I Was a King Release Lo Pressure

Some bands don’t age well, but for my money, I Was a King seem to be aging like the finest of wines; I feel like everything from the forthcoming Follow Me Home has been nothing short of endearing, with every note hitting just the right chord. This brand new single doesn’t waste any time, hitting things right away with this vocal that seems hurried to maximize the melodic nature. Once things settle in, it’s a steady trip around handclaps and the perfect strum, with the vocal urgency always intact. I feel like this song could be the one I play again and again for the duration of this year. Follow Me Home is out on October 7th, and it looks like we’ll all have to get the physical copy on Discogs…as both versions are sold out! Hear why below!

Hunting Cover Sparklehorse’s Piano Fire Single

Mark Linkous would have been 60 this last Friday, which was the day Hunting decided would be the perfect day to release this glorious cover of “Piano Fire.” Typically, I stay away from covers, but I very specifically picking up It’s a Wonderful Life back in college upon the recommendation of a friend, and I, too, found myself in love with Linkous songwriting. The band also chose to announce that they’ve got a new LP of their own titled You’ve Got Love coming your way this November, so keep your eyes peeled for that. Just a nice reminder of great songwriting, and a pretty spot on cover!

Last Week’s Jams, Today (9.6 – 9.9)

Last week came and went in a flash, but there were definitely a few hits we wanted to remind you about that were on our radar. Two relatively unknown acts on our radar finally dropped their LPs, so be sure to listen to the hits from Pet Owner and Tin-ear. I was fortunate to see a sneak Voxtrot warm-up set before they head out on the road for a quick reunion tour, so made sure I included a jam in there. Plus, you’ve got new stuff from Winter and the Smashing Times, so there’s just 14 quick hits for you to digest this morning.

Voxtrot Return @ Arts and Crafts (9.8.22)

Austin band Voxtrot has come out of their 12 year hiatus to return with a few reissues, and a slew of dates to celebrate those releases. Well, like all great bands, you’ve got to get your legs back under you, so the band quietly played a warm-up set out in Lockhart last night, and I was fortunate enough to be on hand.

Watching the band take the stage again, not to mention the smiles on their faces as the crowd sang back to them was a perfect moment etched in time. Special shout out to Jennifer Moor (Deep Time) who sang backup vocals throughout the night. The band represented a time in Austin’s music scene when there was so much promise and joy, and it was great to revisit that snapshot…and hope their return signals a similar wash over the city.

I poorly shot a few videos, and cuz I do what I wants, I included them below. And here’s the setlist too, in case you want to know what you might catch on their tour:

Introduction
Raised by Wolves
Kid Gloves
Berlin Without Return
Your Biggest Fan
Long Haul
Soft & Warm
Mothers, Sisters, Daughters & Wives
Whiskey & Water
Warmest Part of the Winter
The Start of Something
Wrecking Force

Stream Pet Owner’s Natural Behavior

I’ve spent the last few months encouraging you to spend some time with Switzerland’s Pet Owner, and now, you can stream the project’s new album, Natural Behaviour in its entirety. We’ve previously covered tracks “Hi-Res” and “Helping Hand,” but rest assured you can dive into all sorts of vibes; I know I’ve been gravitating towards “Soft Body” on my listens, but the slow build of “Sugar Rush” isn’t a bad route to travel either. Take a little bit of time out of your day right now, kick back and enjoy the craft of Lea Mathis and her Pet Owner project.

Smut Shares After Silver Leaves

Been a bit of a slower week for me on the music side of things, but as we near the end, I had to share this new single called “After Silver Leaves” from Chicago based outfit Smut. It definitely has some clear 90s rock inspiration, but also with hints of dreamy pop and an overall brightness to it. You’ll find that it progresses incredibly well over the 5 minute length with a slow build and rise near the end. Great tune.

Smut will release new album How the Light Felt on November 11th via Bayonet Records.

Spirit Ghost Release No Future Single

Austin’s Spirit Ghost have been banging around town for nearly a good while now, and with their new single, it seems the perfect way to (hopefully) move into the Fall. The guitars are hanging on the cusp of power pop and surf rock, with the steady thump from the rhythm section offering up the perfect driving vibe. Despite the poppy tendency bubbling up, the song deals with human frustration and running on the proverbial hamster wheel of life, working hard and never really going anywhere. A nice little mixture of gloom and fun, wrapped up into a song that hope has you tapping your toes a bit.

Broken Baby Drop Make Manager Video

Sometimes you just need a straight rock tune to clear the cobwebs in your brain, something to clean the stress out. Well, if you’re in that boat, turn up this new track and video from Broken Baby; it’s a song that will draw some comparisons to Amyl/Sniffers, particularly in the way the vocals have that biting sharpness that seems to warn the listener to back up…though you could also hear it being a riotous performance in the live setting. Speaking of that live setting, the band have a nice little mini tour going on this week and next with our own ATX friends in Calliope Musicals, coming to Austin on the 16th.

Nervous Twitch Drop History of the Wild West

ATH faces Nervous Twitch are back with a brand new jam that’s filled with the type of sugary hooks that will have you pressing repeat as soon as the tune fades out. But, like many a tasty pop morsel, this song lyrically takes on the subject of escapism, leaving the stresses of daily life behind in search of something brand new. The group bring their ideas to the surface hidden behind these heavy riffs that bring in just the right amount of punch, with the chorus sure to please with its bratty sense of fun. This hit features on the group’s new record, Some People Never Change, which drops on October 14th via Reckless Yes.

New Single & Interview From Julie Odell

When we pump out all this new music, it’s also often fun to get a little perspective from the individuals who actually make this music to hopefully give you some insight into your favorite artists. Today I am straight amped to share with you the new single “Envelope” from New Orleans based artist Julie Odell along with some short interview questions. This new single is from Odell’s upcoming album Autumn Eve due out on September 30th via Frenchkiss Records. Hit the jump for the single and interview from Julie Odell.
