Show Review: The War on Drugs @ Stubb’s 9/28

photo 4 Last night at Stubb’s was a night for a little hillbilly-esque rock and roll, as Philidelphia’s The War on Drugs made their way to Austin once again to play the hits off their stunning release, Lost In The Dream, which came out to great praise earlier this year. A fair number of folks eventually turned up for this Sunday night show, albeit, mostly after the opening band, Califone, were halfway through their set. Read more about how the night unfolded after the jump.

Show Review: Conor Oberst @ Stubbs (9/20)

IMG_2947-2Conor Oberst takes a moment to stop in and say hello to his Austin fans and the reception and crowd participation (though, maybe not encouraged) screamed at me something I’ve been denying from my first intimate moments with his music in a dark bedroom on a lonely, suburban street; Conor Oberst is a household name. No, he is not on the front cover of EW from time to time promoting himself.  Yes, he still thinks of himself as an independent musician, pumping his heart through his quill with only the purely artistic need to express himself and his feelings.  Maybe, though, after so much time, twenty-one years, of painting musical landscapes in which his poetry can frolic, we have all chosen him as a member of our family.  Follow the jump for more.

Austin Weekend Show Spotlight

Austin, I love you.As the weather unfortunately heats up, that means there’s also a music scene heating up.  There’s tons of shows this weekend in particular, both local and traveling.  I won’t bore you with details, but remind you to show up early to catch openers, especially the local ones like Sweet Talk playing at Mohawk tonight. Here you go: Read more

Show Review: Cut Copy @ Stubb’s (6/21)

Cut CopySometimes you have to pay the toll. The heat was taking the toll. Stubb’s is probably just a little too small to host Cut Copy these days. The band is stuck in popularity in the gap that Austin can’t quite handle and I doubt Cedar Park Center would be a popular destination for an indie-pop electro Aussie dance party.

Damn. It was hot. We sweat, we dance, we sweat more. We wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Click through for a couple more thoughts and plenty of pics.

Location Stubbs
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $10 from Frontgate

The temperature in town is heating up, and that means summer time rock shows are on their way.  We’ve got a great show for you to hit up tonight, featuring the much-talked about NYC band, Skaters.  They blow into town with a fresh bit of pop rock, supporting the release of their brand new album, Manhattan.  But, as if an adored band wasn’t enough, the bill will feature local heavy-hitters, Shivery Shakes and Grape St.  Both acts are growing forces in the local scene, and both are in the final stages of finishing new albums…we’ll share more on that later.

Built to Spill @ Stubbs (11/23)

Date 11/23/13
Location Stubbs
Doors 7pm
Tickets $20 @ Frontgate

I was having a conversation the other day with a friend about how Built to Spill are one of the few bands that has managed to survive the crowded 90s indie scene and continually churn out solid releases.  Sure maybe the newer releases have never quite grabbed the moments from the earlier days, but the band has a multitude of solid tunes and can always bring it in the live setting.  With that said, why not head on out to Stubbs on Saturday night for a show by the veteran indie rockers.  Of course let’s not forget the opening support provided by both Slam Dunk and Genders.

Show Pics: Metric @ Stubb’s (5/1)

Metric is a band that is very fun to shoot. Emily is charismatic and energetic, the rest of the band implements proper use of guitar, drum and bass face. Add to that a killer lighting rig and some beauty pop jams, you have the recipe for a fun night out. Heading to Stubb’s on a Wednesday, there are worse ways to spend a weeknight.

I’ll sum things up, offer advice to the openers, The Colourist, and share the pretty pics after the break.
