his own, crafting this brand of literary rock n’ roll that’s far too uncommon; it’s like a spirited version of Leonard Cohen, empowered by the song’s arrangement. This track makes me think of tons of references to other great artists too, be it the National or Patrick Wolf; it just creates this sounding board for my life at the moment. This tune will appear on his album, out June 1st via Aagoo Records.

Flying Fish Cove Deliver Classic Indiepop

Flying Fish Cove is the latest pop export from Seattle, immediately setting the charm levels on high as soon as you press play on their latest EP. The opening tune “Sleight of Hand” kicks in with those jangling chords with furious drumming speed to set the tone behind Dena’s vocals. They settle down for a brief moment on the following tune, but jump right back into the bread-and-butter bouncing indiepop you’ll need to get through the rest of this week. I especially like how “Pony Bracelet” seems to operate in varying segments, all of which could hint at the band’s sound in the future…or maybe not. Check out the whole EP right below or grab it from Jigsaw Records!

Poppy Ditty from Cozy Slippers

Beneath the rain in Seattle is a shimmering pop underbelly, or at least that’s what this new track from Cozy Slippers would have you believe. The band drop this new single today, hanging jangling guitar lines out in the air while the duel vocal threat of Barbara and Sarah supply the required amount of melody. That melodic element almost hints at the realm of dream pop, accented by a seemingly smoky mix in the studio. The trio will release their Postcards EP via the reliable Jigsaw Records on April 20th.

Get Serenaded By Scott Yoder

After many years fronting Seattle based band The Pharmacy, Scott Yoder stepped out on his own last year with surprising debut Looking Back in Blue. Well he’s back at it again this year with an album in the works entitled A Fool Aloof coming later this year on Burger Records (pre-order here). To preview the new material, Scott sent over his latest single “Ways of Love”. I love the throwback style of the song as Yoder croons to us over a psych themed background. I’ve already hit repeat on this one about 5 times today…

Greenway Records is releasing a 7″ vinyl version of the song available on September 28th. Pre-order that one too while your at it.
