Helena Deland Shares Pale Video

Unless you’ve been hiding in a whole the last few months, or maybe the last few years, you’re likely aware that the forthcoming Helena Deland is highly anticipated. I’ve been on board, but what I’m pleasantly surprised by on this one is the diversity when thrown in contrast to the other singles from the album cycle. This one seems to have peeled back the banana peel of dream pop, revealing a more playful, almost childlike, Deland, providing more of an immediate impact to the listener as opposed to stretching those melodies out. Don’t get me wrong, there are still a few bits of that ethereal pop stretch, but I think its a nice move to step away and give us a glimpse at a little something different. As if my needs mattered here. Someone New is out next Friday via Luminelle.

Cheekface Cover Rosie Tucker’s Lauren

I’ve admitted my adoration for Rosie Tucker‘s hit LP Never Not Never Not Never Not, and one of my favorite tracks on the record “Lauren” is getting the cover treatment from fellow Angeleno outfit Cheekface. They keep the core of the song’s infectious pop chorus, but they ramp up the rock side during the verses, giving a touch more punch. The vocal combination in the chorus does a great job of adding in that added layer of melody that pop fans crave. Plus, it gives me another reason to write about a Rosie Tucker jam, and I rarely shy away from that…thus why you can also stream the OG version below.

Bright Indie Pop From Duncan Fellows

Bring from our fair city, we have always followed and taken a liking to the musical stylings of our very own Duncan Fellows. Over the years, the guys have dropped countless catchy singles and put on numerous memorable shows for the ATX community. Now well into their career and ever growing as artists, the band will be releasing new album The Sadlands on October 16th on all platforms. Prior to that date next week, I recommend you check out this new single called “Like I Used To” which yet again shows a band in stages of maturity and growth like we’ve never seen. What may trick you into thinking it’s just a regular ‘ol indie rock tune can suddenly explode into these lush moments of brightness and warmth. It’s a truly fantastic tune.

King Creosote Returns with Two New Tracks

Kenny Anderson, aka King Creosote, is one of those artists I always feel like is a secret I don’t want to share with others; there’s something really personal about my experience listening to his work. But, for the last few years, he’s been rather quiet, almost five years…until today. We’ve got two new tracks for you today, courtesy of Domino Record Co, and interestingly, they’re offering two vastly different versions of sound. On one hand, we get “Susie Mullen” offering this sort of proto-pop, not too far off from where acts like Peel Dream Magazine or Stereolab; its filled with textures spinning around an intoxicating melody. Turn the page over to “Walter de la Nightmare” and you receive the intimate version of Anderson’s writing, which, admittedly, is the first sound that brought me to worship at the altar of King Creosote. Both joyous tunes that I hope will encourage you to dig into his catalog; at the very least, grab these new tunes on November 27th on the new 7″.

K. Campbell Shares Every Little Thing

We’ve gotta rep the Texas scene, even beyond Austin, so when I heard this new track from K. Campbell drop the other day, I knew I had to share it with you immediately. It’s solid piece of power pop, falling somewhere between the landscape of Nada Surf and Teenage Fanclub, which doesn’t seem a bad place to find yourself. Soft melodic vocals glue the track together nicely, and the noisier bits get sanded along the edges, really polishing off the pop sensibility in the perfect way. If this is your style, as it should be, there’s a wonderful 7″ that features this track available HERE.

Fixtures Drop Video for Five Ft One Six Ft Ten

Some labels are always going to find you the good stuff, and I don’t ever mind turning to Bobo Integral for that good good. The latest signing from the label is Brooklyn based Fixtures, who dropped this rad new track last Friday as we were singing off for the weekend. Immediately the song rushes in with this bounding pace and hook-laden rhythm section; the vocals carry this post-punk swaggering croon. They throw in a nice little ramshackle jam in the midst of the tune, bringing in this little stylistic flare that gives a nice little mixture of sounds to the track. You’re going to want to keep an eye on this band; their new Weak Automatic EP drops on December 3rd!

Birdspotter Drop Gusty Album

I’m not going to lie, today’s going to be a weird day for me; I’m returning to my classroom to teach with students for the first time in over 7 months. So, I needed something calming to get me started this morning as I prepped mentally, which is why this new record from Philly’s Birdspotter is perfect. The entire listen is filled with these subtle little bedroom pop tunes, little pop earworms that creep into your brain and make everything else irrelevant. At times, the tunes are quiet and intimate, other times you get what I’ve chosen for you below, just the slightest uptick in energy as the guitar lines weave in and out of your speakers. Happy Monday to us all, right? The Gusty LP is available via Z Tapes!

Dummy Announce EP2

Dummy burst onto the scene this year with a brilliant EP that culled a bunch of influences from indiepop, noise, shoe gaze and more…it was an exploratory collection of great pop references. Today they’ve announced EP2, their second release this year; this opening single is a doozy! It’s got that sort of blend of kraut and pop driving rhythms, sort of that feeling of a train barreling down the tracks with a smile on the conductor’s face. There’s a slight vocal that courses through, acting as the song’s gravitational pull holding all the pieces together…even bringing in some textured backing vocals too. At first, I thought they were going to ride out the track in peppy fashion…but please, just stay focused for the entirety of the song…you’ll thank me when you get there! How does a brand new band get this good so fast? Well, we’ll find out just how good when EP2 drops November 6th.

The Proctors Release New LP, Summer Lane

Well, perhaps Summer Lane isn’t the brand new album from the Proctors, but it’s the long lost record that we deserved…we just never got the chance…until now. The majority of these tunes were written between 1993-1997, with Sunday Records being so kind as to finally bring these songs to light. I love the forlorn guitar sounds on “Distant Echoes,” matched with that longing in the vocals. “Moon Song” has a great performance from Christina Priest (and maybe some opening drum work familiar to Oasis fans). And don’t get stuck on the mellow pop you say? Then turn on the upbeat jangling rocker, “Shooting Star,” full of delightful dual vocals. Or maybe the dreamy guitars circling on “Not So Far Away” are more your style. All this to say that Summer Lane is needed in your life today, and thanks to Sunday Records, you can get your hands on it!

Awesome Austin Friday w/ Stiletto Feels, Velcrowolf and Zoltars
