Curfews Drops Psalms to Strip To EP

Felt like yesterday got sort of hung up in a kind of mellowed vibe, which was perfect, matching all the tunes that I was enjoying. But, today, I wanted to kick myself in the ass a little bit, get some energy beneath me and kind of kick on into the day…thus, here I am covering the new Psalms to Strip To EP from Curfews..more specifically, the closing track “Trophy Case.” You can feel the heaviness of this tune almost instantly, with that crunchy riff driving right through your speakers. Melody is omnipresent here, though mostly in the way the vocals are done, getting a little emphatic punch when necessary; it’s just a straight ripper you’re going to rush to turn up real loud!

Pet Dreams Shares Climbing Trees

Clearly I’m into some escapism today, as the stuff I’ve got on here is definitely a little more of the pensive mood, like this new Pet Dreams tune. The band have an album coming out later in the year, and the first single is this subtle little pop number that sort of allows you to drift in and out of consciousness, daydreaming about the world and what not. You’re probably going to find some similarities to Radio Dept, just in terms of how the song unfolds and its usage of various samples, but there’s a little bit of polish here, allowing the song to sort of warm you as it steadily bounces through your speakers.

Enola Share Strange Comfort Video

Really digging on this Enola vibe at the moment, so wanted you to be in the know as I jam it out. The Naarm/Melbourne project just dropped this read single, and I love the cinematic nature of the tune, tied into the concept of the video. The song’s exposition trickles, with vocals seemingly picking up pace as cymbals are heard echoing in the dense environment, but then they fade, almost evaporating. Suddenly the action rises, with guitars stabbing and dancing into the frame; the energy picks up, honing in on the post-punk nature. Vocals come emphatically through the rest of the song, with these industrial guitar lines snaking their way through; it feels like a dreamier version of Blank Dogs. Buen proveche.

Stella Donnelly Share How Was Your Day

I love the dynamism in the way Stella Donnelly handles her vocals on all her work, but especially on this song. It begins with a matter-of-fact delivery, rushing at times, stern at other points. But, it gets peeled back for the chorus to kind of drift in angelically, hanging ever so lightly in the air while the guitar does a sweet dance behind. Then, as the song draws towards its end, Donnelly offers another tone, melodic but softened, almost like a midpoint between the spoken word and heavenly notes filtering through. Flood is out August 26th via Secretly Canadian.

Peel Dream Magazine Announces Pad

With two striking releases on Slumberland, it’s high time Peel Dream Magazine go for the trifecta, and it looks like that’s on the agenda, as the band today announce Pad. That said, those looking for a repeat of early successes will find the sound’s pushing in an entirely different direction. There’s still that faint hint of a synthetic backbone, though it hangs as more of a backdrop on this first single. In exchange, we get something that feels a little bit like our own frolic in a world created by the artist; in a sense, it feels like an adventurous take on a symphony, adding a bit of playfulness to the art. Definitely will be interesting to hear how the rest of the effort shapes up; Pad drops via Slumberland/Tough Love on October 7th.

Notbrian Drops The No

Brian Desousa, aka Notbrian, just dropped The No EP, and it’s the perfect vibe to open up your Wednesday morning. His EP has this sort of tropical beach vibe, though channeled through a bit of a lo-fi pop lens; I think there’s certainly a bit of relaxation that soaks into your skin if you sit back and let the vibes wash over you. The tune below’s the EP closer, and it perfectly allows you to sort of ride off into the horizon completely free, mentally. So, sit back and take a nice deep breath in, then let yourself go.

Joyeria Announces Debut Fim EP

While we’re all clamoring (sort of) for Pavement reunion tickets, we might have taken our eyes off the prize, which in this case is Joyeria. Why the mention of Pavement? Well, if you’re not picking up on the Malkmus-ness of what’s going on here, well, then one of us clearly needs new ears! What I love though is that Joyeria seems more than willing to kind of turn things up and get loud out of nowhere, then mellow just as quickly, leaving you disoriented as you try to decipher the wordplay. After a few singles, the project is set to release a debut, the FIM EP, which drops October 14th via Speedy Wundergound.

Winter Share Atonement (ft. Hatchie)

We had a feeling that Winter had something new brewing, and today the band announces What Kind of Blue Are You, and in doing so, builds on the hype by releasing a single with Samira and Hatchie uniting on vocals. There’s a heavy groove that rides the verses, giving this darkened acid wash to the dreamy notes Winter is known to craft. You’re seduced into the semi-primal groove, burrowing deep in the song’s emotional appeal. But, then you get spit right out as the chorus erupts in this hyper-joyous explosion; it’s clearly the song’s high-point, but I think it perfectly captures the mixture of vibes we’re to expect on this brand new LP. Pretty decent way to start off the album cycle, eh? What Kind of Blue Are You is out on October 14th via Bar/None Records.

Slum Summer Drop Tenderize the Night Video

If you missed out on Slum Summer‘s 2019 masterpiece, ABABO, you missed an incredible batch of pop rock tunes that you couldn’t get out of your head. So, you should start THERE. Once you’ve done that, check out the brand new video from the group’s forthcoming record, then relish the feel good vibes your soaking up at the moment. Musically, the band are playing a heavy jangling pop rock at the moment, akin to recent stuff from Monnone Alone or the like; it’s energetic and driving, with these riffs ready to rip right through your apartment walls. Hugh Noble’s voice on the other hand, still holds a bit of that ex-Brit tone, though I’ll admit, his delivery has him channeling a bit of a more melodic J. Mascis…adding to the enjoyment factor on my behalf. You’ll even get an added kick when there’s some backing female vocals giving the hook a bit of extra depth! I love it, as you should. And, if you do, then grab be sure to keep an eye out for Living in Milk, dropping August 6th via Jigsaw Records.

True Blue Share On Track

When you hear those sharp guitar notes here, you’re going to immediately know how it hooked me, but I want you to dig a bit deeper into this tune from Germany’s True Blue. Sure, the dreamier pop element that’s in fashion is constantly bubbling to the surface, yet the vocals kind of have this more nostalgic pop nod; it feels like something that would have come out in the early 80s underground, expressing this earnestness and cool you can’t really grasp unless you’re indulging with your headphones on tight. It’s a fairly new project on our radar, so I’m hoping we get to hear a bit more over here soon!
