Just last week we shared the new track from Mamalarky, who have some roots here in our hometown…so we reached out to Livvy to see if she could answer our questionnaire, and she graced us with the kindness to respond. We’ve also included the band’s tour dates during SXSW at the end of the interview.
When you come to SXSW you never know what you’re going to stumble into, but 9/10, its going to be something with a lot of buzz. In the case of Rosie Tucker, the buzz is deserved, with songs to support the current hype. They will be releasing Never Not Never Not Never Not this Friday via New Professor. Read on for questionnaire responses, as well as a list of SXSW shows.
If you’ve read these pages, you’ve likely heard me compare Herzog to the American version of Sloan. It’s a certified fact; they’re incapable of writing a bad song. But, with that said, they might not be on your radar…such is the fate of the greats. So, get to know them below and hunt them down at SXSW.
Looks like our SXSW portion of today is geared towards introducing you to a few acts playing our ATH vs SOTO party, which is an all local show over at Hotel Vegas on March 10th. But, we realize there will be lost of travelers in town, so let us introduce you to the Black Drumset today, in hopes you’ll come out and see them; it’s FREE!
While the late 00s garage/surf re-hash got tired after a few years, it’s still one of my favorite sounds, particularly when it’s presented in a refreshing manner, like Chicago’s Dehd are doing. You can hear that sound immediately, matched by steadying percussion; it’s catchy too, but it’s the chorus that comes in right at the thirty second mark that really drew me into the song. It takes the track into an almost soulful ballad, though it always holds onto the band’s sense of exuberance with the “sha la la la” that crash at the end of the chorus. Catchy and nostalgic, this track makes the forthcoming WaterLP very promising; it drops on May 10th via Fire Talk.
I’ve no doubt you’ve already heard me rave on and on about Fanclub, one of our favorite current Austin acts. Well, we realized that not everyone is as familiar with them as we are, so we tossed them our SXSW questionnaire, so you can all fall in love like we did. Plus, if you’re in town on March 10th, you can catch the band at Hotel Vegas for our ATH vs SOTO party!
It’s Friday, and we’re celebrating March 1st with the release of the brand new Dear Boy EP. What better way to celebrate than to get to know the project before our big SXSW festival (it’s only two weeks away?). Read on and get to know the group before they head our way, and then go listen to their new EP.
As we roll on with our SXSW coverage, we’ve go forward today with a little love from Juiceboxxx. Luckily, there’s a new album on the way in the Fall, so if you catch him during the festival, as you should, then perhaps you’ll get to sample some of these new jams for yourself.
You might have seen our poster for the ATH vs SOTO party (and if not, go HERE) leading you to wonder aloud who on Earth is Dorio? Well, you’ve likely heard Mr. Chaz Doriocourt in some various fashion over the past few years in Austin, and now you can sample his new project below. It’s a really strong pop vibe; I really appreciate the various layers in the song’s arrangement…a nice surprise. Even better, there’s a video with Chaz clowning about and living life to the max with a huge grin upon his face. Such a good tune you don’t wanna sleep on.
Former Austinites Mamalarky have something interesting brewing here with their new track “Hero.” Opening up the package, you’re tricked into this angular psych rocker, quickly fading into twinkling keyboard notes and the dreamy vocals of Livvy Bennett. I was sold on that formula alone, but they add another turn into the song’s map, switching into full-on pop bravado with a churning chorus that’s built to spin you around; it has the sunshine one would expect from a move to Los Angeles. If vibrant psychedelic pop music is your thing, then look no further…the band will also appear at this year’s SXSW so add them to your list.
