Show Preview: The Couch @ Mohawk (6/5/12)

Date 6/5/12
Location Mohawk
Doors 8pm
Tickets $5 @ Door

Up and comers The Couch are a band we feel everyone should really be paying attention to right now in Austin.  They’re a great band with loads of talent, not to mention a great new single “Kaiser” that’s creating all kinds of buzz in town.  Joining the group are fellow talented locals The Sour Notes and relatively unknown Summer Swells.  If anyone has a link for SS, holler.

Show Pics: Two Door Cinema Club @ Stubb’s (6/1)

So Two Door is one of those bands that I can’t help but like. Call me a sucker for Brit Pop done by Irish kids (cue snarky comment from Nathan).

But what was nice to see was Bad Veins opening for them again. They are on the local label Modern Outsider who are friends of the program.

However, the middle support sucked. Think wedding DJ meets karaoke mash-up. Oh my, it was so bad and made worse when I found out the respectable Clap Your Hands Say Yeah would be in the two-slot for the rest of the tour.

Anyway, I love these pics. Enjoy.

Show Pics: Chaos in Tejas – Ted Leo (5/31)

Chaos in Tejas is that thing when you get ready for a show by not showering.

It is also that thing where randomly selected indie-punk-pop acts get thrown on stage in between hardcore and punk bands. In this case, The Mohawk featured Nathan’s man-crush, Ted Leo, had a set between Japanese thrash by Reality Crisis and old-school punk from The Mob.

To further confuse my ears, I stopped in for a bit of Big Freedia‘s set at Club DeVille.

Show Pics: Father John Misty @ The Mohawk (5/26)

The day after Ty and Suckers, I “had to” go to The Mohawk to see Father John Misty with Har Mar Superstar and Dana Falconberry.

It was a very contrasting set of bands. Dana Falconberry‘s solemn folk melody gave way to Har Mar‘s jams and cock buffet invites led to J. Tillman’s mix of the two. To PYAITK, Father John Misty is J Tillman‘s project after leaving Fleet Foxes. He also played drums for Har Mar during their run out on the road.

It was a strange evening. And I got a decent Har Mar headstand pic, finally…

Show Pics: Suckers @ Red7 (5/25)

And so we run feature/show pic stories back to back, what? No big deal.

After the Lost In Austin session, Suckers decided they might as well play a set at Red7. We all decided to entertain Ryan and Nathan’s bromance by attending and I took some pics, naturally. I am still trying to warm up to the inside stage at Red7, my biggest gripe now being the lights. I missed Boyfrndz, caught the last bit of Young Man and was surrounded by friends for Suckers. Last Friday night was a great night.

Anyway, hit the read more for a few thoughts and pics…

Show Pics: Ty Segall @ Mohawk (5/25)

Last Friday was a disgustingly busy night of shows. The ATH crew split time between The Mohawk and Red7.

First up for show coverage is the four band line-up at The Mohawk headlined by Ty Segall. After the recent recorded collaboration, it was only natural for White Fence to back up Ty. Along for the ride were Memphis band Useless Eaters and one of my local favorites Rayon Beach.

Click through and play a little Where’s Waldo with the crowd pics…

Show Preview: Plants and Animals @ Lamberts (5/25)

Date Friday, May 25th
Location Lamberts
Doors 1000 pm
Tickets $10 from C3

With all the incredible shows in town on Friday evening, we wanted to make sure you were aware of all our favorite acts, so we got one more great suggestion for you, Plants and Animals.  The Canadian group will be making their way into town to play at Lamberts to support the release of their recent record, The End of That. In my mind, they’ve got this real classic indie rock song, but as the group’s evolved they seem to have taken on the personality of a rocking M. Ward–an interesting twist.  Opening the evening will be Papermoons, so show up early, and don’t talk ’til the band’s off the stage.

Show Preview: Ty Segall/White Fence @ the Mohawk (5/25)

Date Friday, May 25th
Location Mohawk
Doors 800 pm
Tickets $10 from Transmission

Tons of great shows on Friday night, but the one you’ll find me hitting up is Ty Segall and White Fence over at the Mohawk.  Ty’s got to be one of the busiest people in the business, releasing his latest album, Hair, with White Fence just this past month, then turning around to release another as the Ty Segall Band in just a bit.  Garage rock and glory are all his.  It’ll be interesting to see if Tim from White Fence plays a solo set, or if he’s just going to rock with Ty the whole night, or if they’ll trade back and forth.  You can also catch some great acts opening the night up, with Rayon Beach and Useless Eaters kicking things off the right way.  It’s going to be a rock n’ roll fueled night, but this is your friendly reminder to not talk at the show, please.

Show Preview: Suckers @ Red 7 (5/25)

Date 5/25/12
Location Red 7
Doors 900p
Tickets $8 @ Frontgate

We’ve been looking forward to these guys coming back into town for quite some time now and we’re pleased to let everyone know that amigos Suckers are stopping into Austin on Friday night at Red 7.  As having seen this band live on more than one occasion, I can honestly tell you that $8 is well worth the cost.  Also entertaining your ears for the evening is boy genius Young Man and psych pop group Boyfrndz.  We’ll be there and so should you.
