You all know that we love the boys in Tiger Waves, so it’s great to see that they’re finally getting some love from others on the Internet besides us. They’re about to release a 7″ via Canvasback, and it features some old tunes, but one we’ve never run before, which premiered on the webs yesterday. This tune is the B-Side to their single, and it illustrates precisely why we’ve been fond of these dudes for so long. It’s sunny and casual, yet there’s a lot of work into the construction of the track; I’m always impressed into the layering and creativity they put into their songs. So, enjoy a new tune from some friends, and pick up their new release today!

It’s a bit of a slow weekend in Austin for national touring acts so what better time to get out there and support your local musicians? Easily your best opportunity for some great local music comes on Friday night at Holy Mountain with a vinyl release show celebrating the touchdown of Royal Forest’s new album Spillway. Making the show that much better is the undercard with local favorites Frank Smith, Tiger Waves, and Your Friendly Ghost all joining in on the fun. Not sure I could put together a better local bill if you asked me to. Get out there, tip your bartenders, and buy some merch jerks.

No! This is not Bob Marley’s Wailers, but the great Austin act, the Whalers. They’re celebrating the release of their new single by throwing a great show over at the Belmont this Saturday night. What’s even better, they’re letting us give away a pair of tickets to the show! If you’re not convinced yet, check out the incredible Austin talent supporting them: Tiger Waves, The Baker Family and Jesse Woods. I’m pretty sure anyone with good tastes will want to make their way out. All you have to do is leave a comment with your 4th of July plans, and I’ll pick a winner. Our contest will close at 5 PM on Friday, July 5th. Good luck….and if you don’t win, you can still go check out great Austin music.

Saturday was busy. A couple of smaller shows were happening with ATH favorites playing at Holy Mountain and The Mohawk‘s inside stage. Matt Pond PAbrought along Matrimony in the former and Superhumanoids played the latter. It was nice of them to ask locals Tiger Waves and Orthy to join in, respectively.
I wore comfortable shoes (fashion faux pas flip-flops actually), grabbed the little camera, brought along the wife, alerted the friends and proceeded to mosey between venues on the Red River corridor. Join me for a little photo journey, won’t you?
Lots of shows are going down this weekend in Austin, but my most highly anticipated show has got to be Matt Pond PA stopping into town at Holy Mountain. Having been a fan of the band for such a long time, I’ve personally been looking forward to another chance to catch the band in the live setting for a long time. To make things even better this lineup is loaded with North Carolinians Matrimony and local favorites Tiger Waves. Come join the ATH crew for a solid evening of tunes.

If you’ve looked at the upcoming shows listing for Austin, April is about to get really crazy ya’ll, so why not start things off right by spending an evening with some of the best local bands Austin has to offer. We’ve raved about all of these bands for a long time, and I know that at least three of the four acts are working on new albums/singles, so you’re bound to hear some fresh tunes. Shivery Shakes are tighter than ever. Tiger Waves, I love them. She Sir make smart pop that I adore. Shrines I haven’t seen, but to be on this bill, you know they’re rad. Seriously everyone, it’s a cheap show, so come out and support local music. Here’s some jams from the Shakes, the Waves and the Sir in case you needed convincing.
We’re really happy to be teaming up with yet a bunch of other rad Austinites to help promote a great little day show over at the New Movement Theater on 7th and Lavaca…its close to all cool happenings. Bryan over at Pop Press International is the big organizer, and he’s gotten some great bands together, including traveling acts and local acts (we’ve got rep our town bro!). There will be adult beverages from Adelberts and Lone Star, free tacos til they’re gone and more…so show up and have fun. Click on for more info on the show! Read more
Rainy weather won’t keep us down, especially if we’ve got rock n’ roll on our minds. The Mohawk gradually swelled to capacity with Foxygen and Unknown Mortal Orchestra having a huge draw in town, both touring behind pretty solid album releases in 2013. I even stuck around to watch our friends Tiger Waves do their thing on the indoor stage afterwards.
Read on for brief thoughts and Brian’s rad photos.
Tiger Waves is an ATH fave. We are fans and you should be to, the fresh vinyl pending on ATH records.
We have your interest piqued? Well, you won’t get to see them for a bit as they just hit the road. To send them off, they played the Purity Ring after show. It was pretty damn crowded, despite being a Tuesday night. Love it.
Pics and dates…
Look, I know all of Austin is excited for the SOLD OUT Purity Ring set at Mohawk, as I hear the band is a big deal. But, that being said, if you’re not sticking around afterwards or not headed into the venue when the show is over, you’re going to miss out on two of Austin’s most promising acts. We’ve been behind Black Books and Tiger Waves from the start, and the more each group progresses, the more we continue to be amazed by their performances. Plus, Tiger Waves head out on tour the next day to represent Austin, so we’ve gotta send our boys off on the right foot! I promise those of you with an appreciation for interesting pop music, you won’t want to skip out. Here’s a song by Tiger Waves and Black Books, respectively, just to entice you a bit more.
