Will Johnson Announces Diamond City
You ever fall in love with a musical voice that just breaks you? Well, many years ago a friend handed me an old Centro-matic CD, and I’ve been hooked on Will Johnson ever since. Today, we’re stoked to bring you the great news that Will’s got a new record on the horizon, with a single that perfectly exemplifies my fascination. This song features sort of off-the-rhythm percussion and a twanging guitar, all of it creating this full-to-the-brim backdrop, yet somehow clinging to this starkness that allows Johnson’s voice to succeed. I love how he can move in-between throated warble and intimate whisper, letting the song open up with these soaring backing harmonies that provide an amazing accent to the track. Diamond City will be out on April 4th via Keeled Scales.
There were a lot of jams, and there wasn’t a lot of time, and all that to say, I still got an excuse to write about the new Cistern EP, with it’s banging opening track included below. Prism Shores continued to shell out hits, while Austin act SKLOSS return with news of their signing to Fuzz Club Records. The Rishis dropped in some delightful psychedelic pop, if that’s your bag, and if not, well maybe you get a little folk on your feet and crank up new Will Johnson for our ears. It seems weird to say, but last week was the first time in a long time where I was able to find every song we covered on all the DSPs! Does this mean I’ve gone mainstream? Anyways, we had a few premieres running from the likes of Class and Alijca-Pop, so be sure to check those jams out.. And, as per usual, dipped our toes in the Austin pond, with new stuff from Holy Wire and the stream of Will Johnson‘s new LP. Clearly, based on the name of our site, we’re always down to represent Austin, and while I feel like releases were down in the city this year, there was tons of great stuff to be devoured. Rather than rank and file our friends; we’re just here to uplift the scene, and maybe remind you of some Texas music that might have (it shouldn’t!) slipped under your radar. Black Pumas got the deserved love, but there’s tons bubbling beneath the surface. I mostly broke it into labels, as they’re the heart and soul of this city. Comes with a fancy playlist.
