Show Preview: Destroyer @ The Belmont (11.19)

destroyer

Date Tuesday, November 19th
Location The Belmont
Doors 7:00 PM
Tickets $15 from Ticketfly

Next week we will be gifted the pleasure of a new album from Dan Bejar, the man behind Destroyer.  Well, it’s Five Spanish Songs, so you won’t likely get an entire album’s worth of new material, but five songs alone is enough.  He’ll likely be bringing those tunes to Austin on Tuesday night, which makes sense considering four of the tracks are sung entirely in Spanish, our honorary secondary language.  You won’t want to miss the show, regardless, as Dan’s such a talented performer that it makes it difficult to take your eyes off him.  He’ll be joined by the always entertaining John Wesley Coleman, so you can grab a bit of local flavor while you’re at it.  See you there? Sounds good to me.

FFF8 In Pictures – Saturday Edition

BleachedSaturday featured legends and legendary performances, though usually not at the same time. Johnny Jewel gets best performance of the day with double duty killer jams from Chromatics and a manic dance party with Glass Candy. MIA eludes me. I just don’t get it, but okay, the kids like to here abbreviated beats up and down. Ice-T let Bushwick Bill freestyle. Deerhunter had the most epic sound check ever, reconstructing “Marquee Moon” to test the levels.

This giant photo post features Frank Smith (kinda), Ola Podrida, Bleached, The Impossibles, White Lung, Chromatics, Geographer, Glass Candy, Television, Tycho, Deerhunter, MIA, Ice-T and The Descendants. Click through…

Show Review: Nine Inch Nails ACL Taping (11.4)

NIN @ ACL TVBased on the throngs of people begging for tickets oustide of Moody Theater, Monday night’s taping at ACL Live was a pretty hot commodity. Myself, well, again I was fighting to reclaim my youth by revisiting the catalogue of Nine Inch Nails.

The folks at ACL should definitely be proud of bringing in Nine Inch Nails for a taping.  Sure, they’re huge in the grand scheme of things, though not necessarily the largest act to grace the studio.  But, what it did represent was the power behind the PBS program, as the importance of the show continues to grow with each act that comes to the venue.  It also allowed for many of us to get a version of Nine Inch Nails that me mightn’t have seen otherwise.

Read on for my thoughts on the evening…

Show Review: Cults @ Emo’s (11.4)

Monday night gave you lots of choices as for live music in this city, but it didn’t seem like Emo’s was the popular choice for many, as even with the full venue partitioned in half the crowd wasn’t close to capacity. However this lack of audience wasn’t a problem once the bands for the night took the stage, each offering a different kind of tone and energy.

Show Preview: Laura Marling @ Central Presbyterian Church (11.6)

LauraMarlingTOX240111

Date Wednesday, November 6th
Location Central Presbyterian Church
Doors 8:00 PM
Tickets $20-25 from C3

I first found myself drawn to the voice of Laura Marling when she participated in the original line-up of Noah and the Whale, but since her departure from the group, she’s only continued to rise to fame.  Her most recent album, Once I Was an Eagle, has received praise all over the world, offering listeners a chance to absorb her passionate take on stripped down folk music.  I couldn’t envision a better place to catch her than at the Central Presbyterian Church, where her voice is sure to soar into the balcony.  She’ll be joined by opener Willy Mason, adding to the nights powerful line-up.

Show Preview: Nobunny @ Red 7 (11.4)

Nobunny

Date Monday, November 4th
Location Red 7
Doors 9 PM
Tickets $12 @ the Door

So you’re bummed you didn’t get to see the Nine Inch Nails taping, or you don’t feel like going all the way East to catch Cults? Well, the best option out of all of these is still going to be the Nobunny show at Red 7.  Nobunny’s just released Secret Songs, and he’ll be bringing his sweaty live show to our local haunt in hopes of encouraging a joyous riot.  He’ll also be joined by one of my absolute favorite local bands, Pharaohs, which pretty much guarantees that you’re night’s going to be super rad, regardless of what plans you had. Hope to see you there.
