New Sleepy Pop from Sea Oleena

I’ve got to give out a shout to our reader James for bringing this wonderful track to my attention.  Sea Oleena is Canadian songwriter Charlotte Oleena, who composed the songs for her most recent self-titled album with the help of her brother.  It’s got this dream quality to it, but more in that wooded dream as opposed to the more dense dream-pop of late. Something about Oleena’s voice really draws you into her songs, encouraging you to devour every last second of the record.  You can grab the album for the special “name your price” deal over at her Bandcamp.

ATH @ ACL 2011 – Sunday

The news of the Longhorns’ victory lifted spirits, Cut Copy killed it – Saturday was a good day. I was tired, yet nervous and excited. The rain, though nearby and luckliy watering our lawns, never really pounded the grounds. Sunday was a day with a few bands I knew I wouldn’t see otherwise.

Head on past the break for the final batch of images from Sunday.

Is Ryan Adams Back?

Let’s just get it out of the way now that I am not one of those people that pisses on everything created by Ryan Adams since his debut solo masterpiece Heartbreaker. Sure, that album is one of a kind, but the dude has also put out some solid records by himself and with The Cardinals since then.  That being said, I will confirm that the most recent albums produced by Ryan have been close to un-listenable.  A heavy metal album?  A dual disc record of mostly Cold Roses B-Side?  And of course the atrocity known as Cardinology… Pass, pass and triple pass.  Well, now Mr. Adams has a few new songs floating around the interwebs which show real promise of a return to form for the veteran songwriter.  This new track “Lucky Now” is one of those promising tunes that’s been on the web as a stream for quite some time, but was just made free for downloading.  It shows a man that’s grown tired of gimmicks and B.S., and might finally be ready to make us all happy again.  Ryan Adams’ new album Ashes and Fire is due out October 11th.  Our amigos over at The Gum have posted several more new tunes that you should check out.

Show Preview: Jacuzzi Boys @ Red 7 (9/23)

Date Friday, Sept. 23rd
Location Red 7
Doors 900p
Tickets Tickets @ the Door

Hopefully you’ve had a minute or two to recover from ACL, or from avoiding ACL, whichever way you see fit, but it’s time to get back into the swing of things. One of the many great shows this weekend is the Jacuzzi Boys, fresh off their release of the excellent Glazin record for Hardly Art.  It’s full of catchy garage pop, the sort that never fails to keep your feet tapping and your head bobbing–maybe even a bit of old school pogo.  It’s going to be an energetic little punk show, so you gotta get out there.  You can all catch, The Act Rights, Elvis, and The Early Stages kicking the show off.  I’ll see you there!

ATH @ ACL 2011 – Saturday

Friday night’s headliners meant leaving the park early and challenging my liver at a friend’s house upstairs from Zilker. That first hill is brutal. We snacked, reminisced, planned and then went our separate ways to get some sleep for Saturday. Would we get the big rain?

Head on past the break for some images from Saturday.

More New Music from The Sweet Ones

Just last week I bought a filthy bit of garage pop from The Sweet Ones, but this new track from their album Big Mistakes, which is out now, shows a little bit of a softer side.  Well, there’s definitely a bit of sloppiness, but it’s intentional; it gives the power-pop just enough to make you appreciate their grittiness. Surely you’ll find yourselves falling for this band as I have, at least I hope so.

New Music from Golden Bear

We were fortunate enough to throw some love to Golden Bear on our Summer Mixtape, offering up the new track “Who We Are” for you to enjoy.  Still, as the October release date for the band’s new record, Alive, nears, we wanted to throw out another track that’s been floating around.  It’s more pop rock goodness from these local boys, indicating that you’re set to have a whole new record worth of tunes for your vast enjoyment.  The light keyboard/piano sound in the background really provides some great little details to this number.  Hope you enjoy it, and get behind this great local act.

New Music From Still Corners

I somehow missed on new music from Still Corners when it was announced awhile back, but I’m on board new and have been enjoying the new album Creatures of an Hour.  Prior to it’s release date on October 11th via Sub Pop, I can only offer you a taste of the album with it’s second single entitled “Into the Trees”.  Hopefully it will help point you in the direction of that release date.  The first single from the record, “Cuckoo”, can be heard over on the Sub Pop website.

Blitzen Trapper – American Goldwing

Rating: ★★½☆☆

It’s strange; sometimes, bands that have been around for a while often don’t change their sound, be it for fear that they will lose those who became enraptured by their original sound, or that they just don’t see themselves as anything else than what they were before. This seems to be the case with Blitzen Trapper on this album, as their only shift seems to be to a bit more of a bluesy spin on their Americana craft.

American Goldwing is one of those albums that just don’t have enough chutzpah to keep me focused and interested in for more than five songs. It starts out fairly strong, even though nothing novel, but progressively ceases to retain my interest as the songs drag on and on to its close. The first song, “Might Find It Cheap,” sums up this phenomenon in a single swoop. Yea, it’s a good song and I can get down with those fuzzy guitars and the traditionally tangy vocals, I just feel like I’ve heard it from Blitzen Trapper before. Their distinct crookedly country Americana rock sound works against them in that the sound from previous albums resonates deeper and makes it hard to listen to these tracks when I know there are astoundingly better renditions on Furr or other prior albums.

My favorite track on this record comes third, at a time where I’m looking for something to spice up this album. “Love the Way You Walk Away,” takes a new stance that I’ve been longing for this band to take. Even though it is of a country note, which I don’t often find myself enjoying, there is new territory to be covered at last. Bluesy undertones patter in the background while harmonies swoon in the foreground. If you listen carefully, you can hear deep bass drums at some points and of course there is that steel pedal guitar that pushes the song around in dominance. Late in the track, this band slows things down with a little harmonica and it’s easy to find yourself singing right alongside Eric Earley and the rest of the gang. It’s simply the song with the most redeeming and interesting qualities to be found on American Goldwing.

By all means, if you are a Blitzen Trapper addict, you’ll love this album. It has everything that you’ve already been shown, perhaps with one or two tracks that take a new direction. As for me, and I’m sure others, I’m in need of something a little bit fresher to keep me intrigued in this band’s sound. Perhaps it is coming on their next release, or perhaps I just need to revisit those old gems in the catalog of this band.
