Punk Rock Weekend @ the Mohawk with Lucero and ALL

acl_luceroMan, I’m bummed I’m going to be out of town this weekend, as the Mohawk line-up is killing it.  First, Friday night features Lucero, who may not exactly be purveyors of punk due to their folk sound.  But, you can’t tell me vocalist Ben doesn’t have that raspy punk pull in his voice.  And, if you want to stick around, East Cameron Folkcore will tear it up inside…who also have a vocal likeness to my punk heritage.  And, if that wasn’t enough on Friday, Saturday night you can see the great ALL.  The group is more or less the Descendents, just with singers that aren’t named Milo. I have a feeling Scott Reynolds will be taking vocal duties this weekend. Seriously, the 1-2 weekend punch is ridiculous; I’d probably just camp out at the bar if they let me.  Please help me feel good about Austin and go to one, if not both of these shows!

Friday night: Lucero w/ J. Charles and the Trainrobbers and Cartright – Doors @ 8 PM – Tickets

Saturday night: ALL, MOD  and many more – Doors @ 4 PM – Tickets

SxSW Releases Music Schedule

We tweeted out earlier that SxSW released the last batch of wristbands other than the week-ofs that we be available at Waterloo and a few of the venues.

Along with those, other big news landed with the formal release of the Music schedule. You can now peruse the lineups, start stalking artists and getting in line for the big artists at the small venues. The other cool thing is to see the little suspect gaps in venue nightly lineups, such as the hour before The Polyphonic Spree at Red7 Tuesday.

News announcement here. Play with your schedule here.

Show Review: The xx @ ACL Live (2/11)

When The XX announced their Austin show, tickets were virtually gone within minutes, forcing the band to add another show immediately.  Such is the demand and the hype associated with the British group after the release of their album, Coexist.  They brought friends Austra to town with them, giving listeners a glimpse at the operatic IDM realm.

Read on for some thoughts on the evening and pics.

Show Pics: Another Holy Mountain Night (2/9)

Got another big batch of pics for you, this time from the show we helped out with over at Holy Mountain.

Pretty random lineup, Grape St. shimmied their way in first and put down another solid set of jams with some schtick and banter. Residual Kid played above their age group again; I think these kids should consider quitting their day jobs. Finally, The Calm Blue Sea gently took things by the scruff of the neck only to slap us around a little with their wall of sound.

I’ll talk briefly and share pics after the break.

Show Preview: The XX @ ACL Live (2/11-12)

Date 2/11-2/12
Location ACL Live
Doors 6:30pm
Tickets Tonight/Tomorrow

Ticket Link Warning – If you don’t mind sitting behind a speaker, you can still get a ticket to either night’s show.

Indie darlings of moody sparseness, The XX are coming to town to play two nights and ACL Live. Austin Town Hall will be present tonight to give you all the lowdown on the show to see if you should sell your soul to go tomorrow night. A lot of people are way into Romy’s soft vocal, but the best song on the latest effort, IMHO, is the more upbeat, primarily Jamie XX-vocaled “Fiction”. Digress.

Now, The XX are cool and all, but to be honest, the openers Austra have spent more time on my playlists over the past couple years. I am looking forward to their set after having seen them at FFF6 in the broad daylight, not the best environment for their beauty-electro goodness. So here is a track to get you in the doors before their set starts at 8pm…

Show Review: A Night @ Holy Mountain

We wanted to put more coverage towards the locals this year and our friend Glen Brown was going to be at the Red Bull Sound Select show at Holy Mountain earlier this week. He offered up some thoughts and shots, so we were like “yeah, do that” and he was like “OK, I will” and we were like “that’s gnarly”. So we have a little love for Gentlemen Rogues, The Sour Notes, Not In The Face and Ume.

Click through for Glen’s notes and plenty of pics. I should have gone. You should have gone. We should have gone.

Show Review: Toro Y Moi @ Emo’s (2/2)

Finally caught up on processing pics. This latest round is for Toro Y Moi playing Emo’s East with Dog Bite and Wild Belle opening.

I will summarize the review here, so this is goodbye.

I am pretty sure I first saw Toro Y Moi at SxSW three years ago during a day party inside at The Mohawk, delighted by the hazy electronic goodness. The next time was his opening shot for Caribou at Emo’s outside. That was a stellar show. Next go was outside at The Mohawk as a headliner, a show we were very meh about. This is it for me; the big house at Emo’s, weird vibes from a sold out crowd, cell phones galore (including in the photo pit), bros yelling song names.

Read on for dark pics and a few more thoughts…
