ATX Spotlight: Calvin Locklear

I wish I could say I’m surprised when I discover new Austin artists since we think we know everything, but let’s get real, this town is full of up and coming artists waiting to be discovered. Take local songwriter Calvin Locklear for example. Prior to only a few days ago, I honestly had never heard his name mentioned despite my keen ear to the local scene. Well he’s recently released an EPs worth of material entitled No One is Listening and suggested we check out this track “Wet Cement” from the 6 song extended player. Immediately the voice of Locklear reminds me quite a bit of Damon Albarn (Blur/Gorillaz) which, paired with his folk rock/R&B blend, creates something really in a genre all its own. It’s refreshing to hear something new is happening in Austin.

If you’re into it, Locklear has more music on Soundcloud and his entire new EP streaming on bandcamp.

Seductive Pop from Vilde

Remember in that one movie where he played the Beta Band, then everyone went and bought it? Well, I get that sentiment when I watch this video/new tune from Stockholm’s Vilde. There’s this quiet electronic groove that flows beneath the ground, allowing all this room for the angelic voice of Thomas Savage to weave further magic through your speakers. Just as I’m lost in the song, I turn to the video to find a collage of images fading in and out of one another and find myself completely lost in the beautiful madness of my own mind. This is his final piece in the Study Dance collection, and by far the most intoxicating…give it a go.

Frankie Rose Plays Tonight at Barracuda

Those of you that pay any heed to the indie media cred will surely be aware that Frankie Rose released the most excellent Cage Tropical earlier this year via Slumberland; heralded P4K gave it a 7.7! It’s probably her most complete release to date, and she’s bringing it to the live stage tonight at Barracuda. But, even better for you is that opening the night will be our own Tres Oui, who are currently wrapping up a new LP for Shrimper, so you’re bound to hear a whole slew of new gems on stage tonight…plus Steven has some new pedals to show you. In the middle of the set is Suburban Living, so you really can’t go wrong by being in attendance. Doors are at 8!

Nice Pop Number From Little Coyote

Ah yes, we have finally made it to the middle of the week and the weekend is in sight. Helping us celebrate our hump day today is Toronto based Little Coyote and their promising new track “Medicine”. When I first heard the song, I was immediately attracted to the driving, almost yearning sound of the song. It has this weird sense of urgency building throughout while still showing a calm and tight production effort.

Little Coyote will release The Trouble With Teeth on October 13th. Pre-order that shiz now.

Mo Troper Has New Music

Mo Troper has been on our radar for some time, and we’re glad that he’s already prepping a brand new LP for us to devour. Honestly, I’m stuck with this track, and for some reason it has everything to do with the horns; I guess I’ve been stuck in a Beulah rut lately. Still, those that enjoyed the last effort from Mo might find a little bit more of a pop-centric focus here…moving away, however fleeting that may be, from the garage-ish influences. I loved that stuff, but this just sounds like there’s not a peer around…Mo has the floor now ladies and gentleman. Look for Exposure and Response via Good Cheer Records on November 17th.

Feel Good Pop from Monogold

Monogold have graced our pages many a time before, and now that there’s this light-hearted new tune floating out there, seems like the perfect time to reacquaint ourselves with the group. This tune has this steady groove working through the middle of it, leaving plenty of room for the vocals to take on their airy quality as the bounce on the top of the mix. Perhaps most interesting to me is how the band seemed to casually insert energy into this song, which definitely is a highlight to Tuesday’s listening. The Brooklyn group will release their new record, Babyfood, will be released by Chill Mega Chill Records on September 29th.

Show Pics: The Church with Helio Sequence @ 3ten (9/19)

Nostalgia acts are difficult. Ticket prices are usually higher, merch is prominent, meet and greets are “a thing” and expectations can be low. I have had several great experiences lately with bands I loved years ago coming in and performing at an insanely high level including two recent shows at 3ten with The Fixx and Midge Ure.

The Church, more to the point Steve Kilbey and a slowly evolving support band, last came through Austin for SxSW. I was always overlapped and didn’t have the chance to catch them along the way. When I saw the announcement for The Church to headline a show at 3ten, my interest level was sufficient to go on radar. When I saw the announcement that The Helio Sequence would open, I was locked in as they are one of my favorite things.

It was a good show, but not without issues. That is what we call a teaser. Click through for notes and all the pics.

We here at ATH are now counting down the weeks to yet another party time at Austin City Limits Festival. New Single from FRAME

I love the way this new FRAME song just trickles its way along. First vocals, then drum beat, little bit of energy and then guitar lines…all carrying the song forward. Eventually, the space behind it all is filled with synth accents, more detailed drum work…all adding layers to the wonderful vocals of Caitlin Frame. It’s great when you can feel the movement of a song without some over-produced beat pounding the concept into your head. This is just more solid work, which should encourage you to keep an eye out for State of Mind, which will drop on October 27th via Concierge Records.
