Remington Super 60 Share I Won’t Change My Mind

Remington Super 60 will be releasing a new album in February of next year, and while it deals with the breakup of core members of the group, this song shows they’re still able to work together to build something incredible. Christopher’s production here is sublime; it almost is so strong that it feels like its completely hidden behind Elisabeth’s voice. That doesn’t mean its not a valuable bit, just means that he knows his role at times is to build the pop scaffolding so that she can climb to the pop pinnacle. And does she ever; there’s such warmth, such timelessness; I hope it plays on forever. Look for the new EP next year courtesy of Cafe Superstar Recordings.

Top Austin Hits from 2020

Seeing as we’re based in Austin, born and raise and what not, we feel a special affinity for our music scene, which has been hit really hard this year. But, let’s celebrate the music that came out, despite the difficulties we all faced. So, here’s our Top Releases from the ATX scene. And still staying away from numbering things, as this feels like telling one friend you like them more than your other friend…and I’m just excited all these great artists live nearby and were able to put their art into the world in this shit year.

New Music from Lydia Daher & Ubertrager

The last few years have shown us that one of the great indie powerhouses in the world is Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten; the label has released great hits, most recently with the Love, Burns single I’ve raved about on these very pages. Today, in my hopes to anger all Anglophiles, I bring you the label’s latest, Lydia Daher & Ubertrager. Lydia is a well-known lyricist/artist, so she’s joined up with Ubertrager to complete a mini album titled Penetrante Realitat. Aside from the imagery on this tune, the musical element is pretty captivating throughout this title track; its subtle and relaxed, combining little elements of European indiepop with atmospherics flourishes that build this elegant texture. The full release makes its way into your hands this Friday!

Mystery Guest Share A Joke

We return to our almost daily coverage of Aussie outfits, by looking over at Mystery Guest, who released a wonderful debut in Octagon City; they’re here now with a brand new single to wrap up 2020. The duo is known for making ‘club music for the chill pop crowd,’ and its clear that Caitlyn’s voice has the ability to force you to fall in love with a tune; I love her move in this tune of dragging and playing with pronunciation of syllables, particularly when its riding the melodic wave of the tune. It all works over a driving organ/piano and a percussive element that does its best to steer clear of the track. If you haven’t visited this band yet, then perhaps this is a great place to start!

Lisasinson Share Cancion Para Mi Crush

At the very beginning of this year, Spanish outfit Lisasinson released “Atasco;” its been one of my favorite singles of the year, period. They return now with another single, just as infectious as the first one, which is part of their new single for Elefant Records. It starts with a ringing guitar steadily making its way through your speakers. Suddenly it drops in and the song takes off with more energy; the video version matches that exuberance by showing the group at their playful best together, showing us just a little bit of the joy still left out in the world. Don’t be turned away by the Spanish lyrics; you’ll miss out on a total pop rock ripper you need in your life!

Julmat Share Next Xmas

Earlier this week we dropped the latest tune from Melby, but now we’ve got Matilda lending her dazzling voice to a track written by fellow labelmate, Julia Rakel (who we’ve raved about before too!); they are working together under the name Julmat. They’ve written a holiday tune of sorts, though its more about getting rid of 2020 and just speeding ahead to the Christmas of 2021, where we hope we can celebrate a holiday appropriately. More or less, this pop gem is a 2020 beat down track, disguised as a holiday tune, but it’s done so beautifully, well, I just had to get it up for you all to hear!

So, lists are pretty arbitrary, especially for a site like ours, where you mostly know what you’re going to get each day. But, still, I always fall for the “Best Of” lists, though this year, I’m personally staying away from the numbering system; it just doesn’t really mean much to me these days. That said, I do spend a lot of time covering Aussie acts, more than most, so for me, its fun to revisit my favorites. Without further hoopla…here’s my Top Aussie Releases of 2020.

Nightshift Announce New Album, Zoe

Glasgow’s always been a hot bed for the shapes that came after punk, and Nightshift is certainly no exception. After releasing their debut earlier this year, the band have signed on to release their follow-up, Zoe, with our favorite Trouble in Mind Records. You’re not going to find the group throwing out dancing rhythm sections or fast paced riffs, and in fact, its the absence of such moments that makes this single so intriguing. The song seems to slither, swirling through your inner ear as Eothen Stearn leads us through this intoxicating seance…occasionally throwing out a slight little pop bone with just a faint melody hanging in the air. If you dig, its out February 26th!

Melby Share Common Sense Single

Ever since the release of None of This Makes Me Worry, Swedish group Melby have really started to grow and experiment, and I think that’s paying off huge dividends for us as listeners. Their latest single has this sort of prog pop explorative adventure that serves as the prelude to the song’s core; even as a prelude, it builds tension as it awaits the entrance of Matilda Wiezell; she gives this bright roar that would easily fit in any number of modern psychedelic acts, though she accomplishes it with just a faint nod to pop crooning…and its spun to a stunning effect. Keep an eye on this outfit as they grow towards their sophomore release!

Henrik Appel Shares Mrs. Spaceman

I don’t know what it is about Henrik Appel that makes me swoon, but there’s something in his songwriting that just hits that emotional note I can’t pull away from. This song’s mostly all about his vocals and the strum of his guitar; it almost has this odd Bolan-esque quality to it. You ever just love a song and you can’t put it into words why or how, you just want to play it all day long? That’s been my experience with this new track from Henrik; you’ll find it on his new LP, Humanity, out January 8th via PNKSLM.
