Another Tune from Maff

Chile’s Maff have already given us one spectacular single, and they’re back with a new tune…this time in English. Once you listen, you’ll clearly hear the distinctive sound of shoegaze, though I’m particularly fond of the presentation here. The verses are soft, predominantly percussion and reverb vocals. It’s the space in between verses where the pedals jump in with walls of distorted guitars cascading down through your speakers. Perhaps the strength of the group is the restraint, as they craft their noise around a central melody, never jumping too far into the noisiness that accompanies the work of many a peer. The band will release their Melanina EP, and let’s hope that sets the tone for a future LP, as I can’t get enough of this.

Spirit of Shoegaze Alive with Maff

From the instant this new Maff song jumps through your speakers, the guitars and percussion crash upon you, wave after wave of noise…beautifully crafted, of course. Then, the group pull back, allowing the Spanish lyrics to take center-stage, which makes sense seeing as the group calls Chile home. For me, the draw is in the unique details that flourish throughout, such as the way the guitars ring, then abruptly stop around the 1:20 mark, culminating in a dizzying nosedive of guitar noise. The band will release their Melanina EP on April 2nd, and I’m crossing my fingers that it’s filled with tracks as beautiful as this.

We’re really really excited to kick of the label side of ATH with our first release of 2018: Blushing‘s Weak EP. It’s a heavy dose of dreamgaze gems, all organized into a handy 12″ record. Several tracks have already garnered raves from the likes of DKFM Radio to the esteemed Gold Flake Paint, so clearly they’ve got something you need. Plus, if you’re in the Austin area, you can catch the band live at their release show at Cheer Up Charlies on Saturday night. It’s a pretty solid bill, with Ringo Deathstarr and Single Lash among bands filling the evening out. Hear Another New Blushing Track

Feel like we had a banner year for ATH Records last year, but 2018 seems really big (in my mind anyways). I couldn’t think of a better way to start off the new year than with the release of Blushing‘s Weak EP. The band just dropped another of the tracks from the album today, and it’s every bit as enjoyable as the entire EP. Shouldn’t have to go on and on about how much I really enjoy it, so I’ll just leave you with the tune below. You can grab the vinyl version HERE, or pick it up on sweet cassettes over HERE. NO! The video is not weak, it’s the title track of the band’s brand new Weak EP, being released by yours truly in January of next year! This week New Noise were super kind, and dropped the video for the track. I wanted to circle back a few days later, make sure we got in front of you as well before you head off into the weekend. Don’t need to say much more than we’re really excited for 2018, and couldn’t think of a better way to kick it off than with Blushing‘s new EP. If you’ve been following us over at ATH Records, you’re surely aware of how excited we are for 2018! We’ve got some great releases, but the first will be a 12″ EP for Blushing; they’ve titled the EP Weak. Yesterday DKFM premiered the title track on their shogegaze radio show, and I wanted to make sure you had an ample chance to hear it too, just in case you missed it accidentally. For those just being introduced to the band, you’re in for a treat, as they perfectly mesh the qualities of dream pop and shoegaze’s angular guitars; you’re really going to love it. We’ll be releasing it on January 26th, but you can grab it HEREfrom us right now.

Another Fresh Airiel Tune

Just a week ago we dropped a remarkable return from Airiel, and today there’s another tune that popped up over at FTR. True to form, the song’s filled with cascading guitars lines that create an enormous wall of beautiful atmospherics. Vocals are hidden in the back, and on this tune, they almost serve as a textural element for the rest of the band to work around…ebbs and flows and what nots. Fans are really going to clamor for this, so if you’re new to the band, you might want to rush over to Shelflife and get your hands on Molten Young Lovers before the October 13th release date.

Brand New Track from Airiel

Airiel. This is how I like my shoegaze. In fact, it’s not quite shoegaze, though it definitely has one foot in the genre. Instead, they bring in these soft harmonic vocals, touched up by cascading guitar notes ringing in the distance. They fill the song’s typical chorus area with that barrage of squalling noise that’s identified the genre for ages. Honestly, tons of acts have tried to go this route, splitting time between pop sensibility and noise, but I’ve not quite heard someone do quite as beautifully convincing as Airiel. Look for the group’s brand new LP, Molten Young Lovers, dropping via Shelflife on October 13th.

Brand New Dead Leaf Echo

So much great news this week, musically speaking. News just dropped this week that Dead Leaf Echo will be releasing a brand new LP, Beyond.Desire. Upon pressing play, the walls of atmospherics and distorted guitars begin to surround your brain, just as the vocals seemingly roll along with the drum beat…more spoken then sung. As is the band’s specialty, they lunge into a heavy moment of shoegaze exploration as the vocals claim “I built this temple for you.” It’s just what you expect, and I expect it to be damn good; it drops on October 13th via PaperCup Music.

Shoegaze Vibes from Colour of Spring

I’m always going to fall in love with a song that has a sparkling shimmer on the back of a chord as it washes over the front of the mix, and this tune from Colour of Spring is no exception. While the song always seems on the verge of exploding, the band manage to hold that back until the back end of the tune, allowing for an increased bit of tension that draws listeners into the song. I appreciate that they never turn their back from the innate pop qualities that lurk within, and with that attitude, I have high hopes for their self-titled EP on June 23rd via House of Love.
