Hard Hitting Rocker from Empty Markets

12695048_533599350155274_8307557657416101671_oFeedback. Pounding drums. You’re in danger as soon as you press play on this brand new Empty Markets track. This is the newest project of Drew Schmitz (Gremlins UK/Cruddy), and I can’t wait to get my hands on their new LP, Stainless Steel. I appreciated the fact that the band never slows, bringing that pummeling pace all the way until the end of the track; it’s almost abrupt, forcing you to go back and listen again…which isn’t a bad thing in this case. Need no frills rock n’ roll? This band is doing it right. Look for their new LP on 12XU on April 8th. The band’s current line-up also features members of other rad 12XU act, Sweet Talk.

Some Psych Pop From Flaurals

unnamed (17)I could pretend I knew something about Denver based pop band Flaural prior to today, but I’d be lying through my teeth. I will however be giving the band my attention after hearing this bright new single entitled “Nonnie”. I’m reminded of bands like Yeasayer or even our old friends Suckers with a bit more of that psych vibe as the driving force. Consider me a fan starting right now.

Flaural will release their new EPOver Imaginary Cigaretteson March 12th.

Dreamy Pop from Crescendo

crescendoI’m really intrigued by the sound that Crescendo is bringing to the table. They’re utilizing the common tropes of fighting guitar with a hazy vocal, often accompanied by a light female vocal accompaniment. But, what’s intriguing me is that the voice sounds like Dan Bejar from Destroyer, and yet, it works quite successfully. I’ve been listening to the band’s new effort, Unless, and I have to say that there’s not a single bad song in the mix. I’m thinking those of you looking for hits from the dream pop/indiepop/shoegaze realm will find this whole listen enchanting. It’s out now via We Were Never Boring.

New Old Tunes from Angry Angles

angryAngry Angles was one of the many projects touched by the late Jay Reatard, and while many of the songs have been heard, they’re getting a good compilation effort from the folks at Goner Records. It’s just another thing to cherish in my JR collection, and remind me of the great songwriter we lost. I’ll probably go back and listen to some of his hits today, probably starting with that Matador Singles Comp; I loved that work. The compilation will be out on Goner on May 20th.

More from New Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith

kaitlIt’s always introducing to hear what Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith comes up with when she sits down to work. A great deal of her efforts have been electronic masterpieces, based mostly on instrumental pieces…this new single has a different feel to it. Her construction is quite similar, but adding vocals to the layered mixture makes me recall some of the denser tracks from The Knife. It takes an already interesting songwriting process to the next level, and I can’t wait to hear the entirety of Ears when it’s released on April 1st by Western Vinyl. She’ll also be making her way to Austin for this year’s Levitation Fest.

Steady Rocker From Wax Witches

12509648_1255646871128919_1310003653927682046_nWax Witches, or the project of Alex Wall, has got a new album coming out in just about a month from Burger Records. In anticipation of this release, he’s shared the single below, “Morning Flowers,” which is a hazy rock tune that centers around the clean guitar riffs and distorted vocals. What’s great about this song is that it meanders, but you enjoy every instant of its sprawl– the track loops and loops on itself until you’re mesmerized in its borderline psych sound.

Be sure to lookout forMemory Painting, which is out March 18th.

Enjoying This Space Raft Track

spaceIf this new Space Raft song didn’t have some of the touches of modern indie rock, I’d swear that it’s a tune coming off the Almost Famous soundtrack; it has that classic rock vibe, though it’s been switched up and turned out in a new fashion. Of course that style just happens to focus on the hooks of pop sensibility, filling it in with great melodies and a distinctive voice. I’ll be interested to hear what the whole of their new album sounds like; Rubicon will be released on April 15th via Dusty Medical Records.

New Music from Scott Orr

scottIt’s been several years since I’ve written anything about Scott Orr, but he’s just put out a new single as part of the Other Songs Music Club, and since I’ve always appreciated his voice (and his work), I can’t help but to put a little note on this out into the world. It begins with he typical fragility, featuring Orr and guitar, but he’s soon taking the track into loftier heights with minimal percussion and female vocal accompaniment. It’s a chilled out tune that hits straight in the heart. Listen below.

Another Eureka California Hit!

Eureka_California-photo1-by-Stacey_Piotrowski-852x550Miss when college rock was filled with substance? Well, this Eureka California single should take you back in time, filling your ears with a heavy distorted guitar and a pummeling rhythm. My only complaint? It’s too short, I wanted this rocker to blast on forever, but of course, I can just play it again and again. There’s something gratifying in a quick blast of energetic angst, so I’ll gladly take this. The group’s new album, Versus, will be released by HHBTM on March 25th.
