More Music from The Fireworks

fireworksI’m astonished that the Fireworks haven’t caught hold in the United States yet; they’re perhaps one of the best female-fronted guitar pop bands. Perhaps that’s because they include a bit of jangle, a bit of shoegaze and a DIY aesthetic. Wait. Those things are all really cool, and the Brighton group continue to prove they’re a force in the studio, even if you haven’t gotten a chance to listen to the band yet. You should start by going back and listening to Switch Me On, then you can bounce around some other recordings, all whilst getting prepped for their Black and Blue EP; it’s going to be released on a limited 10″ via Shelife Recordson July 15th.

Pleased to Meet You: The Lymbs Ready EP

lymbsSo many tracks come across my track on a daily basis, and while I claim to fawn over so many, I’ll admit that the favorite I’ve found this week is this brand new song from The Lymbs (now based in Oakland). It has this crunchy style of rock to it, stuttering at moments, before lurching forward into a full-fledged rocker. Since relocating from New Mexico, the band have been hard at work trying to get things up and running, so expect a full EP or album to come from the band in just a short span of time!

Track Premiere: Picnic Lightning Prep Debut

picnicNeed some rock n’ roll in your life? Seems like you should get involved with Texas’ act, Picnic Lightning today, just to hedge your bets. It’s interesting in listening to their first single from their debut album; you can hear traces of influences such as Thermals or Segall, but hinting at pop sensibility like Nada Surf or Death Cab. None of those things are bad, and in fact, if you can pull it off, there’s likely some success in finding the perfect intersection where those sounds are bound together, which I think is why I’ve enjoyed jamming to this song so much today. Their self-titled album will be released on September 2nd via Dreamy Life Records, so for now, just let your ears buzz with joy.

Listen to New Sat Duets Tune

satnightBetter start off today right, and seems like that’s probably best done if you get into this new track from Sat. Night Duets. Seems part casualindie rock, in the vein of Silver Jews, but part classic country-infused rock seeping through the pores. There’s just something in the vocal tones that grabs me; it’s a pretty deep tone, but sung with such calm that I find myself enchanted. The Milwaukee group are set to release their brand new record, Air Guitar, on September 16th via Father Daughter Records.

A Little Folksy Pop From Heroes of Toolik

Heroes of Toolik 2013Heroes of Toolik, an NYC based super group, are on the verge of releasing their second full length LP in August. In anticipation of that release, they’ve put out a single that shows off their avant-garde folk pop style. “Perfect,” which you can listen to below, is a nice blend of avant garde folk pop which orchestral influences. The vocals are a bit unconventional, almost like a bit of poetry in the verses, but then they remind me a bit of Belle & Sebastian in the harmonious choruses. And it’s impossible to ignore that nice string presence in the mix that adds an extra layer to the song. Take a listen and then get ready for Like Night, which will be out in August.

Love This New June Gloom Tune

junegloomNot sure I can stop playing this new track from June Gloom today. Those who grew up in the late 90s/early 00s will surely find some nostalgic feeling in his songwriting…pulling on touches of acts like Pinback or Built to Spill, though things are spun in a magical way that makes the tune ever present in today’s landscape. There’s something overwhelmingly warming about the track, so I hope you play it as much as I have this morning. Look for his debut, Fake Problems, which comes out via Funeral Sound Records on July 15th.

Brand New Tunes from The Crystal Furs

crystalfursNot too long ago we were introduced to the indiepoppers, The Crystal Furs, hailing from a few miles North of us in Ft. Worth. Well, they just upped two brand new tracks that I think you’re going to love…at least I do. I love “Miss Hughes” in particular, blending aspects of Camera Obscura whilst putting on a janglier touch with the guitars. It’s a wonderful way for you to start off you Monday morning. Can’t wait to see these guys finally come to Austin. Happy Monday folks.

Brand New EP from The Wind-Up Birds

windupbirdsLong ago I wrote about the Wind-Up Birds, and I’ve kept an eye out for new tunes from the group, and that day has finally come…they just released The Right, a new EP featuring 5 new tracks. I love that their sound goes back a few years to some of the heavy-hitting post-punk that was blasting out of Britain in the 00s, like Art Brut. There’s the same sort of spoken-word vocal delivery with distorted energy blasting through the rest of your speakers. It’s filled with energy and just the right amount of noise to keep it cool. Stream it below.

Slow Burner from Fire to the Stars

fireIn yet other Australian news, Fire to the Stars have just signed up with Seahorse Records to release their eponymous debut. This track is a brooding number, slowly building the song’s structure via the voice. It’s interesting, as the song begins with the purity of that vocal, pushing ahead slowly, building the wall of sound behind. Eventually, the noise breaks through, but I like that it’s restrained; it’s not too distorted or atmospheric, but almost pretty, if that makes sense. You’ll have to take a listen on your own in order to get into it, then look for the album for your own personal collection.

Pleased to Meet You: Garden Gate

gardengateJust a little bit ago, we introduced you to Golden Brown, one of the newer labels out in the world, and today, they return the favor by introducing my to Garden Gate. In listening to this first single from the band’s upcoming record, Dark Harvest, you can immediately feel the psychedelic influences…frankly it’s on the cover art as well. But, upon repeated listens, the interesting thing I found is how similar the group might be to fans of Air…synth work and pop sensation galore. It’s definitely a newer twist on the genre, and a sweet find for me. Look for the album on August 5th.
