New Single From Elephant Gym

Man Top Shelf Records has really taken over this year and has put out some of my very favorite albums this year. I would dare say that they are my top label of the year. Continuing their reign of success this year, the label has a new album release from Taiwanese band Elephant Gym entitled World coming out on December 14th. Prior to that release, you must check out this new single “Happy Prince” which features guest vocals from Yile Lin. This thing is deceptive in all the right ways, as it lures you in with a mellow beginning, but then really sets off on an adventure of energy and prog rock vibes. Jam.

World is available for pre-order from Top Shelf Records now.

Subsonic Eye Share J-O-B

Though the name may be unfamiliar, you will soon want to know everything you can about Singapore based Subsonic Eye after you check out their new single “J-O-B.” I’ve personally already listened to it about 3 times this morning and grow ever enthralled by how such a young band can have such a tight and expansive sound. This one is sure to hit those end of summer playlists before we close out for the season.

New single “J-O-B” will appear on a new album from Subsonic Eye entitled All Around You which is due out on September 13th via Top Shelf Records. Pre-orders are live now.

Missed This Gulfer Tune

Fridays in the music world have become crazy during quarantine as this seems to be the popular day for new music to drop all over the place. With that in mind, I miss things from time to time, like this impressive new single called “Forget (Friendly) from Montreal based band Gulfer. For those who know my musical tastes, one can quickly see why I would share a song like this despite my tardiness. The track clearly has some of those late emo vibes I love when the genre started getting grittier, with a more punk rock influence seen in bands like The Casket Lottery or Cursive. If nothing else, you have to love the tense, emotionally driven vocals from leading man Vincent Ford.

Gulfer will release this song on their new, self-titled LP due out on October 16th via a joint effort between Top Shelf Records and Royal Mountain Records.

Yesterday’s News: Blisspop From No Vacation

Acquaint yourself with San Francisco’s No Vacation, a five piece who are going to make it to the top of your list of great dream pop bands. This new video that premiered yesterday for “Mind Fields” has been stuck in my head all day and I daresay if you take a listen below, it’ll embed itself into yours as well. There’s the great balance to the track, distilling the gorgeous vocals in these subtly cutty guitars. The song is bedroom pop meets dreamy riffs with a catchy chorus and it reminds me a bit of Hospitality. Check it out below.

Banger From Happy Diving

unnamed (3)As many of us are likely struggling to get moving today after too much fun yesterday, this new single from San Francisco’s Happy Diving might be the perfect hangover cure. Yeah “Holy Ground” may start off as a sort of slacker rock tune, but hold tight, the true wall of guitars comes in pretty quick. The meandering feel, with that slow build into awesomeness is sure to perk up your Tuesday. It’s done it for me.

Electric Soul Unity will drop on August 19th via Topshelf Records.

You Blew It! – Keep Doing What You’re Doing

ybiRating: ★★½☆☆

The Emo movement of the early nineties spurred a number of bands that you either loved or hated to jam to, like The Get Up Kids, or Sunny Day Real Estate. You Blew It! offers their own take on Emo, but does this revival band from Orlando, consisting of three“cat-loving, taco-eating dudes” give a nice new take on a past genre, or are they digging up a sound that should remain buried by a decade? The answer lies largely in if you enjoyed the waves of Emo sound the first time they came around, as Keep Doing What You’re Doing riffs off this.

If you weren’t already acquainted with this band from their debut release, Grow Up, Dude, don’t worry, as the instant you press play on opener “Match and Tinder,” you get a sense of what this band is all about. Shredding guitar is soon doubled up on itself with heavily cymbal-laden percussion joining the mix for a hot minute until Tanner Jones’ intentionally strained screaming vocals burst in, kicking the door down. It’s a lot for a first track, and may scare some off, but for those who stick around, this trio has some softer numbers, and some equally as jarring tunes remaining on the album.

One song that strikes a happy medium between these two alternatives is “Strong Island,” which is third up to bat. The hyper-active percussion and hard guitar riffs are still there, but Jones isn’t quite straining his voice so much, though it still retains its strength and guttural power. The affect that these softer vocals have on the sound is that the lyrics are suddenly accessible, and herein lies the other half of this bands revival of Emo—the deeply self reflective writing. The choral tag of this third track bleeds out: “I’m still finding pieces of me that I could live without.” Such emotional and sometimes self-deprecating lyrics are commonplace for You Blew It!

This thirty-four minute brief album serves as a nice little slice of violence. What I mean when I say that, is that the rough edges and thrashing guitar juxtapose with the emotional lyrics to provide a fresh, crisp taste on a genre that flourished not so long ago.
