We have a little bonus show coverage today…

Wanting to run light, I grabbed the camera and mounted the smallest and lightest lens I have to go be amongst the EBM family the filled The Mohawk on a Tuesday night. That crowd was there to see Front 242, legends in the dark electro game, credited among the founders of the EBM scene. If you do not know of Front 242, shame on you.

I’ve had a good run of nostalgia lately. Perhaps I could keep the streak alive? Maybe not, but it wasn’t the band’s fault. Click through for a couple comments about the openers and the legends with pics from the crowd.

Show Pics: OMD played Emo’s (4/6)

I mentioned that OMD was playing a sold out show at Emo’s in a Have A Nice Weekend post last Friday. I stressed that of all the bands that were formative to new wave that still influences so many bands today, the only one touring right now with the same level of love for their music, past and present, is Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark. They are touring in support of their recent release The Punishment of Luxury, which if you haven’t given a shot, you might want to.

In addition to their hit after hit set, OMD brought along GGOOLLDD, some fun indie pop stuff that you can dance to, with outfits and poppy fun.

Show Review: Khruangbin + The Mattson 2 @ The Mohawk (3.30.18)

Aside from the inevitable grooves, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the Khruangbin show at Mohawk on Friday night, afterwards it became very clear. It was my first time to see the trio live and here’s my three main takeaways: 1.) Nobody is still quite sure how to pronounce the name…and just forget spelling it correctly, 2.) That 70’s inspired psych jams from Southeast Asia and the Middle East can induce a dance party in ATX for the ages, 3.) That something with roots so strikingly foreign to Texas (and even today’s stateside music scene in general) can come across as spellbindingly authentic. All that and more after the jump. Read more

Show Pics: Cut Copy @ Stubb’s (3/29)

Last weekend started off with a dance party. Friday may have been the single nicest day of the year; it was like nature was air conditioned. What better way to celebrate than with a show at Stubb’s? How about a little Cut Copy to add to that pleasantry? How about a solid opener like Kauf?

The show wasn’t a total sell out, but it got close which is not really surprising given they were at SxSW. Cut Copy was sharing some new jams surrounded by all the hits. This was the second date of the actual tour after a few small fest sets and aforementioned SxSW action.

Show Preview: Cut Copy Plays Stubb’s Tonight

If you don’t know anything about me, know that I will go see Cut Copy any chance I get. Of non-Austin bands, I’d say they are the one band I have seen more times than any other. That kinda snuck up on me. Sure, they played one exclusive party during SxSW and did some DJ sets, but tonight, they play Stubb’s, the unofficial home of Cut Copy in America. I am curious if they are just hanging about, playing Dallas last night, but being almost two weeks removed from SxSW, you have to wonder if they were doing some recording here?

But they are the known here. How about I give some love to the opener? Kauf has been in and out of The Bucket playlist over on Soundcloud. I use that playlist to mix newer faves into other playlists when entertaining. The song featured below is called “Pacify”, a song with an understated elegance that builds, ebbs and peaks before release; Nicole shared it on ATH in late 2016. Maybe also check out “A Ruin”. Hopefully, it will push you over the edge to pick up a ticket, show up early and dance with us.

The 2018 Buckaroo Ball at SXSW (3/14)

Our good friend Mike has been coming in every year from Scotland, and the last few years, he’s put together a great show featuring folks from his home country; he’s dubbed it the Buckaroo Ball. This year he returns to Hotel Vegas for the party; things will kick off at 7 PM sharp! There are tons of great bands, several of whom have made some huge waves in the US already…with a couple others worthy of attendance. Shopping and Catholic Action will be big draws for you, but don’t miss out on Breakfast Muff, Lylo, Lucia and Tijuana Bibles. The Scottish scene is hugely influential in our indie rock scene, both past and present, so go get yourself a little taste! You’ll find some hits after the jump!

SXSW Interview: Gothic Tropic

More SXSW interviews, all the time, all day, every day. As you can see, we are not messing around with the interviews this year leading up to the festival. I think Nathan and I have rather enjoyed seeing what all these bands have to say about our town and our festival. What I dig most about it is seeing the overwhelming amount of positivity each band brings even if they are on a long tour or a few days between a solid meal. If you thought our SXSW interviews were anywhere near over, man are you totally wrong. Nathan and I went crazy this year and sent these things out to tons of bands we admire and respect. Heck with still several days until music kicks off next week, I think we’re already over our total number of interviews from last year. Gotta hustle.
