Finnish Shoegaze from The Here Todays

If you follow our site, or pop in a time or two, you might be aware of my affinity for Finnish tunes, mostly due to my friend Nick over at Soliti. Keeping an eye on that scene, I came across The Here Todays, who’ve just released this stellar new single for you fans of the modern shoegaze. Everything about this song just feels heavy, like the weight of the world crushing you, or in my case, a 3 year old sitting on your chest; the drums are pounding, smashing the sonic walls while your hit with wave after wave of heavy distortion from the guitars. It’s meant to disorient you, until the hauntingly soft vocal notes come and tie you to this Earth, tethering you to wade through the perfect balance of noisy ambiance and cool melody. Enjoy.

Robert Sotelo Returns with Influencer

Hopefully this is the year that Robert Sotelo‘s work really registers with those who spend time with his new album, Celebrant. Musically, he’s dwelling in this sort of constructionist pop realm, carefully stacking layers of synths atop one another, leaving enough space for the song to breathe so he can drape his lyrics atop. At times, his voice takes on a slight coldness, almost robotic in nature, however, he’s still quick to turn it into this celebratory melody that will make your heart flutter. The song’s both futuristic and steeped in nostalgic art pop, so dip your toes in the fine waters of Sotelo’s craft. Celebrant is out November 12th via Upset the Rhythm.

Bright New Tune From Lentamente

We were first introduced to Costa Rican Ario Rojas and his musical known as Lentamente right around this time last year with the release of his debut LP Galeria de Espejos Paralelos on Z Tapes. Now a year later, Rojas continues to pump out new material every few months or so and continues to impress with his bedroom/dream indie pop approach to songwriting. His latest, “Panorama in 3D”, evokes many of those same super dreamy, bright and playful feelings from some of his earlier work, but also shows a musician who has learned to really tighten up production and mature into his craft. It’s a lovely piece of songwriting.

Still Corners Share Heavy Days

After dropping The Last Exit this past January, Still Corners return with a reminder of their dreamier side on the new single “Heavy Days.” Synth lines dance in and out of the verses, propelling the song along with the rhythm section pushing forward. Guitars are mostly absent here, though they appear in expansive form in between the verses, serving as a great link between this tune and their last LP. The song’s lyrics serve as a wonderful reminder for all of us to “turn it off to stay sane,” which is as solid a motto as there can be for those of us hooked on our socials. So, listen to the song, then turn it off!

David Christian and the Pinecone Orchestra Share Single

Avowed Comet Gain fans (like me) will always clamor for more whenever something from David Christian pops up out there, so I was super stoked to hear that David’s turned his solo writing into a proper release with assistance from the Pinecone Orchestra. Personally, this first single is precisely the sort of lyrical wordplay that made me fall in love with Comet Gain in the late 90s, and I’m marveling at the clarity in the mix here, which really allows for the craft to shine. You get sweeping slide guitar, tinkering piano and powerful backing vocals, all of it giving off a very settled poetic vibe. For Those We Met on the Way looks set to come out via Tapete Records in November of this year.

Good Morning Share Burning

I don’t remember the first time I wrote about Good Morning, but suffice to say, its been quite awhile. Over the years, they’ve gradually grown in both confidence and styles, and this new record of theirs seems to show some maturity in songwriting that might not have been expected. This track’s got a steady pop ballad vibe through it, bouncing on the back of a bounding piano line, though I think they tether themselves to their past with a little bit of heavy guitar distortion in-between verses. They’re still a little distinctive inflection in syllable delivery, such as the line “when I was a child/going out for the night” that just gets me; its a slight moment, but those little nuances that grab my ears. Barnyard is out on October 22nd (that day is packed with jams!) via Polyvinyl.

Fresh Music from The Reds, Pinks and Purples

Having already released one of my favorite records of the year, Uncommon Weather, it seems the songwriting spirit has spurned Glenn Donaldson into churning out even more new music (thank you spirits!). Just yesterday, Glenn’s project The Reds, Pinks and Purples just tossed up two brand new tracks, and it feels like these are already 7″ ready! I love the contrast between Donaldson’s voice and the quick drumming on “Did You Put Your Song Up Today?”. But, if I’m picking a favorite, and I get to, it’s “Waiting on a Ghost to Haunt You,” which has this unique vocal delivery where Glenn’s voice seems to rise, and almost take a stumbling breath at the end of a syllable, almost like a hiccup or a dreamy pop version of Buddy Holly. Whatever. This stuff rules. Listen now!

The EXBATS Announce Now Where Were We

The EXBATS are a dream for any father/daughter rock n’ roller; the band is made up of Kenny McClain and his daughter Inez, rounded out with Bobby Carlson on bass. But, I have no talent, musically, so my daughter is out of luck. Regardless, the EXBATS have just announced a new album for Goner Records, and dammit if you’re not going to fall for it in the biggest way. On the surface, you do get that sort of classic 60s sugar-pop, but beneath that, there are hints at sort of early 80s punk (thinking Blondie here), not to mention the jangles that swept overseas from Flying Nun; its a huge sound, no doubt aided by recording with Matt Rendon of the Resonars. Now Where Were We will be out on October 22nd!

Dinner Shares New Track, Anima

Fuck me, I did not expect to be so excited about the forthcoming Dinner album. I like Anders Rhedin’s work, but its felt like a unique time and place listening affair…that is until his new stuff. Having already gotten under my skin with “Midnight in My Head,” he seems to have furthered my dedication by channeling the musical landscape that’s near and dear to my heart. I mean, is it just me, but does it not sound like a lounge crooner pulling off a wonderful cover of Peel Dream Magazine? There’s that driving rhythm, those heavy jangles and dreamy vocals, all sort of maneuvering in this sort of proto-psychedelia, and its absolutely captivating. Dream Work is shaping up quite nicely! It’s out on October 22nd via Captured Tracks.

Cindy Share Party Store Video

You should immediately stop what you’re doing, take a deep breath, and just spend two minutes of your day fully invested in this new Cindy video. The band are on the verge of dropping 1:2 LP, and like everything coming out of San Francisco in the last year, its jumping to the top of my listening rotation. The buzz of the synthesizer really connects for me somehow; it almost feels like a separate guitar line that’s sort of feeding back behind Karina’s softened delivery. Personally, the band just has this knack for creating these songs that are emotionally moving, yet feel steadied, almost stationary, in their presentation. The fact that this isn’t one of the biggest bands out there right now means we’re all covering the wrong stuff. The LP will be out on October 1st via Mt. St. Mtn., with a vinyl version coming in November.
