SXSW has officially begun down here in Austin, though the music doesn’t kick off until next week, so you’ve got a bit of time to go through all our interviews to find some cool artists. One of those, Fanclubwallet, just dropped her recent single “Gr8 Timing,” with an album on the way; she mentions that below. She’s got three shows scheduled for the week that I know of, so be sure to jam to the tune below, and read all about the project.
Me Rex has been on everyone’s radar, continuously knocking out pop rock hit after hit…and today they add another to that list. In fact, they’re one of the main acts I’ll be looking to catch as many times as I can at SXSW next week. This new song has a huge feel, hitting quick with the vocals, looking at a more hopeful future, a little bit of joy “when the sun comes back out.” Their songs are infectious and punchy, which is just how I take my rock n’ roll in the mornings. This new tune comes with the announcement of their Plesiosaur EP, out in June via Big Scary Monsters.
You know we love the Drums, so why not start off today’s interviews catching up with Johnny Aries, who will be releasing a solo record later this year via Park the Van. It’s short and sweet, just the right teaser to hopefully get you thinking that Johnny should be on your list of acts to catch while you’re in town…if you’re in town. Also, since its early, hats off to Beck. IYKYK.
Continuing our push with SXSW interviews, and we’ve got one I’m stoked on as JayWood just recently signed up to work with one of my favorite labels, Captured Tracks. I was unaware of their work, so getting to know Jeremy through this interview has been a great introduction for me…hopefully it will be the same for you.
When browsing through the SXSW list, I always go after the foreign bands coming overseas, as they don’t always get a chance to return. Checking that list, that’s how I was reintroduced to Germany’s Roller Derby, offering this buoyant dream pop, pulsing from beneath the song’s surface. Phline Meyer’s vocals have this sort of sparkling indifference, or perhaps that calmed cool that makes you want to know all her secrets; it adds a nice layer to the tune as the single dances around with jittering guitar notes. And, if you’re looking to be charmed, then don’t shy away from the beautiful chorus the band bring forth in this track. Definitely a rad band to keep in mind!
Well it is nearly time people, we have but one week left before things get a little nuts here in Austin and SXSW gets underway. Make sure you’ve stocked your fridge with the essentials and finalized any travel plans if you are visiting us from out of town. It will be a crazy week and you don’t want to lose time by not being prepared. With one week to go, we still have a few of our SXSW interviews to share with you all. We caught up with Best Move, as they prepare to head our way for the festival.
