Mirror Trash Release Faraway

UK quartet Mirror Trash have made their way onto these pages before, and it’s high time we gave them another run with their striking new single, “Faraway.” The song features a minute of dreamy guitar meandering, wondering through the atmospheric universe. Those notes hang just on the edge of jangling, the way I like them. Then, these solemn vocals into the foray, almost disinterested, up until the chorus. There, you get this little attitude adjustment that should certainly charm as the guitars take back the lead and shimmer into the foreground. The band are slated to release a new EP early next year, and this is our first sneak peak at what’s ahead!

Treeboy & Arc Announce New EP

If anything good came out of Covid lockdowns, it has to be the slew of new music artists created during their long time stuck at home. Leeds based Treeboy & Arc were one of those busy groups during quarantine, having managed to record an entire EP of new material. The new extended player, Life Preserver, includes four new tracks of material with this lead single, “Role Models”, streaming prior to the full August 6th EP release date. I love how the track pushes what we might consider post-punk tendencies but with a more restrained approach to give it a very Devo meets Idles feel. I think you’ll enjoy it.

Paper Birch Share Love for the Things Yr Not

UK outfit Paper Birch is a fairly recent collaborative project between Fergus Lawrie and Dee Sada, trading sounds and experiments between London and Glasgow, all of which led to the recording of the duo’s debut, morninghairwater. The press release calls in some Velvets nods, which you can definitely hear just from the emotional feel, but what I really like is the sort of static on those guitar chords. For some reason, it sounds like someone’s amp has a slight short at the input, yet still is able to emanate this beautiful noise. Plus, the balance of the vocals between Lawrie and Sada is something that should have you excited for the release of the LP; morninghairwater will drop on July 30th via Reckless Yes.

Liz Lawrence Tells Us Where the Bodies are Buried

My infatuation with Liz Lawrence today is all about her willingness to take bits and pieces of various fads and weave them into something new and refreshing, like she’s done with her new tune. Opening with some vocoder vocals here kind of threw me for a loop, as it seemed to offset the power of her voice. But, then the bass enters and that vocoder fades, allowing Lawrence to dominate the track. Suddenly, a huge riff drops in and blows your hair back, then just as quickly a few synth stabs takes the tune and gives it this infectious bounce. While the raucous moments are enthralling, she even teases a touch of dreaminess too in between all her built-in hooks. A powerful tune for people who like to power dance in their bedrooms!

The GOA Express Share Second Time Video

Listening to this new GOA Express tune, there’s all sort of reasons to fall in love with it, and honestly, I’m not sure what I’m quite fawning over. Those light jangling guitars give me just the right dose of guitar pop; they’re crisp but sedate too, so they kind of leave all this room for the vocals to sort of shimmy in and out. Speaking of those vocals, there’s this great familiarity to them, and while I’m currently unable to place them, they definitely reek of 90s Britpop, something I’ll never shy away from. Touch of nostalgia, touch of pop…now all you need is a touch to your wallet to pre-order the band’s new 7″ dropping in June via Ra Ra Rok.

Breathe Panel Share Spring Single

Since they released their debut LP in 2018, Breathe Panel have mostly been quiet…until today. They return with this softened brand of guitar pop; utilizing comforting melodies and the faintest of jangling guitars for their charm offensive. I love how everything in this song, from the video to the name to the style all seem to tie into one great release; the colors change outside the window as the trees blow ever so gently in the wind…exactly as that’s happening outside our own window. This is a pop tune at its very purest, asking for little more than three minutes of your time today; it will surely be time well worth it.

Tugboat Captain Share Day to Day

It’s a bummer that SXSW cancelled because I was really looking forward to catching Tugboat Captain around town. In fact, this was one of the early songs that caught my ear, though this version has been updated and built up with textured instrumentation and an additional vocal performant from Flirting’s Poppy Waring. This version’s really working for me today; it sounds like if the Spook School shunned their pop punk ways and fell in love with Stuart Murdoch…basically its like hyper-twee pop rock, and we’re all better that its out in the world. If you’re like me, and you’ve been piqued by the band’s work, then be on the lookout for Rut in October via Double A Side Records.

Striking New Tune From Arran George

It’s rare to find a song that really transfixes you and transports you away to somewhere else, but that’s just what this song “18 Wheeler” from Cumbria based artist Arran George is doing for me today. The tune is superb at combining a simple acoustic guitar with a bedroom pop approach and some subtle effects here and there. You can also find yourself getting totally lost near the end during the last 45 seconds or so of the song. It’s a stunner.

Arran George will feature this song on a new EP entitled Born Under a Pylon out later this year.

 

Driving Number From Pynch

As we all continue to push through more quarantine life this summer, it’s been fantastic for us music bloggers to keep receiving so much new music from artists working from home. Today we have this new tune called “Somebody Else” which was written and produced by songwriter Spencer Enock for his band Pynch. The tune definitely has a more lo-fi take on the garage rock genre of a band like The Strokes if their songs incorporated a more driving sound with epic progressions. As someone who typically looks for those solid and spell binding song progressions, this one is right up my alley.

Raucous New Single From Home Counties

Bristol based band Home Counties may be a new name to you, though you likely knew them under their old moniker Haze. Now with a new name, the guys are debuting this ferocious and electrifying new single called “Redevelopment”. It features a nice melting pot of genres, seeing elements of jerky late 80s bands intertwined well with a more post-punk sound. Whatever label you want to slap on their sound, you have to admit that it is a truly unique and refreshing style. Stay tuned on more from these guys in the future as they release more music.
