SXSW Tuesday In Photos

While Nathan was jet setting around on Monday, Tuesday was my first full day into the SXSW madness. Both of us started early with a focus solely on unofficial and sort of off the beaten path shows for the day. I stuck around the campus area at Tweedy’s and Hole in the Wall while Nathan headed over to the east side. We’ll be giving you a full recap of band highlights and photos later this week and on into next, but I thought ya’ll might want to see what it’s like out there, especially as weather and other factors may come into play as the week carries on. Hit the jump for some quick thoughts on Tuesday with photos.

SXSW Interview: Elephant Stone

Amidst the talks of a possible SXSW festival cancellation, the ATH team is planning to go full steam ahead as if this thing is still going down. Even if something were to happen, it’s still fun to create SXSW playlists and talk to bands on the festival list. Today I have the pleasure of sharing with you interview responses from Montreal based outfit Elephant Stone. They have a slew of shows lined up in a couple of weeks and I’m sure they’d appreciate your presence at one or all of them. Hit the jump for more.

ATX Friday Night Show Spotlight

Austin-skyline-_9359-copyI always encourage you to go hit up the town on the weekends.  I know we’re all busy, but you can grab a fancy dinner, some drinks, and still have time to enjoy some of the great music this town has to offer.  There’s tons going on this weekend, so I’m going to spend a little time today looking at Friday night, that way you have time to plan your evening.  I even added some overly basic genres behind the shows to give you an idea at what you could be in for.  Read more

ATX Show Spotlight: Pick a Show, Any Show

Austin-skyline-_9359-copyThursday’s pretty packed with local gigs to get you out of your doldrums and partake in some music.  As it stands, I see three rad shows you could attend…so why waste time.

Hotel Vegas has our favorites Grape St, slanging catchy garage rock, joined by their friends Booher and Idle de’Classe as the opening acts. This show is built for rock n’ roll fans.

Cheer Up Charlies has the Taft album release. There’s some heavy-hitters opening, with Sweet Spirit, Lomelda and Isaiah the Mosaic opening the night’s festivities.  If you go, pick up Taft’s new album.

Holy Mountain has a show hosted by our archenemies and friends from Side One Track One. John always puts together a good line-up (which is why I hate him); he’s got Ton Tons, Wild Moccasins and Tele Novella, so you get your creative pop mix here.

Sample some songs from Grape St, Taft and Tele Novella.

Austin Weekend Show Suggestions

AustinMusiFlowsaThis weekend, above most normal weekends, is a pretty good reason to go out.  There’s a benefit being put on by sxswcares, raising money for victims of the SXSW tragedy.  A lot of these venues are saving up for donations, are hosting events, as well as directing folks to various on-line auctions to raise money, so be sure to help support the worty cause; remind people what a great community we are. So, with that in mind, here are my suggestions for great shows to hit up this weekend. Read more
