Mild Mild Country Announces Never Had a Touch to Lose

Over the years we’ve spent a lot of time getting to know the musical work of Jake Ward, 1/2 of ATH Faves Eureka California; today he’s operating solo under the name Mild Mild Country, and he’s about to release Never Had a Touch to Lose. Our first listen from the new album is “Snake War,” thus is should make sense that the song’s predominantly based on the snake-like weaving of dense synth landscapes crafted by Ward in his home studio. The natural serpentine movement almost feels like Jake’s exploring the world through synths, feeling things out with his forked tongue before switching directions and coming back for more; it’s 13 minutes of great synth pop finding its way into the world. Perhaps it will find its way into your lap on October 22nd when the album drops via HHBTM.

Chime School Announce Debut Album

This site has paid tribute to the work of Andy Pastalaniec with his work in various projects from Cruel Summer to Seablite, but now Andy’s earning his own stripes with his project, Chime School. This last week Slumberland announced they’d be working with Andy on his debut LP, which at this point, sounds like a fun-filled collection of indiepop ditties. There’s plenty of jangling going on in this lead single, though I’ll admit that the vocals actually feel like they might fit right into a 90s alternative pop playlist; there’s just something about the nostalgic warmth there that sets Chime School outside the modern fare…I love the clarity in those notes for sure. I mean, it’s a band from San Francisco, which is so hot right now, musically speaking. It’s also a band on Slumberland, so you get reliability. And, the tune rules, so pre-order the eponymous debut!

The Catenary Wires Share Always On My Mind

In case you missed our announcement last week that we’ll be helping put out the Swansea Sound cassette, you now have another reason to celebrate the music of Rob Pursey and Amelia Fletcher, but this time with their other project, The Catenary Wires. They recently released Birling Gap, and this song is one the surefire hits, so they’ve given it the video treatment to coincide with some UK tour dates. Clearly, anyone that listens will swoon over the interplay between Rob and Amelia, particularly as you watch the joy Rob has in singing these tunes. But, lets take a moment to shout out the backing vocals from Fay, Ian and Andy; they kind of roll across this tune with a huge wall of sound, splashing the song with this heavy harmony that would make Brian Wilson jealous. Dummy Share Final Weapon Video

I think my favorite thing this year is going to be reading all the glowing Dummy reviews and see exactly where people name drop an influence here or there. I’m sure they’re likely to get some ESG, some Stereolab, maybe even some Peel Dream Magazine (if you’re going more recent), but I really wanna see what everyone drops; I need new stuff to listen to; I’m not trying to be a jerk. I honestly don’t even think it matters, as the band seem to kind of operate like some mad lunch lady, stirring a pot of everything left in the kitchen pantry and churning out something incredible. This latest single flirts with these propulsive notes that kind of seem dance-floor ready, yet there’s this layer of left-field psychedelic experimentation that kind of holds everything in one unique spot…all the while, the vocals here feel like they’re trying to bewitch me, seducing me with this calm amidst these vibrant sounds. That’s the wonderful thing about the band, they seem to be kind of formulating their sound as they go, so it constantly seems to evolve, and that bodes well for all of Mandatory Enjoyment, out October 22 via Trouble in Mind.

Crabber Share Katherine/Waves

This November, all those folks that pine for Sarah Records 7″ on Discogs (like myself) will certainly find themselves being absolutely charmed by the sophomore album from Germany’s Crabber. Honestly, listening through this new single, one thing sticks out in my mind; the song sounds a lot like Comet Gain, except its just a pure pop version there, getting rid of some of the lo-fi effects in order to bring out more from the melody in these lines. I’m not sure how someone doesn’t listen to the soft crystalline guitars and just fall to pieces at how glorious they sound dancing down your ear canal. Their album drops via Jigsaw in November!

Cowgirl Share Something I Needed to Do

The last few years have seen a bunch of one-off singles from York’s Cowgirl, and the band are finally ready for their debut LP, coming your way in the near future via Safe Suburban Home Records. If you ask me, and perhaps this is sacrilege, but just imagine you were a big fan of Wilco, but then you think they needed something with more punch and panache…that might be a good way to describe what’s happening here. There’s steady ballad writing, with nice melodic moments lurking throughout the track. Then you land upon the chorus and the riffs get fuzzy and things start to rule!

Well, today might be the beginning of a little decline for the next few weeks, as you’re likely going to be pressing play on this just as I’m bringing Nathan Jr. Jr. into the world. But, like him, you are blessed with these incredible tunes that graced our site last week, all of which will enable you to recover from your Labor Day doldrums. One More Nightwatchers SIngle

Here’s the deal friends. If you have yet to check out the French post-punk outfit Nightwatchers, well we maybe just shouldn’t be friends anymore. The band has powered through a raucous 2019 debut La paix ou le sable, and now have their sophomore effort, Common Crusades, coming out on October 8th via Lovely Records. Prior to that release date, the band is treating us to one more single with this new one called “Their Turn Trying to Rule the World”. This comes after the stunning tunes “1905 & The Muslim Exception” and “White Fathers”. The straight of it is, you’re going to want to pick up this record.

Doms Drop Model Head

Don’t have too much info on Arizona’s Doms, and in fact, the band only have a handful of jams, but felt like being into some rock vibes today, so thought we would throw this one your way here. This is just straight rock fuel, akin to the middle period Ty Segall, where it was all about noise and energy and pummeling and hints of melody. Feel like the band have latched onto this darkened edge of heavy indie rock that we’ve perhaps been missing, so I’m ready to turn this one all the way up. You game?

The Stick Figures Release Archeology

It’s always interesting to me when you get a reissue, and you’re likely, “damn, you sure this isn’t just the latest hits?” Floating Mill Records have announced Archeology, a compilation of sorts compiling work from Tampa’s The Stick Figures. Honestly, how has the world not clamored for this before; it sounds exactly like something you’d expect from Love Is All or Life Without Buildings, only way before their time. Rachel Evergreen’s voice sounds incredible behind those squalling guitars and driving rhythms, and frankly I can’t get it out of my head at all; there’s something in so passionate about the delivery it’s hard to imagine this band not being something incredibly huge. Perhaps this will put the group on your radar a bit. Archeology is out now via Floating Mill.
