Show Pics: Ty Segall @ Mohawk (5/25)

Last Friday was a disgustingly busy night of shows. The ATH crew split time between The Mohawk and Red7.

First up for show coverage is the four band line-up at The Mohawk headlined by Ty Segall. After the recent recorded collaboration, it was only natural for White Fence to back up Ty. Along for the ride were Memphis band Useless Eaters and one of my local favorites Rayon Beach.

2012 Austin City Limits Festival Lineup

The lineup has been announced and tix will be up for sale soon. After many months of speculation and the build-up via the scratch offs, the management has let loose the list of bands that we will argue about for the next five months.

Obviously, the headliners aren’t for us. I mean, I will hang out for a little Red Hot Chili Peppers and maybe even Neil Young for a moment, but The Black Keys have jumped the shark. I am down with seeing Iggy. Other notables for me include The Afghan Whigs, Crystal Castles, Die Antwoord, The War on Drugs, Bombay Bicycle Club, Oberhofer, Polica, Stars, Black Lips, Caveman and Nikki Lane. I am sure I forgot some stuff in the list I like, but as with every festival lineup from the music obsessed point of view, we can react with meh. We’ll all still go and have fun, so start shopping for your cooler-umbrella-chair combo device. Leave a comment with your reaction and see you  on the lawn.

Full line-up here.

Update: Three day passes are gone. Single Day tix will go up once the daily schedules are announced tomorrow.

Show Pics: I Break Horses @ Stubb’s (5/18)

We certainly intended to bring coverage of the M83 show, but a PR SNAFU prevented me from shooting them. I really didn’t want to sign that release anyway; it had a really strange clause about no digital editing. Really? Images from a DIGITAL SLR and no digital editting?

Not deterred, because I really wanted to see Sweden’s I Break Horses. I love Hearts. Love it. “Winter Beats” and “Wired” have been in rotation around the house for a while now. Could the band pull it off live? Head past the break for pics of their set, a few of my favorite shots of the year so far…

Show Pics: Washed Out @ The Mohawk (5/10)

Washed Out puns ruled the night as the rain came down by the bucket load. The drainage holes in the east side wall of The Mohawk couldn’t keep up and the patio turned into a shallow pool. I have to give it up for these fans, they stayed, they got soaked to the bone and they had fun.

Dog Bite was able to avoid the weather with their opening set, while Memoryhouse had to play through the worst of it.

More on the show and a ton of pics from a different view point after the break…

Show Pics: Tennis @ The Parish (5/8)

Spaulding, get dressed you’re playing golf. – No I’m not grandpa, I’m playing tennis.

Tennis played The Parish on a Tuesday, a rainy Tuesday. The show was sold out, very sold out. There a few shows a year that bring out the part time show-goers, this was definitely one of them. It’s not a bad thing, by any means. We need them to come out so that they get hooked again and we can get better booking and venue additions/remodels. In fact, this is precisely why The Parish was reborn with its great lights and fantastic sound.

Vacationer came along and we all had a good time, well most of us. Read for notes and pics.

Show Review: Active Child @ The Mohawk (5/4)

It was way too hot for early May as The Mohawk played host to Active Child with Superhumanoids and Balam Acab opening. RayRay insisted I would be surprised by the live set. After a few beers at Easy Tiger, we wandered up Red River half-jokingly singing clips from You Are All I See. What would an Active Shild cover of “Cumbersome” sound like?

Anyway, click through. I have plenty of pics and a few more show notes…

R.I.P. Adam Yauch

This makes me sad.

From middle school kid being rebelious by listening to three white kids from New York rap about defying their parents to college student getting a groove with funk beats to grown-assed man lamenting their cancellation at ACL, The Beastie Boys have been part of my life. I imagine most of you are the same.

Psych Fest Day Three: Photos and Thoughts

It is Psych Fest Day Three. I have empty memory cards and I am well-rested. My brain is no longer trying to swell out of its cage.

What’s to do? Well, there is a little band I call Thee Oh Sees. Again, not a true fit for Psych, but who cares? They are going to put down jams. I was also excited to see the return of Dead Confederate. Can they catch the magic of their first release?

Click that box over there and read words and have photo overload.

Psych Fest Day Two: Photos and Thoughts

Day One was fun.

Day Two, however, was met with a splitting sinus headache and stories of crowded photo pits with iPhones and friends of the friends of the bands that got in as “Press”. Such is the festival atmosphere. It is like an insurance conference where normal human beings sometimes get a little nuts.

Regardless, we had a punch list and we were going to punch it. Head past the break for a few notes and plenty of pics.

Show Pics: Bon Iver ACL Taping @ Moody Theater (4/26)

Justin Vernon won a Grammy. He has left us behind.

It doesn’t mean that many of us wouldn’t jump at the chance to see Bon Iver play a set for an Austin City Limits taping, especially if we got to bring the camera. It doesn’t mean that we no longer like his early material that put him square in the blogosphere’s hype zone four or so years back. Seems like such a long time ago, before the palling around with Kanye and constant mocking at Hipster Runoff, doesn’t it.

A few thoughts on the whole affair and plenty of pics after the break…
