To be perfectly honest, I didn’t know much about Canada based Young Empires prior to sending off these interview questions. While doing a little bit of research on the group, I found myself jamming to their brand of new wave/dance music similar to The Rapture or even Cut Copy. It’s now always my thing, but SXSW can definitely bring out the inner dance child inside. After the jump you can find interview questions from Jacob Palahnuk, bass player for the band.
Yukon Blonde continue are SXSW interviews today. The band, while never featured on our site, are a worthy garage rock/punk band that you’ll definitely want to give a listen to this week during the festival. Band member John Jeffry was kind enough to answer our round of SXSW questions and his answers can be found after the jump.
Most unfortunate, the approval to shoot Radiohead didn’t come through. All was not lost as friends of Austin Town Hall, Other Lives, were opening. Into the bowels of the Erwin Center I headed to get shots of a band that everyone should experience live.
And should I mention I saw Major Applewhite again? Yeah, I did. He was kicking it with Manny Diaz.

As I regroup and prepare my brain for a second night of Radiohead mania, I wanted to reflect a bit on our evening the Moody Theater. Getting be one of the relative few that got to go, I carried a bit of reverence into the venue, no doubt one of the smallest they will play on this or any tour. I was soon disappointed that not all concert-goers shared this feeling of privilege.

It’s crazy that Sub Pop just released this track by their newest signee, King Tuff, because I just bought the 3 7″ singles collection from Suicide Squeeze yesterday afternoon. KT used to jam with Happy Birthday, and he’s been banging around on his own for a long time as well. The label will be releasing his self-titled debut on May 29th of this year, and I’m pretty sure you’re going to have a lot of fun jamming out to this. Garage rock with hooks galore, just like the track we’ve got featured for you below!

I believe that the blogosphere is quite abuzz with Grimes. Canadian Claire Boucher is working hard right now, she is in demand. That is why the relatively small space afforded by Lambert’s must have been an early, but fortunate, booking. It was fortunate because it was such an intimate space for Grimes and openers Born Gold, but unfortunate because more could have said that they got to see her before SxSW this year.
There were sound issues, weird and then no lighting, props galore for the opener, shoulder to shoulder dancing and many happy fans. Buzz.

Those of you that didn’t see me raving yesterday about the excellent new EP from Shivery Shakes, then you should definitely check out our REVIEW. But, for those of you also looking for a great local show, you need to head to the ND on Saturday night. You’ll get the jangling sun-pop of Shivery Shakes, not to mention a chance to grab their EP, but you also get to see some other local acts like Sleep Good and Burgess Meredith. BOY, who I’ve heard wonderful things about, will also be joining the festivities. Oh, and the first 50 through the door can grab a cool package with a poster, EP, and buttons included!

It’s that time again folks, time for SXSW and another awesome show by yours truly here at ATH. This year we’re teaming up with our amigos over at local label Sonora Records to bring what is arguably the best SXSW show around. We’ve got a sweet lineup that’s been worked on behind the scenes for months now with some equally incredible local sponsors. Here are the deets on the show after the jump.
I’m honestly not really sure what Fashion Freakout 5 really entails, other than the fact that some of Austin’s vintage stores will be setting up shop in some fashion or another over at the Mohawk. What I do want to highlight are the excellent bands that will be holding it down for you all night, with some of the best in Austin’s punk/rock scene. You’ll get our performance favorites in OBN IIIs, but you’ll also get bright newcomers in Fleshlights (they put out an excellent release in 2011), not to mention A Giant Dog. The doors open at 7 PM, and if you haven’t gotten your hands on a ticket yet, you can pick one up at the door for $12. It’s an excellent weekend for local Austin music, so please attend!
