Show Preview: Big Bill + Criminal Hygiene @ Mohawk (7/6)

showposterWe know you’re all looking forward to the 4th of July and whatnot, but we want to give you plenty of time to plan your Sunday evening.  We’re sponsoring a great little rock n’ roll show with a bunch of our friends, both in and out of town; it takes place at the Mohawk at 9 PM.  Big Bill, one of our local favorites, is headlining the gig, and it’ll be one of your last chances to catch them before they embark on their big US tour.  Also, rocking the night will be our favorites, Criminal Hygiene, who are coming all the way from LA to grace us with their presence; they’ll even be tending bar before the show at 6, so be sure to come hang out with the band.  But, you better get there early to see Pharaohs, who’ve been banging out power-pop ditties for some time in our fair city, always winning us over.  It’s sure to be a great night, so join us, please.

Show Preview: Dub Thompson + Ought @ Holy Mountain (7/3)

dubIn a bone-headed move that I accept full responsibility for, I completely slept on the Dub Thompson album, 9 Songs. I’ve since had it on a steady rotation after it’s release; there’s elements of noise, psychedelic hints and just weirdo pop, so of course I’m obsessing.  The band brings their show into town this Thursday night, and you’ve all got July 4th off, so you’ve got no excuse to stay out late and enjoy the music over at Holy Mountain.  Also, you’ll get to see Montreal’s Ought, who received the arbitrary “Best New Music” tag from P4k, if that matters to you.  Their angular post-rock seems like it’s built for a pulsating live show of rhythm and grooves.  You can buy yourself $10 tickets HERE.  Hope to see you guys out so we can celebrate freedom together at midnight.

Show Preview: Pity Sex and Solids @ Holy Mountain (Tonight)

holyRarely do you get to start off your week with such a bad ass show, but I’m really excited for tonight’s gig over at Holy Mountain.  You’ve got a couple of solid openers in Costumes and Gang Sign, but there’s also one of the most overlooked bands of the year jamming strong, Solids.  Their album Blame Confusion is this boisterous bombast, and I highly encourage you to get out now and get yourself a copy of it. Then the night gets closed out by Michigan’s Pity Sex, who offer up a shoe gaze-y version of rock n’ roll; they’ve got the ability to go loud, or pull back with a little bit more melody. This is the perfect way to kick-start your week, and lose a little hearing.

AMENDMENT: Pity Sex have had to cancel their slot due to traveling issues. So now Solids will headline!

ATH & Side One Track One Presents @ Holy Mountain (6.20)

10321675_10100906098219088_7853577584341865387_oWe’ve been talking about this for weeks, and we’re just a day away from what we consider to be one of the best bills in town Friday night, if not THE best bill in town.  All four acts have released great albums or EPs this year, which alone warrants your attendance.  Doors are at 9, and at 9:30, you’ll get to hear She Sir.  Their album Go Guitars needs to be in your collection, especially if you consider yourself a fan of dreamy indiepop. Next up are Young Girls, who we helped release their Young Girls EP; it’s infectious surf pop with a dose of bad ass.  Following them will be Ramesh; we’ll be releasing his debut album on vinyl shortly, so come sample everything great he’s got in store.  And the night closes with Abram Shook, long considered one of the best songwriters in town.  If you don’t have his album Sun Marquee, you’ll want to grab it at the show! So come one, come all, and get there early to have the night of your life, with us, your friends at ATH and Side One Track One.

Show Preview: Curtin @ Lamberts (5/23)

1618257_628191577260497_705601427_oThere’s tons of events going on in town this weekend, but we wanted to point you in the direction of this secret little gem that might not have gotten your attention otherwise. Curtin is a two-piece who craft this sparse folk-influenced rock; some of their songs lean more in the direction of experimenting within the genre, while other tracks offer up more traditional fare. The group is touring to promote their album, One for the Doghearted. But, just because you can’t have a show without great locals, be sure to get there early, as the line-up includes two of our favorite friends, The Midgetmen and Ram (formerly of Whitman).  Sample the tune below to get a feel of what to expect.

Show Preview: The Rich Hands Album Release @ Hotel Vegas (

richhands

Date Saturday. May 24th
Location Hotel Vegas
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $5

One of our favorite acts of the last few months, and really for the last several has been San Antonio’s The Rich Hands.  We caught up with them before they came to kick it in Austin for SXSW, and we’ve covering their singles leading up to the release of Out of My Head.  Good news! Not only is the album out, but they’ll also be celebrating its release this Saturday night at Hotel Vegas.  They’ll be joined by ATH faves, Grape St, as well as other acts we support like Lochness Mobsters, Rolland Hazzard, Mitch Frazier and His Radiation.  The show’s cheap, and the music’s great. Be sure to buy the album from the band…gas to San Antonio is expensive!

Show Preview: A. Sinclair @ Mohawk (TONIGHT!!)

asinclairOut of the ashes of two great bands, come two new great bands.  And perhaps it wasn’t even ashes, but a change in direction, which has brought us A. Sinclair (frmly Frank Smith) and Otis the Destoryer (frmly the Couch).  Both bands will be releasing EPs tonight over at the Mohawk, which is a definite reason to show your face.  A. Sinclair are offering up their Pretty Girls EP, and Otis the Destroyer are offering us the Dark Arts EP.  We consider both bands to be two of the top acts in town, though admittedly that list is growing and growing.  Plus, because you have to have great openers, the bands have chosen Chasca and the Docs to open the night up.  You should definitely stop by this evening…there isn’t a better option out there.   The show starts at 10 inside, right after the Red Fang show.

Austin Spotlight: Harvest Thieves Ready 7″

harvestthievesIf you’ve been keeping track of the Americana music scene in Austin the last few years you’ve surely heard of Harvest Thieves.  If you haven’t, then now’s your chance to join us as we prepare for the release of the band’s upcoming split 7″ with Sam Cassidy.  On the local act’s side, you get this sensible piece of rock n’ roll wearing hints of country heritage on the sleeve; there’s a nice bit of piano working in the background too, helping fill out the sound.  If, like us, you’re enjoying what you hear, then you should check out the group’s release show on June 5th over at Holy Mountain.  They’ll be joined by other great local acts such as A. Sinclair and Lowin.

The temperature in town is heating up, and that means summer time rock shows are on their way.  We’ve got a great show for you to hit up tonight, featuring the much-talked about NYC band, Skaters.  They blow into town with a fresh bit of pop rock, supporting the release of their brand new album, Manhattan.  But, as if an adored band wasn’t enough, the bill will feature local heavy-hitters, Shivery Shakes and Grape St.  Both acts are growing forces in the local scene, and both are in the final stages of finishing new albums…we’ll share more on that later.
