FTC: Sound Team

I will begin my From the Closet today by saying that you should check out the wikipedia page about Austin band Sound Team if you don’t know their history.  It’s a long story about a band that showed heaps of promise before breaking up amongst turmoil in the band and dissatisfaction with their label.  Like I said, check our their wikipedia page and read up.  Today I am bringing you a song from Sound Team’s one and only major label LP Movie Monster.  Despite what some people may say, I actually enjoyed that record when it came out and still spin it every once and awhile.  This jam “Born to Please” serves as an introduction to that LP right after a short “intro” type track.  I highly recommend picking that one up at your local record store.  Of course the former members of Sound Team are still making waves in the local scene so it’s not like all is lost for you fans of the sound.  Bill Baird and Sam Sanford currently jams in Sunset, Matt Oliver and Jordan Johns currently run TV Torso, and Will Patterson has struck out on his own as Sleep Good.  Maybe one day we can get them all back together again for a lil reunion?

Austin A2W: Paperthreat

Over the last week or so I’ve found myself giving some heavy spins to the tunes created by Austin electronic-pop group Paperthreat.  The band is fronted by veteran to the Austin music scene Rene Rodriguez who has been actively involved over the years in bands like Great Nostalgic, AM Syndicate, HumbleBums, and a few others.  After Rene tired of his previous groups, he struck out on his own and began Paperthreat with drummer and former bandmate Vincent Durcan.  The two then enlisted the help of Arius Holifield and guitar player Niko Bakulich to round out a live band.  In the short time the band has been in existence, Paperthreat have only one EP which you can download for free over their Bandcamp site.  I’ve been jamming that EP for a couple weeks now and I’ve yet to come up with a comparison I feel confident about.  That’s a good thing thought right?  Download that EP or have a listen below to their jam “Conveyor” and make your own comparison.

If you care to see the band live, head out to Beauty Bar tonight (6/30) for a a free show starting at 10pm.  Zlam Dunk will be headlining that one.

FTC: The The

From The Closet deserves a delve into a generation of music that may not be represented here on a regular basis, and that’s where I come into play. My closet might run a bit deeper than those who previously post here on this site. I’m an old fart for sure, but I might have something of worth to share with you.  Follow the jump for more.

FT5: Songs About Heading West

Summertime is vacation time. Roadtrip time. So sweaty you stick to your chair my God why don’t I live in a more temperate climate time. So where do you go at a time like this? “California! Californiaaaaaa! Here we COOOOOOOOMMMMME!” Excuse me. I believe I slipped into the theme song of the O.C. for a moment. I thought about making every track on this list “California” by Phantom Planet, but I’m fairly certain I am the only one who would think that is funny. So instead, here a legit list of songs about heading out west. Enjoy.

Show Review: The Twilight Sad @ Emos (6/11)

If ever a show served as a reminder of why aged men (such as myself) should wear headphones, then this was precisely the set of bands that would help me come back to this obvious realization.  Glasgow’s The Twilight Sad would bring their swirling sonic blast of guitar pop to Austin, and opening up was local act Calm Blue Sea. Follow the jump for the full show review and some hot photos.

FT5: Indie Rock African Americans

This is a serious subject, and one I don’t plan to take very lightly.  As I’ve attended several shows recently, even small local ones, I began to look at the racial dynamic in the Austin music scene.  Oddly, one giant sore thumb sticks out: the lack of African-American attendees at these shows.   This is probably the same way in every city across the land, and I tend to think it’s quite unfortunate.  I’m not here to debate how to solve the problem, if you deem this a problem, but rather to honor my Top Five African-American participants in the realm of indie rock.   This is just my opinion, but I immediately banned the guy from Bloc Party because he put out two bad records and continues to make bad electronica music.

Austin A2W: Hollywood Gossip

What?! New tunes?  And a new record?!  We’re really excited to bring you an update on one of Austin’s greatest little indie darlings, Hollywood Gossip.  Having been away from the scene for a short bit, the band are now returning with their debut full-length, Dear as Diamonds.  Using clever lyrics and catchy hooks, the band has won over many fans in our city, continuing to churn out pop gem after pop gem.  Their last EP, You’re So Quiet, featured sunny guitars with a touch of twang, along with steady drumming and distinct vocals from Tyler Womack (“Bicycle” was one of my favorite jams for months, and tonight).  One of our favorite things about the group is that they’re likely to always look on the brighter side of things, never getting too deep into subject matter; this all leads to great fun for the audience time and time again.  Speaking of audience, the band will be playing their CD release on June 19th at the Ghost Room.
