Brand New Ephrata Tune

Seattle’s Ephrata have been hard at work on their new self-titled album, and it sounds like the efforts are going to pay off. I’ve been impressed with a few of the singles I’ve heard already, but this bouncing new tune’s going to win over a whole slew of folks. It almost carries that a classic girl group vibe, though with just a bit of haziness. That’s perfectly juxtaposed to the rhythm section kicking in some great pace and energy. They ride the track off into the pop horizon, guaranteeing a joyous ride for listeners. Look for their album on September 22nd.

The Millbrook Estates Drop New Single

Recently, rising Austin band Roaring Sun changed their name to the Timothy Leary themed The Millbrook Estates…and now they have their first single under said name. It’s precisely the sort of tune we’ve come to expect from these youngsters, delving into the pure psychedelia via washes of keys atop intricate little guitar bits. I love the understated drumming too, serving as the central nervous system for the track. Despite their age, these guys are really starting to find their groove, and hopefully that brings incredible things from them in the near future. Get lost in this tune.

New Music from Frokedal

Oslo’s Frokedal deserves your attention today. She’s just released a brand new double single, and it’s a pretty stunning two-song punch. The guitar work seems to intricate and personal, almost as if the strings are barely tickled to produce this enveloping sound. On “LTF,” I love the slight pitch raises in her voice, accompanied by some perfect accompanying bits that really make the song swell your senses. “Cracks” seems to have a more wistful bent, with a male counterpart aiding in the vocal performance. These songs seem huge, built for large audiences…though their sentiment seems quite personal. Join me in becoming a fan of Frokedal.

And Another Beaches Tune

Another day and another tune from Beaches to get us through the day. The guitar work on this track immediately stuck out to me, carrying a sentiment similar to Teenage Fanclub, just slightly a bit heavier. The vocals soar angelically, almost as if they’ve been added as another layer…it’s all about those huge riffs. Still, they provide plenty of balance to the song, allowing the group’s pop sensibility to peak through the clouds. Their new album, Second of Spring, will be released on September 8th via Chapter Music.

Have You Listened to the EFFECTS

For a lot of us, the Dischord sound is engrained in our spirit. Luckily for us, the label’s continued to release great music…and now they’re set to release the newest album by the EFFECTS. There’s almost a math-like progression to the way the guitar chords come across, and the vocals have a similarity to Theodore Leo. You’ll hear a huge wall of creativity in playing, while the style will sound familiar to those who’ve followed the label for years. Eyes to the Light was recorded with J. Robbins at the helm, and will be released on September 29th.

Wandering Folk From Floating Action

Nathan and I have been lamenting the start of the school year this week, and I’ve been searching for some tunes to help ease my burden. Helping to erase my sorrows today is this track called “Last of the Wild Cards” from Seth Kaufman and his project known as Floating Action. The song isn’t exactly some bright and sunny one to brighten your mood, it more summarizes my current feelings. It’s a little bit slow, a bit sad, and totally the slacker mentality I’m in as the weekend enters. Wandering folk. I just made that up.

Floating Action will release Is It Exquisite? on September 8th via PIAPTK and OK Recordings.

New Video from Fresh and Onlys

Tomorrow is the day we’ll all get to hear Wolf Lie Down in its entirety, but before the release, Fresh and Onlys have given us one last video/track to steer us in the right direction. There’s a Dali-esque quality to the video, with shapes bending and dripping…not to mention splicing it with creative band shots. On the track, it’s a long burner, filled with some really great guitar playing atop the steady drum pace. I really like the production on all the songs we’ve heard, which is probably while I’ll be picking up the new record tomorrow from Sinderlyn.

Another Jam from Surf Rock Is Dead

Not to long ago Surf Rock Is Dead graced our pages, and they’re here again with a brand new track for you to enjoy. Their guitar chords have this distant angular vibe, almost in a more pop-centric darkwave manner. But, the drums and bass give this track a little bounce, allowing for the vocals to playfully rise up and down in the front of the mix. Their We Have No Friends EP will be released by The Native Sound on October 6th, with the B-Side of the vinyl including the band’s first EP to round it out!

Another week, another trip to the Moody Theater for me. Honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way– when it comes to touring acts, there really is no better venue in this town to catch a big name. Tuesday night, a rather large name, or perhaps a man with a rather large mouth, came to our city to tape an episode of Austin City Limits. With all the buzz around Father John Misty and his latest album, Pure Comedy, I was interested to see what the character that Josh Tillman plays would have in store for a taping. What we got was a dialed in performance from a personae.

I Missed This Mammoth Penguins Tune

You undoubtedly are aware of my Emma Kupa fandom. It seems like this is her year…she’s already released a great Hayman Kupa Band LP, she’s playing with Suggested Friends and in the last two weeks her band Mammoth Penguins have announced their newest album, John Doe. The angular chords chopping from the get-go kick off this new tune, allowing Kupa to rock a stellar vocal performance as the rest of the group fill the track with percussion. There’s almost a shuffling boogie from the chorus, keeping listeners hooked with that sugary pop vibe. Look for the new album on October 13th via WIAIWYA.
