KBP6: Friday in Pictures

Get ready folks. This is going to be one big gallery.

Friday was the busiest day for me at Kilby Block Party. I went from gates to close, making friends, seeing new stuff, old stuff and everything in between. The shoot plan was, and order of the gallery is, as follows; Melancholy Club, Being Dead, Been Stellar, Vagabon, Hovvdy, Perfume Genius, Momma, Built to Spill, Car Seat Headrest, Slowdive Youth Lagoon and Beach House. I did go listen to a bit of Rilo Kiley from the crowd (closed photo pit). Like I said, Friday was busy, with a couple of double sets (shooting a song or two and crossing the wilds to catch a bit of another artist’s third). I got to know my fellow photographers a bit better and a few good friends joined in the fun. The rodeo stage was cool and the weather held.

I have notes and a GIANT gallery after the jump.

Kilby Block Party 6: Thursday in Pics

I traveled up to Salt Lake City to take in one of the newish festivals that seems to be doing things right, Kilby Block Party. The lineup is one of the best of the year for my tastes, by far. Previous years, KBP was only two or three days; they hit four days this go round for a stellar group of artists to accomodate touring schedules with New Order, Yo La Tengo, Future Islands and Devo featured.

Click through, I have some thoughts and plenty of photos to peruse. If you were at the rail, see if you made the crowd shots. If you weren’t there, blast you favorite tunes by each artist and pretend.

ATH Abroad: Kilby Block Party Preview

Team ATH agrees on one thing, we all love New Order‘s melding of post-punk grit with synth-driven textures that range from full on dance party to brooding goth. Kilby Block Party offers up a festival lineup that resonates with our vibes. New Order headlining on Thursday is not only a nod to their lasting influence but also a primer for the festivals exploration of jams. Here is a quick preview as we take the show on the road.

Show Pics: Hey, Nothing @ 3Ten (3/28)

After a grueling run at SXSW 2025 a couple weeks prior, a pallet cleanser was due. Ryan and I headed out on a Friday evening to catch Hey, Nothing, a two human project out of Georgia making the dream of the 90s come alive. Along with them, we got the check out Sean Solomon‘s solo project. Sean is a member of Moaning and also a talented animator. It was a younger crowd, attending BECAUSE of social media, not in spite of, and I was happy to meet a new group of live music fans talking about traveling to see shows. Rad.

More on the show and PLENTY of pics to come. Click through, fam.

About Last Night – SXSW Friday

We are still standing after a full week of tunes with one, maybe two, more days left to go amongst the craziness in Austin. The ATH crew was once again spread out all over town yesterday and into the night, so expect a huge variety of bands on our highlight’s list. Hopefully we will catch ya’ll out there today if we’ve missed you so far! Full highlights, thoughts and fancy photos from Friday can be found after the jump.

ACL WE2 Preview

Weekend one at ACL Festival 2024 had some interesting buzz, positive and negative, on the socials and elsewhere. Chappell Roan apparently runs the universe now, country music leveled up and the middle-card is dominated by tiktok. However, reports of way oversold GA+ areas, VIP wristbands having their open bars removed and more means the luster may have been worn out fully if not for those few standout performances for the Reels crowd. Even more intriguing (and despite my old man yelling at clouds routine), wristbands were in full demand, reselling at double the price well into Friday. This weekend’s ticket exchange rates are a bit more normal; just above face value is easy to get, so keep an eye out as prices drop.

One kind of cool thing, one of the stages was 100% run on renewable energy.

Now, I was not able to attend, so we dispatched our stealthy photo guy, Nick Radcliffe, to grab some pics and take in the pretty lighting to act as a preview to your WE2 revelling. I recommend hanging with me when Being Dead kick off Saturday at noon. We can watch the UT/OU game in the tent later. Heh.

ACL WE1 Preview

Hey, everybody. Time for ACL Festival to takeover Zilker. Will I see you on the lawn?

I’ll be out and about both weekends, but let’s start with general tips and tricks and some highlights for those of us attending. The festival certainly isn’t the sanctuary of indie/Austin vibe it was in the past, but the kids do dig it and we certainly have some entertaining headliners and potential drama to fill your battle card.

SXSW Friday & Saturday in Photos

Forgive the version fail. My bad.

Team ATH went out and about to catch a few more bands at the end of last week. Friday in particular had some heavy targets. Among them were to evaluate some buzz bands, visit old friends, make some new ones and take in some comfort food of ripping classics. Along the way, we took a few photos and gathered a few thoughts. We came to some universal conclusions, divided and conquered only to get back together. Thanks SXSW.

Houses of Heaven Release Within Without

Industrial synth pop from Houses of Heaven, “Within/Without” is the first single and title track from the forthcoming album. The song briefly eases in before going full on with an anchor bassline, EBM kick and synth flourishes that lead to the elevated and cathartic chorus.

Shipping at the end of April, the pre-order for the marbled-gray vinyl released via Felte Records is live over on their Bandcamp. Other tracks on the record boast guest vocals from Nitzer Ebb’s Douglas McCarthy and (former Austinite) Mariana Saldaa of BOAN. Probably gonna pre-order this one for use at vinyl nights…
