Perhaps you want to carefully venture downtown and catch some live music?  You’re lucky, as the local bands are bringing you some great line-ups all over the map this weekend.  Here’s  a quick look at where you can go. Show Pics: Orthy @ The Living Room (5/25)

OrthyA little end the work week viewing…

When it came time to figure out what to do the night before the Holiday last Monday, we figured something relaxing, maybe a little fancy, friends, etc. How about Orthy and Royal Forest playing the W’s Living Room Live series? Drink specials? Sure. Couches, awesome! We even made dinner reservations before hand. I wore shorts that weren’t cut down from longer origins.

Our friend asked if my little camera that joined us was one of the black & white specialty types, which keyed me to shoot the night in monochrome. Why not? I was “on vacation”

ATH Abroad: Primavera Sound

psblack

While we here at ATH usually like to stick to local coverage, sometimes it’s hard to hide that what we’re really after is world domination. This Thursday, Friday, and Saturday I’ll be in Barcelona, Spain to bring you coverage of Primavera Sound 2014, whose sick lineup and stunning location was enough to lead me outside Austin for a bit. While you can look out for live tweets and festival recaps starting Thursday, I wanted to give you a brief preview of some under the radar bands that would be easy to overlook in all the big names at Primavera. Check out my top ten must see bands that you may be unfamiliar with after the jump.

Show Pics: True Sincerity Party @ Cheer Up (5/23)

Cheer UpTrue Sincerity Vol 1 is out, an interview zine by our friends Bryan Parker. There was a free show to commemorate and we were able to get on the guest list (along with everyone else).

For my troubles, I caught Borrisokane, Feverbones, a song of Alex Napping and blisteringly fun set by Major x 3. I missed Tele Novella cuz I got sleepy; it was a long week. As Nate predicted, it w\as a night to enjoy local revelry and celebrate the creativity of like-minded individuals in town.

Leave a comment about the band you’re most looking forward to at Fun Fun Fun Fest 2014. I’ll pick my winner from there. Click HERE for the line-up.  Contest ends Monday at 12 Noon.

Show Preview: Curtin @ Lamberts (5/23)

1618257_628191577260497_705601427_oThere’s tons of events going on in town this weekend, but we wanted to point you in the direction of this secret little gem that might not have gotten your attention otherwise. Curtin is a two-piece who craft this sparse folk-influenced rock; some of their songs lean more in the direction of experimenting within the genre, while other tracks offer up more traditional fare. The group is touring to promote their album, One for the Doghearted. But, just because you can’t have a show without great locals, be sure to get there early, as the line-up includes two of our favorite friends, The Midgetmen and Ram (formerly of Whitman).  Sample the tune below to get a feel of what to expect.

Show Preview: The Rich Hands Album Release @ Hotel Vegas (

richhands

Date Saturday. May 24th
Location Hotel Vegas
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $5

One of our favorite acts of the last few months, and really for the last several has been San Antonio’s The Rich Hands.  We caught up with them before they came to kick it in Austin for SXSW, and we’ve covering their singles leading up to the release of Out of My Head.  Good news! Not only is the album out, but they’ll also be celebrating its release this Saturday night at Hotel Vegas.  They’ll be joined by ATH faves, Grape St, as well as other acts we support like Lochness Mobsters, Rolland Hazzard, Mitch Frazier and His Radiation.  The show’s cheap, and the music’s great. Be sure to buy the album from the band…gas to San Antonio is expensive!

Show Preview: A. Sinclair @ Mohawk (TONIGHT!!)

asinclairOut of the ashes of two great bands, come two new great bands.  And perhaps it wasn’t even ashes, but a change in direction, which has brought us A. Sinclair (frmly Frank Smith) and Otis the Destoryer (frmly the Couch).  Both bands will be releasing EPs tonight over at the Mohawk, which is a definite reason to show your face.  A. Sinclair are offering up their Pretty Girls EP, and Otis the Destroyer are offering us the Dark Arts EP.  We consider both bands to be two of the top acts in town, though admittedly that list is growing and growing.  Plus, because you have to have great openers, the bands have chosen Chasca and the Docs to open the night up.  You should definitely stop by this evening…there isn’t a better option out there.   The show starts at 10 inside, right after the Red Fang show.

The temperature in town is heating up, and that means summer time rock shows are on their way.  We’ve got a great show for you to hit up tonight, featuring the much-talked about NYC band, Skaters.  They blow into town with a fresh bit of pop rock, supporting the release of their brand new album, Manhattan.  But, as if an adored band wasn’t enough, the bill will feature local heavy-hitters, Shivery Shakes and Grape St.  Both acts are growing forces in the local scene, and both are in the final stages of finishing new albums…we’ll share more on that later.
