Psychedelic Soul from France Camp

purgeWe’ve got Levitation (formerly Austin Psych Fest) on our brains around the ATH offices, and I’m already suggesting to the festival that they sign up France Camp for next year’s fest.  This first single off their new album, Purge, has exactly what you’ve wanted you’re psych rock tune to sound like, especially if you like your song to have some precision.  Sure, you can hear that guitar sound, but it doesn’t wander too far, staying perfectly in place with the tune to bring this tight cohesion that benefits your listening experience. This new LP will be released in limited numbers via Forged Artifacts on May 19th, so be sure you’re one of those to get your hands on it.

I Totally Missed This: New Milky Wimpshake LP

encore-un-effortI was browsing RSD, as is my yearly ritual.  I grab a few things, then just wonder around to see if there’s something special…and there it was: a new Milky Wimpshake LP! I had no idea it was coming, but many, it’s such a gem of a little LP.  For those of you that fall for endearing jangling indie pop, then this is going to be right up your alley.  The release is titled Encore, Un Effort…and Fortuna Pop put out this little video of one of the record’s standouts; I love the interplay between male/female vocalists, which is apparent throughout the LP.  Look around your local store, and maybe you’ll find one lurking in the leftovers bin.

ATX Spotlight: Spray Paint Back at It.

Spray-PaintWell, it didn’t take long for the lads in Spray Paint to rack up another set up tunes for listeners.  Last year they releases Clean Blood, Regular Acid, and now they’re prepping Punters on a Barge.  It looks set to sound rather similar to their last effort, with a driving percussive march and spoken vocal delivery.  There’s some guitar ringing here to propel the songs forward, though I’d gladly take a little bit more…just to really amp the barrage of noise one gets in their live-setting. The LP is super-limited, at least at this point, so head over to Homeless Vinyl and pre-order before the album’s June 1st release.

Heather Woods Broderick Shares New Track

unnamed (3)

Heather Woods Broderick, as you may know her from her contribution to Sharon Van Etten‘s band, or from her own previous work, has a new track and announced a new album. While this may already be all over the internet, I like it so much that I feel compelled to share it with you. The new song “A Call For Distance” is haunting and ethereal, gradually easing into motion with swelling synths and keyboards creating a vast soundscape before Woods Broderick chimes in with her gorgeously elegant vocals. If that wasn’t enough, there’s a bit of a build to the track, as the end sees synths layering over each other and some distant percussion adding even more depth. Check out the song and get ready for the new album, Glider, which is out July 10th via Western Vinyl.

Shark Week Return

sharkweek_promo_webBeen awhile since I’ve heard anything from D.C. based Shark Week after a promising start a couple of years surrounding a solid SXSW performance and a few singles here and there.  Today I’m pumped to be sharing with you the first single called “Waste of Time” from the band’s upcoming debut LP.  It’s definitely a more focused effort from what we’ve heard in the past from the band.

New album Beach Fuzz is out on May 19th via PaperCup Music.

A New Song and Album from Barreracudas

11169775_10153293848183410_3988009600278316114_oYou’d have to go all the way back to 2011 to see our adoration for Barreracudas…the ATL power-pop band.  I’ve been waiting for something brand new from the group, and they’ve managed to trickle out a couple of excellent 7″, but it looks like the group has a new full-length coming our way; it’s titled Can Do Easy, and has a release on Oops Baby Records.  This song came along with their announcement, though it’s been part of the band’s live set for a little bit.  You’ll hear huge riffs and hooks, all of which make make me a happy listener.

Show Pics: Eternal Summers & Turbo Fruits @ Holy Mountain (4/20)

Eternal SummersIt was 4/20 and team ATH braved the pot-laden air in Austin to go check out several great bands playing the Monday night show at Holy Mountain. We got a double headlined deal with Eternal Summers and Turbo Fruits along with Kay Odyssey and Rose Selavy. Indie pop gems, rock and/or roll, surf inflicted pop, we had an evening of subtle sub-genre loving. I chucked the manual focus primes into the camera bag and captured moments.

Brief thoughts and plenty of shots await…

Flo Morrissey Puts The Drama in Folk

11164579_955598471171091_4823856459386969506_oI know you’ve heard of Flo Rida but have you heard of Flo Morrissey, the London based singer/songwriter making waves with her vocal prowess and folksy tunes? No? Well, the perfect solution to that issue is to press play on the track below and get lost in the four minutes and fifteen minutes of reserved power. “Show Me,” comes across like a mix between Jessica Pratt and those Swedes First Aid Kit; clearly the vocals are the center point of the song, but at the same time you get the subtle nuances of piano tinkling away in the background to give the song its allure. If you like this track, get ready for her debut album coming out in July for those of us in the States, called Tomorrow Will Be Beautiful.

Hooks and Sunshine From Saltwater Sun

11048684_714288565347271_4455269171299750488_oLittle is known about Saltwater Sun other than that they’re a London based band that seem to have fallen right out of the sky to give us this lush and appealing track. When you first start this song, you really don’t know what you’ve stumbled upon until you reach the first catchy-as-all-get-out chorus, but those sleek white hot guitars should give you some kind of clue as to what you’re getting into. Once you’ve hit the first chorus, a wash of warmth seems to hit you via your headphones as though the sun has broken through the clouds to grace your day, reminding me somehow of a sunnier Metric. The growling female vocals provide the perfect contrast and compliment to the electric guitars and shimmering percussion. This song puts Saltwater Sun on my to-watch list, and they should find themselves on yours as well.

Give a Listen to Craig Martinson

craigoI think you really have to spend some time listening to this Craig Martinson track to really absorb it’s greatness.  In the first minutes it goes from ballad to bouncy psych to Beatlesque pop; it’s not an easy task to make it flow so well together.  It’s a journey that definitely takes time, but as each layer is unfolded, you’ll find yourself falling deeper into the song’s structure, willingly submitting to its power. Look forward to hearing his My Love is True EP; it should be filled with more songs for the journeyman listener.
