Show Preview: The People’s Temple @ the Mohawk (9.17)

Date Monday, September 17th
Location Mohawk
Doors 9 PM
Tickets $9 at the Door

There’s pretty much a great show to attend every night of this week, so if you’re a die-hard rock n’ roller, you should probably start your week off right over at the Mohawk.  The People’s Temple are one of the bands I stumbled upon a few years back, and I’ve been following them pretty closely since then.  They recently put out a great new 7″ on Hozac Records, and that’s only made me more excited to hear their psychedelic garage rock this Monday evening.  Opening the show will be Dead Space and Foreign Mothers, helping to round out a pretty noteworthy evening at one of our favorite spots.

Show Preview: Thee Oh Sees @ La Zona Rosa (9.15)

Date Saturday, September 15th
Location La Zona Rosa
Doors 8 PM
Tickets $15 @ La Zona Rosa

This is by and large the show of the week. Sure, Thee Oh Sees and Ty Segall have both made their way through town several times in the last few months, but I don’t think a single person that’s caught these two acts will tell you they wouldn’t willingly see the band over and over again.  Plus, the new record from Thee Oh Sees, Putrifiers II, is pretty killer, so hopefully we’ll get some new jams live in their set, not to mention Ty guests on it, so he’ll probably guest on stage.  And if you need another reason, check out locals Gal Pals and Fleshlights rocking things out in true Austin fashion.  Looks like I just gave you plans for Saturday night.

Show Preview: Politics @ Mohawk (9.14)

Date Friday, September 14th
Location Mohawk
Doors 1100 pm
Tickets $5 at the Door

You want to know how the Twin Shadow set went? Well, you can hear from everyone in attendance if you show up at 11 to catch two of the hottest acts in Austin.  The after party is being hosted by the Mohawk, featuring both Politics and Orthy.  Personally, I dig them both, but Orthy has been really impressing us over at ATH with their live sets.  It’s going to be a cheap night where you can file into the bar, dance a little bit, and leave feeling like you might have caught the best show in town that no one was talking about. Don’t believe me? Show up; you’ll see.

Show Preview: Swans @ La Zona Rosa (9.14)

Date Friday, September 14th
Location La Zona Records
Doors 800 pm
Tickets $23 from Frontgate

So you’re super bummed you couldn’t get into the sold out Twin Shadow show at Mohawk? Well, one of the next best things has to be catching Swans play over at La Zona Rosa on the same night.  The Bear, the band’s most recent album, has received incredible reviews all over the Internet, and I can promise you that it’s deserved praise, and might even be a bit of an understatement; it’s an absolutely incredible piece of work.  Opening the night will be the always popular Xiu Xiu, so you can make a great night out of your music fandom after all.

Show Pics: Pujol @ Stubb’s (9/7)

Final bit of catch up from last Friday. Pujol played Stubb’s.

In a way, Slash opened for them. The outside was over run by rock and/or roll played loudly, Myles Kennedy a far better technical vocalist than that guy with funny hair and a cat face that wrecked GnR. Cell phones abounded for the rousing closer, “Paradise City”. …and then Pujol started playing inside.

Quite a few partiers came in from outside to check out the Nashville trio, hearing the big power jams about home and girls and stuff. So peep the pics and read a couple more words after the break.

Closing time: All entries must be received by Thursday at 3pm.

To be clear, this is for the show on September 14th (Friday) and not the Saturday show.  Please remember to leave a valid email in the blank so we can get in touch with you.  Rock on.

Show Pics: Tycho & The Album Leaf @ Red7 (9/7)

Friday was a busy night. On my agenda, Pujol, Ariel Pink, Tycho and The Album Leaf.

Tycho asked The Album Leaf join them (him) on tour. This is a seriously good bill for any fan of mid-to-down tempo, beautifully crafted songs. To get to see both on the same night was a treat. It was impressive that the show sold out despite being in the larger space outdoors at Red7. Quick polling told me that the crowd was actually half and half as to who they were there to see, maybe Tycho in the lead. I guarantee that both bands gained fans.

Click through for a few thoughts and plenty of pics. Projectors are fun.

Free In-Store with Will Johnson (9/11)

You know that everyone here at ATH loves Will Johnson, so of course we’re going to take a little bit of time out of the day to celebrate his most recent release, Scorpion.  In honor of his release, Will will be playing a free set at 5 PM on Tuesday, September 11th, over at Waterloo Records here in town, and I’m sure it’s going to be intimate and charming.  The new record is full of great tunes that I hope everyone enjoys, so we’ll post this track again in hopes that you’ll leave work right on time to catch Will’s set.
