A Make It Through Your Afternoon Mix

Ian Orth is a busy guy these days. Spinning as one half of Learning Secrets, leading the band Orthy and putting together some sweet mixes in his spare time. Hell, he was even recently featured in Tribeza Magazine.

So, I introduce to you one of his recently shared mixes. It was for El Paso’s Late Night Social Club. There be smooth beats here and you can download it. Ian has a knack for picking the remixes that don’t suck and making them work together, so nod your head through the rest of your workday and download it for your weekend.

Anyone have a set of lungs I could borrow?

Gentle Folk from Horse’s Ha

HorsesHa_OuterjacketFeel like I need to cleanse myself from the rock n’ roll after spending my weekend at Chaos in Tejas, so this new track from Horse’s Ha is perfect.  I really love how the song opens up with the female vocals from Janet Bean atop the intricate guitar work, but then James Elkington makes his entrance, dropping a deeper vocal; the additional musical accompaniment just puts a cherry on top of it all, including the nice backing vocal. The group will be releasing their new record, Waterdown, on August 20th via Fluff and Gravy Records.

Rad Rock from The Memories

347I’ve been jamming to the Memories for a good bit of time, but this new tune is really unexpected, in a good way.  Personally, I like the humor in this track, which isn’t entirely new, yet the overall attitude of the track is much more relaxed.  Of course, I can also relate to all those girls who don’t speak Spanish; it’s a big deal for RayRay and myself.  The group’s got a new record coming out on Burger Records; it’s titled Love is the Law and it will see a release date of July 23rd.  Just another great installment in this group’s growing career.

New Music from Scraper

scraperSeeing as there’s tons of punk rock all over town due to Chaos in Tejas, I think it’s only fitting that I put up some new rock n’ roll by Scraper.  The group has just signed on to release their debut 7″ on God?, which is the baby brother of Drag City.  It’s a fast paced jam, filled with discordant guitars, shouted lyrics and an old school bravado that I’ll always appreciate.   You want to unleash some pent up aggression? You’re not going to find a better track than this tune.

Enjoy New Music by The Sweets

thesweetsIf there’s a harder working band out there, then I’d like to meet them.  The Sweets have just put out their 8th EP/Single of the last year (Some Pulp being my favorite), and these three new songs are definitely worth your time today.  At first, it seems like the band might jump off into sunny-pop, but they hold themselves back, letting the song unfold with a soothing vocal effect that floats in the distance.  There’s a few verses, and those are treated equally as gently.  If you like what you hear, then you can head HERE to grab the new EP from Bleeding Gold Records, who continue to amaze us with their consistency.

Power Pop Fun with Wyatt Blair

wyattblairOne of the great things about hitting up a show is discovering an act you knew little about, which happened to me recently when I stumbled into the power-pop delight that is Wyatt Blair while hanging at Hotel Vegas. The band’s set was lively and quick, giving the audience enough time to sink our teeth’s into the tunes, yet wanting more.  So I got more when I picked up the new album, Banana Cream Dream, and I’ve been rocking it ever since.  The record’s filled with tunes that combine ballsy garage rock with sugary pop, which just happens to be my favorite kind. Give it a listen!

Chaos in Tejas Pick: DIIV @ Mohawk

DIIV Whiner

Date 5/30/13
Location Mohawk
Doors 7pm
Tickets $10 @ Frontgate

Chaos in Tejas is here and the little festival that could has some nice lineups to choose with starting out this evening.  An ATH approved pick for the evening would have to be the headlining DIIV show at Mohawk (despite their whiney behavior during SXSW).  The remainder of the lineup is also solid with Deep Time and SURVIVE on the outside stage and Troller, ((Pressures)), and Phantom Lakes inside.  Start the weekend off right with some great indie pop music.

Show Pics: Black Moth Super Rainbow @ The Mohawk (5/29)

Busy end of school season is upon us. So many bands coming to town and I had this one penciled on the calendar a while ago. I have only seen Black Moth Super Rainbow at festivals up to now and decided the friendly confines of The Mohawk would be the place I could get the ever elusive portrait of Tobacco behind the briefcase of Vocodery goodness.

Packed list of artists; Oscillator Bug manufacturing loops and tones, The Hood Internet mashing the hits and a little bonus coverage of locals Bike Problems.

Head past the break…

Fresh New Jam from Jacuzzi Boys

Jacuzzi_Boys_Edited_2Man, I’m getting excited by a lot of the releases coming out this summer and fall.  One of my highlights has to be Miami’s Jacuzzi Boys; they’re one of my favorite live acts too.  They’ve been quiet, relatively speaking, since releasing Glazin, but they’re prepping a new 7″ single for July 9th (via Hardly Art), which means their anticipated 3rd LP is just around the corner.  This track has a steady flow to it, calmly delivering warm guitar parts to match the vocal delivery.  I’d say there’s a fair bit of restraint in this tune, showing some growth from their last LP.  Definitely perked my ears up!

New Signing for Father/Daughter Records: Bent Shapes

bentOur friends over at Father Daughter Records have picked up a great signing with Boston’s Bent Shapes! The band’s been on my radar for a little while, having made waves with an early 7″; they specialize in creating hook-laden indie pop tunes fueled by ringing/jangling guitars.  Personally, I like the clarity of the vocals on the first single from their upcoming album Feels Weird, which will be released on August 20th.  I have a feeling you’ll be listening to this album for quite some time.
