I Saw Young Buffalo & Matt Pond PA @ Stubbs

Upload Pond Buffalo 03On Sunday I started my week off on a positive note by heading down to see one of my long time favorite bands Matt Pond PA.  Making the evening even better was an opening set by a more recent favorite of mine Young Buffalo.  Though both bands could feel the sleepiness of the crowd due to possible long weekends, everyone seemed to have quite the good time.  Follow the jump for some thoughts and recent music from both bands.

Young BuffaloIt’s always a struggle to get back to work after over a week of play time.  Reminiscing helps ease the sleepy eyes and doldrums so lets have another look back at the awesome week of music that was.  Nathan kicked us off yesterday with some fine observations and I’ll continue the opinions today about the SXSW music week.  Follow the jump for my awards.

Date 7/16/14
Location Mohawk
Doors 9pm
Tickets $10 @ Mohawk

As I’m scrolling through the upcoming shows this week, I stumbled across this great bill at Mohawk on Wednesday that I must have forgotten about.  Headlining the loaded bill is longtime ATH favorite UK rockers The Crookes.  Joining the guys on the bill are fellow ATH favorite Young Buffalo and local artist Stoney.  This should make for a great middle of the week show to start your weekend early.  See you there?

Austin Town Hall Presents: White Arrows @ Red 7 (9.20)

Hey folks, I know Thursday is super packed with great bands in town, but if you’re going to some of the early shows, like Fiona Apple or Beach House, then afterwards you need to join us over at Red 7.  We’re stoked to be working with Transmission to present White Arrows in their glorious return to Red 7.  I am still enjoying their latest release, Dry Land Is Not a Myth, which is filled with hooks galore.  Last time we caught the band, they absolutely blew us away, giving us a stronger live show than I think any of us expected.  They’ll be joined by friends Young Buffalo to open up the evening, and with Doors @ 9 PM, you’ll have time to finish your beer and round out your night pop bliss.

Tickets – $8 from Transmission

Nice Pop Jam from Young Buffalo

After releasing the excellent Young Von Prettylips EP earlier this year, Young Buffalo is back with a brand new track to win you over today.  The duo has just released a new single that we’ve got here for you today, titled “Baby Demons.”  There’s a bit of an angular jaunt that kicks off the track, but the distance of the vocals really give this track an old school sort of feel to it, and not in that blatantly nostalgic sort of way.  If the band keeps writing tracks like this one, then there’s telling where they’ll go, but our bet is that it’s going to be awesome.

Show Review: Arctic Monkeys @ Stubbs

The show preview mentioned the potential to be drenched in sweat. Many were. It was hot. Stubb’s staff was kind enough to throw bottles of water into the crowd that wouldn’t dare give up their spots down front for something as silly as fluids.

Alex Turner and the boys picked a helluva time to play an outside show in Austin, but touring in support of a recently released album sometimes requires scheduling to be less than perfect. It was a frenzied atmosphere, softened slightly by summer. To their credit, I recall the phrase “If you ask us, it’s not hot enough” being used to get the crowd even more worked up. The Arctic Monkeys put on a brilliant performance with openers Young Buffalo earning their deserved buzz.

More details and plenty of pics after the break…

Show Preview: Arctic Monkeys (8/2)

Date Tuesday, August 2nd
Location Stubbs
Doors 700pm
Tickets SOLD OUT

Okay, so this is a SOLD OUT show, but you know how it goes over at Stubbs; there’s bound to be some scalpers who bought twenty tickets to sell to you and your friends. I think it’s worth a try, considering what a remarkably energetic band the Arctic Monkeys are on the stage, with bouncing rhythms and angular guitar chops. And, on top of that you get to see one of our favorite new acts, Young Buffalo, who we posted about a few weeks back.  If you can find your way in somehow, I’m pretty sure you’ll leave drenched in sweat, feeling that it was worth every minute.

New Tunes from Young Buffalo

I have a feeling that people are going to find it hard to pigeon-hole Young Buffalo.  They’re set to release their Young Von Prettylips EP on Cantora Records on July 18th, and they’ve been kind enough to send out a track to give people a listen.  At first, I thought I heard hints of TV on the Radio, but in the middle, the song erupts into a joyous akin to Local Natives, especially with the percussive presence.  However, they seem to have re-imagined that sound, giving something a wee bit different, then softly flowing back into the atmospheric construction that began the song.  If you can’t find a genre to throw at these guys, probably should just stick with the fact that they’re just plain good.
