ATX Spotlight: Quirky Pop-Punk From Paperback

paperbackOur city is awesome, and we already knew that, but with each additional discovery of yet another solid band, or the reemergence of a band who has been around for a bit, my trust in Austin grows a bit. Paperback, a four piece indie-punk band, are one of those bands making their reemergence to the scene. They’ve got a new EP coming out this Sunday, and it’s bound to be a treat, as you can preview with the track I’ve included below called, “Laughing.” It’s got a nice little bite in the guitars, and the vocals are textbook pop-punk.

They’re playing Hotel Vegas this Sunday to celebrate the release ofNervous Energy. Take a listen to a track below and then head over there and show some love and hear the rest of it.

Dear Blanca Return

unnamed (12)South Carolina based Dear Blanca caught my attention last year with their highly underrated releasePobrecito. Since then the band has been hard at work on some new material and are ready to release this new single “Temporary Solution” to the world. Already I’m hearing a major maturation from the band as we are treated to a delightful pop number with some of the similar folk undertones from their debut LP. Pay attention to these guys starting now.

This track appears on a new EP entitledI Don’t Mean to Dwell due out on March 4th via Post-Echo.

Fresh Music from Eureka California

Eureka_California-photo1-by-Stacey_Piotrowski-852x550The last time we heard from Eureka California was back in 2014 with their album, Crunch (you should already own that one by now). They returned this week with this exhilarating rocker, fueled by distorted guitars and an earnest vocal performance. Before you know it, the song’s over and you press play again, taking you on another rocking journey from these Athens rockers. Their new album will be released on March 26th via Happy Happy Birthday to Me Records; it’s titled Versus…and it’s shaping up to be better than the last one, which is saying a great deal.

Pummeling Punk from Audacity

audcityThe first 30 seconds of this new song from Audacity has the band sounding like their most dangerous, furiously pushing the pace with pounding drums and rambunctious attitude via the guitar. Still, while this might be the heaviest I’ve heard from Audacity, the chorus offers some of their pop sensibility setting up for some great all out guitar jamming until the song’s conclusion. This is our first taste of Hyper Vessels, their newest album (recorded with some Ty Segall character); it’ll be released by Suicide Squeeze Records on April 1st…or will it?

Mellow Rock From Knight Night

11046915_825678424172816_1536771806089696562_oHere at the ATH office, we never really know what kind of emails we are going to get in our inbox, but sometimes you take that chance on a strange looking press release and come up rewarded. That’s what happened here today with the track I have from you from Knight Night. From the picture, I was expecting death metal, what I got instead was an elegantly crafted soft rock tune from this project ofSerafeim Giannakopoulos, which strikes the same sort of tone that we fell in love with from Snowmine. The vocals are sweet and gentle, carrying you through the easy jam. Simultaneously, the guitars meander through the track and the bubbling drums round the whole thing out. There’s even a bit of a build at the end of the delightful tune, one that will satisfy your rock and roll desires. The band’s debut album,God Is A Motherfucker, is out January 29th via Inner Ear Records.

Fresh Electro Folk From Astronauts

1956823_294205520754518_8635240297309042899_oIt’s been about a year since we’ve heard from Astronauts, or the project of London’s Dan Carney. Regardless of that absence, Astronauts are back in the form of a sleek little jam by the name of “Civil Engineer,” which you should take a listen to below. The track simmers for its duration, the synths combine with some gritty undertones of guitar as well as layers of subtle vocals to create a highly textured song. You’ll find it’s easy to lose yourself in the song; Carney’s vocals are soft and entrancing. Stay tuned for the official release of the single on February 19th via Lo Recordings.

PATV Deliver Another Hit

unnamed (11)The entire team here at ATH has shown full support and kind words about NYC based band Public Access TV since we first heard about them a year or so ago. Their sound is such a simple approach to the pop rock genre that I’d find it difficult to understand how anyone could dislike it. Think of them as a Warm Soda or Vaccines like band if you’re needing a comparison. Also check out this new track called “On Location” and let us know what ya think. We dig it.

PATV will release their debut album sometime this summer. Stay tuned.

Pleased to Meet You: Cave Babies

caveMan, I don’t know how we all do it. There’s so much music out there, that it’s hard to really dig into every thing. Luckily, I always can count on a few labels, like Lost Sound Tapes, who today just introduced me to Cave Babies. The label will be releasing a new tape from the project on February 26th, and our first listen has me really intrigued. It reminds of bedroom pop blended with some of the early work of Jens Lekman. There’s an innocence that’s enchanting and hard to pull yourself away from, so take a listen and enjoy your time. Grab a copy from the label HERE.

Beverly Strikes Again With Pop-Punk Bliss

12185003_1051680674852721_2170054358121692146_oBrooklyn’s Beverly has already burst into the indie scene as proponents of the This time around, they’ve enlisted the help of ATH favorite, Kip Berman, of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, to provide his well cultivated guitar riffs and overall magic to their sound. The result is infectious, pop bliss with that choral hook that will have you singing right along. The guitars are edgy and gritty, contrasting with the sleek vocals of Drew Citron. It’s safe to say that we’re excited for their upcoming release,The Blue Swell, which will be out in May on Kanine Records.
