Calvary Is From Liverpool

Sometimes you just need some solid UK based Indie Rock.

For fans of: Elbow, The National

Cavalry is a band from Liverpool that takes in a ton of what I like about a well-crafted indie tune. They have an EP out today available to preview in the streaming world to listen to, use this thing called a hyperlink, via Fierce Panda called See The Night Perform. The EP was produced by Darren Jones how previously worked with The Last Shadow Puppets and you can pick that out in this track called “Heresy”.

Post Punk Pop Jam Out Of Tel Aviv From Document

According to the band profile, Document is a post punk band out of Tel Aviv, hence the title. But upon first listen, I got tinges pop jammy fun lying just beneath the surface. I like these kinds of fusion. I also like highlighting music that is being created all over the place, an ATH specialty (I think we all may need to move to Australia or Scandinavia soon based on our current penchant for jams/electronics from both locales).

Back to Document, they are self-releasing an LP on 12/8 called The Void Repeats, as independent as it gets, which you can stream here. Preview the opening track track below…

Show Pics: Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile @ ACL Live (11/11)

We have a little bonus show coverage today.

While I was eating tacos and getting melt-faced over at Emo’s, we had an opportunity to send in a photographer to take in the magic of Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile performing at ACL Live. I was a little bummed to miss this one, but my priority was with the Sound On Sound team. I was supposed to be out standing in the field, after all.

Sound On Sound: Japandroids @ Emo’s (11/11)

The other Sound on Sound makeup show we ventured out for was to catch Japandroids and Cloud Nothings at Emo’s.

We interviewed Cloud Nothings several years back during Fun Fun Fun Fest, six whole years back, and several albums ago. They were a highlight, winning best drummer award, as I recall.

I last saw Japandroids open for Iggy Pop. That was pretty nuts. They even knew they were speed-bump on the way to the spectacle.

Sound On Sound: Lindstrom @ Cheer Up (11/10)

We all shed a tear when we learned that Sound On Sound was cancelled. We have a lot of good friends that put so much effort into making this year’s festival amazing, a quantum leap over last year.nnWe will not debate the valor of their efforts to save the festival or lament the missed opportunity of seeing Iggy Pop surrounded by a Ren Fair here.

The thing we may not understand about the festival circuit is that bands are on tour and need to use the festivals to home base around a few stops nearby before and after. Knowing this, the SoS team was able to schedule a few makeup shows to accommodate the travelers. One such show was for Lindstrom, a guy from Norway that was travelling a long way to hang with us. This set was high on my list for standing in a field with friends vibing. We replace the open spaces and axe-throwing for the friendly confines of Cheer Up Charlie’s.

Have a Nice Weekend With Lou Rebecca and Night Drive

It has been a pretty good week of electronic jams. From the new Fever Ray today to Bayonne’s latest to the Korine track. All solid offerings. Maybe you should just resolve to shimmy all weekend with this cooler weather. It is finally fall. LCD Soundsystem out at COTA seems a good way to spend Halloween. I am hoping my skwuad can rock our onesies. If you see a platypus, perhaps with a camera, say hi.

I will leave everyone with one last bit of electro-pop goodness. It is from French-born, part-time local Lou Rebecca, who with Josh Mills on programming and keys, has been turning out wonderfully crafted French disco. Holodeck picked up the pending release and we now have a full shimmy-inducing slice of heaven following the more thoughtfully subdued and bilingual lead single from the S/T EP.

It is ACL again. I am going sans long lens and will be actually listening to bands with Nathan and an entire squad of randoms that come in town from round this great country. Get of my blanket, football in the beer tent, occasional runs to the front of the crowd to get sweaty and be dumb – festival things. We do get Day Wave.

On to a shareable jam. Here is a lovingly crafted piece of synth pop by Empathy Test that has that darker vibe followed by that last-song-on-the-Depeche-Mode-record that had just a slightly uplifting message. The full length, Safe From Harm, is due November 17th.

The Final round from the photo pit, but first a love letter…

Hopefully, you know the feeling you get when you are on a good team, when all types of different people come together and get things done. Now, my fellow Austin music photographers weren’t shooting for the same outlet. In fact, we mostly compete for your views, but the reality is that each in the group takes care of the other. Whether it is an extra water, pepto tabs, pickle run or a spare memory card, it makes festival life awesome. Truly talented and happy to have them as colleagues and, more importantly, friends. When the Sound on Sound announcement landed, we were crushed, not just for the organizers, but also to lose that chance to just be together all doing what we love.

…and bitching about something the whole way.

ACL 2017 In Photos: Saturday – Weekend One

Time for more photos from the Great Lawn. Thanks for coming.

The Saturday edition of photos features a new local supergroup, a not local supergroup, some singers and song-writers, local heroes and super dance pop. We also pepper in some tribute time for Tom Petty. We heard plenty of Petty covers over the weekend, but the best thing was shutting down all the stages for a moment to playback his rendition of “Freefallin'” from a headlining set a few years back as skydivers jumped out of plane above the festival and floated down with sparkler boots. It was giant sing-along, lighters up.
