Porridge Radio Release A Hole in the Ground Single

Something about Porridge Radio just reeks of emotion, making their work some of the most moving from the indie rock scene at the moment. When this song jumps right into the fray, it was the lonesome string work behind, bellowing behind Dana’s voice, adding to the delicate nature wherein everything feels like it could crumble before your ears. In a sense, it reminds me of early Wolf Parade, when everything felt dramatic and in the way choruses would crush you, though there’s more sincerity here, perhaps as you feel the emotion seeping out of Margolin before you. Clouds in the Sky They Will Always Be There For Me drops on October 18th via Secretly Canadian.

Porridge Radio Return with Sick of the Blues

Porridge Radio is one of those bands I really enjoy, but admittedly take for granted. They seem to slip in between the cracks of the 100+ emails I get daily, though I love this new march they’ve just dropped. Secretly Canadian just announced they’ll be releasing Clouds In the Sky They Will Always Be There for Me today, with this steady stomp opening the album’s cycle. The refrain “I’m sick of the blues” is the sort of meditative statement that keeps returning throughout the lyrics, detailing a new self-confidence. Everything musically seems to be lifting the song like some indie rock cheer pyramid, eventually erupting when the song hits near the end, embracing a full-throttle rock n’ roll burst that takes the song to new heights. The new LP drops on October 18th.

gglum Shares Easy Fun Single

Admittedly, the first 45 seconds or so, I was drawn to the beat and mystery of this new gglum single, but it didn’t quite catch. But, just as the 1 minute mark drops, the vocals hit a bit harder and more texture gets layered into that groovy percussive beat. It slides back into the more subtle bounce, which after hearing where the tune will go, had more of a playfulness to it; I had myself doing a little shoulder shimmy in my desk chair as I bounced along. The tune’s playing with great beats and dreamy atmospherics, sort of constantly keeping you in a state of emotional flux. Looking forward to seeing where thye go from here; this single brought to you by Secret Canadiens.

Stella Donnelly Drops Flood Video

Stella Donnelly‘s new album is really high upon my list of what’s coming out in the second half of this year. There’s something special about her delivery, mixed between spoken word, though this latest single sees her really expanding her melodic moments into this brilliantly cool breeze. There’s a playfulness too, be it in the video or the general vibe, which is always interesting, as Donnelly definitely plays with dark subject matter; she does that here, with the song written in response to “a flood of drama” and working your way out of that. Flood will be out on August 26th via Secretly Canadian.

Stella Donnelly Shares Lungs + Announces New Record

In my opinion, Stella Donnelly is an absolute powerhouse, and I’m hoping with the announcement of Flood that she really starts to get the deserved attention here in the States. On her last record, it felt like sort of a more traditional singer-songwriter affair, though the songs were buoyed with great arrangements, not to mention Stella’s playfulness. But, earlier this year, Stella featured on Methyl Ethel‘s “Proof” single, which was an absolute banger. Perhaps we should have taken note, as this new single seems a little more intent on a similar production, using driving beats and natural hooks to set up the core of the song. Her wordplay is still clever as ever, so it doesn’t sound like you’re losing anything; you just get to see a great songwriter blossoming further into the every day name we fully expected her to be. Her new LP, Flood, will be out in August via Secretly Canadian.

Porridge Radio Share End of Last Year Video

Porridge Radio is crafting something quite special for their new album, Waterslide, Diving Board, Ladder to the Sky, especially if we’re going with this new video from the group. Dana Margolin’s voice sounds calm and sincere within the confines of the verses, even as the lyrical content seems to be apologetic to a certain degree with lines like “you break everything you touch.” There’s a rolling moment where a bit of the harsher tones from Margolin creep in as they exclaim “I don’t wanna go back;” it’s just a faint little bit of grit, allowing the song to unfurl into the video created by Maura Sappilo‘s artwork. This new record will be out May 20th via Secretly Canadian. They’ve also got a huge US tour in the Fall, with an Austin date at the Parish.

Even More Stella Donnelly

I’ve pretty much been riding high on the Stella Donnelly train since her performances at last year’s SXSW festival. Luckily, her Beware the Dogs LP isn’t too far off in the distance, so why not celebrate with another gem. This number has a little bit more spirit in the way the guitars cut across the tune; her voice still sparkles, no matter whether she’s delivering lines or drawing out the chorus. I think ultimately, her delivery of everything’s quite smart; she seems to have this sly wit and playfulness that draws in listeners and begs them to be better humans…it’s a theme throughout the LP, in my opinion. Secretly Canadian will release the album on March 8th.

Stella Donnelly Announces Debut

If there’s one thing last year’s SXSW showed us it was that Stella Donnelly has a bright career in front of her. She could hold a room on her own with her presence, but more important was her biting wit. She’s not afraid to call people out in song, but she doesn’t do it in a fashion one would find laborious. In her first single from her debut, she’s calling out men and their inappropriate behavior; I appreciate how she approaches her views through a certain pop sensibility, stuck in your head all day and forcing you to listen to what she has to say. Beware of the Dogs will be out on March 8th via Secretly Canadian.

Cherry Glazerr Shares Daddi

In the first 20 seconds of this brand new Cherry Glazerr tune, you quickly realize that Clementine and her posse are changing things up a bit…but really just a bit. You get 45 seconds of almost playful vocals and electronic beats; it seems to work with the nervous questioning of the lyrics at this point. But, then Creevy lets loose on the guitar, emphatically taking back control of everything; it could be a nameless narrator or it could be Creevy herself, but whoever comes out in the chorus is doing things on their own terms. I thought I loved the early stuff, but this is a really great song, balanced between hooks and the bravado that the band always bring to the live setting. This track will appear on the group’s new LP, Stuffed & Ready, which drops on Secretly Canadian on February 1st.

Utterly Serene Track From Damien Jurado

If a moment of chill is what you’re after today, then you’ve come to the right place. “Allocate” from Damien Jurado is the five minutes of the day where you just turn the volume up and tune it all out. First and foremost, the vocals are absolutely lovely–Jurado’s voice hits you like a cool breeze, but with the rich texture of the likes of M. Ward. They shine as the brightest aspect of the track as they spin a tale, but they’re richly held together by the slow moving instrumentation. You also get this undercurrent of strings, which adds a welcome layer of nostalgia and wistfulness to the number. This track is taken from Damien Jurado’s upcoming album,The Horizon Just Laughed, which will be out May 4.
