Little Cinema Hits the Diving Board

tdubsLong ago there was a great little Austin band named Hollywood Gossip.  For all intents and purposes, they were my favorite local pop band…then they were gone.  Frontman Tyler Womack has relocated to Brooklyn, but he’s still got a knack for writing hook-laden songs…he even still is pushing the path through Austin; Marcus of Shivery Shakes and Dana Falconberry appear on his new single. This first song really reminds me why I fell in love with Womack’s work long ago; he’s got a rather distinctive voice, kept in check by Falconberry here.  It’s nice to see Tyler back as Little Cinema.

Show Pics: Locals Only @ Mohawk (7/26)

Black Books…with a brief visit to Cheer Up.

So we talk quite bit about supporting the locals. We also suggested making supporting the locals easier with folding in the artists in smart ways. Our friends at The Mohawk had a great idea; why not fill a night off with an inside/outside show for a cheap cover to help you see a ton of local talent? Make it so.

Perfect excuse to have fun with the nifty fifty and spend a night milling about The Mohawk and saying hi to friends with a soundtrack provided by Little Radar, Wiretree, Young Tongue, Supermoon, Black Books, Modern Medicine and a quick trip next door to catch up with Shivery Shakes at Cheer Up.

On the Road: Shivery Shakes Tour Diary (Part 3 & 4)

Campfire_Chapel HillWe’re continuing our series with our friends in Shivery Shakes, wrapping up their stories from the road.  Since the end of their tour hit the weekend, we held on to both of their later entries to combine them into two.  We’ve got words from William, and Andrew, so check out how the road has treated these lads.  They’re back in town now, so hopefully we’ll have a nice little wrap-up of their experiences, but for now, check their latest entries.   Read more

On the Road: Tour Diary with Shivery Shakes (Part 1)

Shake-BannerThe blog world can get a bit stale from time to time.  Listen to this song. Go to this show.  So, I wanted to do something a little bit different, but something that still reflects the music.  I got in touch with our friends Shivery Shakes, who were just setting out on their first big tour as a band, going from Austin to NYC and back. I asked them to do a little tour diary, give some insight into a young band on the road.  We’ll be checking in with them throughout the tour for a little tour diary action. Plus, they’re traveling with our good friend, and excellent photographer (though no Brian Gray!), Pooneh Ghana. You can check out more of her work HERE.  Without further ado, here’s a look into  life on the road.  Read more

The temperature in town is heating up, and that means summer time rock shows are on their way.  We’ve got a great show for you to hit up tonight, featuring the much-talked about NYC band, Skaters.  They blow into town with a fresh bit of pop rock, supporting the release of their brand new album, Manhattan.  But, as if an adored band wasn’t enough, the bill will feature local heavy-hitters, Shivery Shakes and Grape St.  Both acts are growing forces in the local scene, and both are in the final stages of finishing new albums…we’ll share more on that later.

The 2014 Austin Music Blogger Awards

AMBA 2014 Photo BannerIt was a great event. We were proud to be a part of it.

I have a list of winners and so many photos. Orthy sounded great, buoyed by Ian and Jeramy’s win for best DJs as Learning Secrets. Shivery Shakes ripped after their win for “Sidewalk Talk”. Jess was charming and haunting as ever, congrats. A Giant Dog stole the show with their set, while Mirror Travel may have given some voters buyer’s remorse. Magna Carda is hip-hop in Austin; go see them.

Show Pics: Young Girls EP @ Lambert’s (2/20)

EPPretty straight forward night of jams to celebrate the launch of the Young Girls EP. We got a little silly, we listened to some music, we watched the Rockets lose. Nathan was happy about that, Pete was not.

As the big bonus, we got to hang out with ATH old friends like Shivery Shakes and more recent friends like Reservations. I’ll just let everyone know now that it was a dream local lineup for Team ATH and we were there to the bitter end shimmying despite duties as assigned in the morning.

Check out the pics for proof after the break.
