Show Preview: Mothers @ Stubbs (Tonight)

mothersThere’s a bit going on tonight, but one band that should be on your radar is Mothers. The Athens band has been making quite a name for themselves over the last year, culminating with the release of their excellent debut, When You Walk a Long Distance You Are Tired. I caught the group during SXSW, and they delivered a powerful performance; it’s one that might even surprise you if you’ve spent a great deal of time with their record (as you should have!). They’ll also be joined by Sego on the evening, so you get two great acts for a reasonable price. Doors are at 8, with tickets still available HERE.

Show Review: Mac Demarco @ Stubbs (10.20)

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetExpectations were quite high for Tuesday night at Stubbs. Riding high off the release of Another One, Mac Demarco and company came to a sold out venue to share the new tunes as well as jam out some of the old. Playing to quite the young crowd, though one who has probably seen the band in some capacity—over the past year, Mac has played not only one, but two of Austin’s festivals. For those who have seen Demarco’s live act, the night was quite predictable, but nevertheless enjoyable. Read on for my full recap.

Show Preview: Natalie Prass + Promised Land Sound @ Stubbs (Tonight)

natalieThere’s tons of happenings this week, but I feel like this one deserves more publicity than it’s getting at the moment. Surely that has to do with the fact that it’s the show following the huge crowd expected for Mac Demarco outdoors. Still, you’re going to want to check out Natalie Prass; she’s worked with a lot of incredible musicians and her soulful voice is worth the price of entry alone…just listen to the track at the bottom. But, to top off the evening, she’ll be joined by Promised Land Sound, who we’ve covered pretty extensively building up to their recent release, For Use and Delight. It’s a night full of really great voices…I think you’ll be best served by being on hand. Tickets are $14 and doors open at 9:30 PM .

Show Preview: Mac Demarco @ Stubbs (10.20)

105346_lgYou heard right, King Mac Demarco is coming to town this Tuesday night and you’ll be a fool to miss him. Now Mac and company are a special group, bringing you not only their jangly off kilter stoner pop, but adding that extra element of shenanigans in the live setting. These antics never fail to bring a smile to my face, nor do they take away at all from the tunes that the band plays. They’re supporting Mac’s newest release, Another One, and they’ve got Alex Calder as well as Demarco’s other band, Walter TV, to open up the night with their guitar driven and weird pop tunes respectively. While advance GA tickets are sold out, there still seems to be some VIP tickets up for grabs over here at the Stubbs website.  Check out a few tracks from the bands below and get scrambling to find yourself some tickets if you don’t already have some; it’s gonna be a night to remember.

Show Pics: Braids @ Stubb’s (5/23)

Braids didn’t know they were headlining a show at Stubb’s last Saturday. Fans of Purity Ring sat through buckets of rain to get up front for their fave, hoping to be rewarded for their steadfast weather-proofing to dance a bit. Braids, though, was my primary objective having seen Purity a Ring a few times in the past. We all know how bad the storms got late Saturday, and then on Sunday and Monday; Stubb’s made the right call to get people out of the venue when they did. I know Purity Ring fans were disappointed, but Braids did their best to entertain and the crowd was super happy to be seeing any show at all after all the weather they endured to get inside.

I Saw Young Buffalo & Matt Pond PA @ Stubbs

Upload Pond Buffalo 03On Sunday I started my week off on a positive note by heading down to see one of my long time favorite bands Matt Pond PA.  Making the evening even better was an opening set by a more recent favorite of mine Young Buffalo.  Though both bands could feel the sleepiness of the crowd due to possible long weekends, everyone seemed to have quite the good time.  Follow the jump for some thoughts and recent music from both bands.
