Austin Spotlight: Keep an Eye on Slow

slowerA few weeks ago I was hanging out at Hotel Vegas to catch Literature (shame you guys weren’t there); I knew most of the bands on the bill, but I hadn’t heard Slow yet.  I was really impressed, particularly with the guitar playing, which was noisy just like it…and you can hear a nice little solo in the middle of this tune.  I feel like it’s our job to keep an eye out on rad bands coming out, and I feel like it’s been kind of humdrum lately.  So, you should definitely keep an eye on this band; they’ll be playing the Fleshlights album release show over at Vegas on November 4th, but be warned, it’ll be loud.  Oh, and this tune is a demo, so don’t get all audiophile on me!

Twangy Rock From T. Hardy Morris

t_hardymorris_01As we move into our early week tunes, have a listen to this great track from T. Hardy Morris.  Now some of you may have heard this one already so just bear with me for a minute.  It’s a great country inspired rock track that is worthy of a few plays despite my tardiness.  Think Blitzen Trapper or Deer Tick with more of a punk rock tendency.  Let’s make it through the week…

“Painted on Attitude” is part of a two song single currently for sale on bandcamp.

You’ll Want to Buy this Cherry Glazer 7″

cherryJust a few weeks ago I posted about the brand new 7″ from Cherry Glazer, which featured the hit, “Had Ten Dollaz.”  It was a sultry rocker that I couldn’t escape, playing the tune over and over again. But, now they’ve offered up the B-Side to the 7″ they’ll be releasing for Suicide Squeeze.  To me, this is probably one of the most promising young bands, and their knack for songwriting was already present on Haxel Princess, so consider this the biggest rising star for your money.  You cab pick up the new 7″ today.

Criminal Hygiene Wow Us Again

Criminal HygieneCome on now, unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few years, you’re aware of our love affair with all things Criminal Hygiene.  These guys have been pleasing our ears since we first heard their music and we try to do all we can to spread the good word about quality sounds.  With all that out of the way, the boys just sent us this lovely new track called “Turpentine”.  What starts as a poppy sort of rock tune yields its way to yet another raucous and guitar laden track from a rowdy rock band.  It just keeps getting better and better.  If you don’t know, get wise fool.

Show Pics: Merchandise @ Strange Matter (10/23)

MerchandiseI missed my Austin, but Cleveland was pretty cool and I ended up getting an Austin vibe from Richmond, Y2K Austin vibe. It is a smaller place, college town, passed over by national tours and a filler stop for guys in vans.

ATH on the road checked in at Strange Matter. It is a venue that again reminds me of the old Emo’s inside, only with a full kitchen that can satisfy your burger cravings while you girlfriend gnoshes on Vegan faire. Playing at Strange Matter was Merchandise. Italy’s Ninos Du Brasil are on the road with Merch and locals Dead Fame and Bermuda Triangles rounded out the bill.

Click through for a few thoughts and plenty of pics…

New Album from The Memories

memorieI’ve got some tunes from the Memories; I like the band well enough, I just feel like they could do a bit more.  But, it looks like that time has finally come, as the band are readying a new album that’s been worked over by Sonny Smith, who I trust above many others.  There’s already a subtle R&B production to the tune, while the band maintains their approach to brevity in their songwriting; it sort of reminds me of Girls early on…you know, when that band meant something. Look for the band’s new LP Hot Afternoon next month from Burger Records.

New Technicolor Hearts Track & Video

technicolorTechnicolor Hearts are an outfit from ’round these parts that we introduced you to about a year ago. Well, this group has a new track for you: “Pocahaunted,” combined with a creepy video featuring the band getting witchy with it. The song moves pretty slow at first, giving you this electronic eerie vibe to pick up on before the psychedelic guitars move into play. Honestly, I was a little on the fence with this song at first, but the end of it keeps drawing me back– the group adds some string work in the background that finishes on this ethereal and detailed note that I really enjoy. Take a listen for yourself below and watch the music video here.

Some Local Monday Night Must See Shows

gobAlright folks…I know it’s Halloween week, so everyone is looking for things to do, and shows to attend where costumes are accepted.  Tonight, Monday, you’ve got one option, plus another show that should be on your radar.  Hotel Vegas has a mellow show on the bill, which might be in contrast to what you’ve know from the venue, but don’t miss some of these acts, namely RF Shannon and Plantation; Plantation is the project of Carlton, who is also part of our boys Grape St. But, if you’re inclined to show off that costume you’ve been working on, you should head over to the Goblin-A-Go-Go at Mohawk this evening. That event is free and starts at 8 PM, featuring A Giant Dog, pumpkin carving, and contests and drawing galore.

Turn Up with Wild Smiles

10386988_628923807203351_9116171390421186735_oThere are two sides of the power-pop/garage rock coin, at least two that I can always subscribe to when listening.  There’s the gritty version, filled with sloppy hooks, or there’s the polished huge riffs.  The perfect example of this, in my mind, comes in the battle of Terry Malts vs. Wild Smiles.  I love the Malts and their gritty style, taking nostalgic rock and fueling it with booze and exuberance.  But, the Wild Smiles, who I’m here to talk about, take a similar approach, but clean things up, giving you more accessible hooks. You’re supposed to love both!  And if you do, you already have the Terry Malts LP (or else you’re behind the times), so go ahead an pick up the Wild Smiles LP, Always Tomorrow, and enjoy the rest of your day.
