Elizabeth Shares Parties Video

Elizabeth is one of my favorite Australian voices; she’s previously been the leader of the wonderful Totally Mild, though her attention is now 100% on her own project. This video completely captures the feelings of the track’s lyrics, showing Elizabeth isolated in the foreground while parties rage on behind her, where she misses her ex partner. I found the track has this subdued enchantment; the guitars ring carefully while the beat stays calm and steady, building the tension for the release of the chorus. Clearly, Elizabeth owns the song, drawing you in with her powerful performance…she’s just incredible. Her debut solo effort, The Wonderful World of Nature will be out on Our Golden Friend on November 1st.

ATX Band To Watch: Slideshow

Y’all know how we like to keep things rad in the ATX, so I’m quite pleased to share this track from Slideshow, who are probably your next favorite local band. They made some waves already with their track, “Midnight Language” last month and last Friday they released their debut EP by the same title. Equal parts new wave and bedroom pop, the band combines fuzzy vocals, reverb soaked guitar riffs that crash and collide infinitely over each other, and danceable bass and drum beats to make for lovely listening. This new track “Nothing To See” reminds me of the janglyness of Wild Nothing and Beach Fossils. It’s a lovely track that begs you to press repeat–keep a look out for this band in the future, as we can expect some big things for sure.

Hey New Temples Song!

Not sure how we missed the news of another highly anticipated album from our UK mates Temples, but it’s never too late to share their fantastic music. The band’s latest single “You’re Either On Something” can be found streaming below for your enjoyment. As usual, the band continues to keep things focused on true rock music with heavy, fuzzed out guitars and a super tight rhythm section.

Temples will be releasing new album Hot Motion on September 27th via ATO Records.

ATX Spotlight: Sick/Sea Drop New Video

Sick/Sea is an Austin based, indie rock trio we’ve never before featured on this here site. Pardoning our fault in not mentioning the band previously, I hope you will chick out the band’s slick new video for the single “Slowpoke”. Beautifully crafted by local director Owen Schwartzbard, the video brings to life what it feels like to carry demons of exes and past relationships into your current situation. It is beautifully executed and brings a quality not usually found in the local scene. And hey if you dig the song, it’s available on Spotify as well!

Chilled Out Bedroom Pop From Supine

Supine is the solo project of Patrick Murphy from Birmingham, UK, who also releases music with the likes of his band Violet. With Supine, he is making chilled out bedroom pop that just hits you like a ray of warm sunshine. “Change” is a buttery smooth track, with super gooey guitar riffs that melt into each other, the lovely nuances of horns towards the end, and bright bursts of synths. This track is taken from the band’s new EP, which is out today. Go over to their Bandcamp and listen to the whole thing.

Check Out This New One From Talkboy

It’s finally Friday, and as Nathan and I’s summer slowly fades away, it’s important for us to stay positive as we transition back to the working world. My new Leeds friends Talkboy have just the right track for my mood today with this new one called “All Works Out”. What makes this song great is its ability to weave around multiple genres while hitting super rising actions after slower melodies. Sometimes the female vocals sound a bit like Eisley, but then the male vocals come in to give it more of a Los Campesinos vibe. And of course, those vocal harmonies are crazy unique and downright awesome.

Talkboy will release a debut EP of new material sometime later this fall.

Parsnip Share Rip It Off Video

When watching this new Parsnip video, I honestly was perplexed; I’m still perplexed, which ultimately is the point, I reckon…to leave you thinking after you’ve watched. It’s filled with beautiful scenery, choreographed dance and Victorian-nutcracker attire crafted by Tim Burton. But, while I was mesmerized and trying to figure out what I was watching, my ears were burning with joy. Guitar lines jangle in psychedelic fashion while the rhythm section employs the proper cymbal work to keep this mystical enchantment. The Melbourne quartet will release their debut When the Tree Bears Fruit on August 30th via Trouble in Mind Records.

Welsh Lo-Fi Pop from Papur Wal

I’ve spent a lot of this year relishing in my adoration of Spanish indiepop, but I need to also remember all the various languages should enjoy as much consideration, which is how I’ve stumbled upon Welsh act Papur Wal. On the band’s latest single it’s this odd lo-fi slacker journey, sort of plodding along with indifference; it all seems just like a casual stroll down the street. But, just as you’ve settled in, someone jumps on the pedal and the song blasts off into this world of discordant pop music. It’s a fun twist that adds a nice energetic kick to the tune; the release is being handled by Libertino.

Show Preview: Jackie Venson @ One-2-One Bar, 8/2

A week after a weekend of Hot Summer Nights with most local bands playing bills would mean a bit of downtime for show-goers this weekend…if this was any other city besides Austin, TX. There’s always some live music to get into here in the ATX, and this Friday’s choice for me will be our own Jackie Venson, who just got back in town after a bit of a tour through Europe and is bringing her loop-filled eccentric bluesy indie rock to One-2-One Bar for a night of homecoming celebration. Venson released her studio album,Joy, earlier this year to much acclaim and success, growing her already cult-like following of fellow fans of crisp guitar riffs, lovely soulful vocals and a radiant stage presence. Go scoop some limited tickets to this show tomorrow night — doors are at 8:30, show starts at 9pm.

Mondo Video from Operator Music Band

Operator Music Band are working towards the release of their album Duo Duo in September, so they’ve shared another track to catch your ear. It’s interesting to me that the band get the Stereolab comparison, just because there’s a lady and some warped synth pulses; I feel like it’s more organic, almost like !!!. On this number, it’s all about that rhythmic groove, from the cymbal work to the bass lines to the synth stabs; I think the vocals even have this purposeful pulse to them. But, ultimately, that comparison for me is all about the joy, and when you get to the song’s end, you’ll feel that exuberance through your speakers. The new LP drops on September 20th via Broken Circles.
