This is fine.
With more show pics and a review coming later this week from their Austin show, I’m going to focus more on my overall Marfa experience culminating with the Dirty Projectors show at the Crowley Theatre. I’ll be as brief as I can since the Marfa experience is really something best witnessed first hand and not by an amature blogger who happens to love a great show. Follow the jump for my thoughts and some photos by contributor Mair.Heard.
Supergroup? I guess to many of us, Divine Fits would qualify.
Dan Boeckner of Wolf Parade/Handsome Furs, Sam Brown of New Bomb Turks and that one guy in Spoon. To get things going after holing up and recording the pending A Thing Called Divine Fits due 8/28, the band decided to do a home town tour hitting Austin, Montreal and Columbus. Austin got to be first, a sneaky show a Continental Club preceded this one. But this was the first night they officially played a show.

As Red 7 continues the weekend with their anniversary shows, they’ve got what I personally think is the best line-up in town. You’ve got to get there early because three of the hottest rock n’ roll acts in Texas will be opening things up. You’ll get Fleshlights, James Arthur’s Manhunt, and my personal favorite Mind Spiders. The Spiders recent record Meltdown is still killing it on my record player, and their live show is always a blast. And the finale finishes strong with Obits closing the night out. The band is fronted by Rick Froberg of Drive Like Jehu/Hot Snakes fame, and that alone makes it a show you can’t afford to miss. Hope we see you there!

It’s the 6th year for local venue Red 7, and they’ve got an absolutely killer weekend of shows for you. It all starts off Friday with some of our favorite acts playing their second show of the week at the club. The Coathangers will be the headliner on the evening, with the three girls bring their onslaught to the stage. They’ll be accompanied by Jaill, one of my personal favorites, playing songs from their recent album, Traps. You’ll also get local boys The Golden Boys starting off the night in the right fashion. It’s going to be a great week for Red 7, so be sure to get out and show the venue some love.

BUMP: We’re really stoked to be working with C3 this week to put on a great show over at Stubbs! Two of our favorite bands will be rocking the venue that night for the cheap price of $8; you’ll get to see Saint Motel and Races. Saint Motel just released Voyeur, which is one of the best pop rock records of the year, and Races are still out supporting Year of the Witch. I can’t think of a better show to get your rock on this week, so we’re proud to be sponsor the gig. And in doing so, we’re giving away a pair of tickets to one lucky person. All you have to do is leave your favorite Olympian in the comment section (you know, to keep with the times), and we’ll pick our winner from there. I’m sure this show probably doesn’t need much of an introduction, as it’s one of the hottest tickets around, but we thought we’d give you a friendly reminder about one of the big shows coming into town on Thursday. If you’ve recovered from Divine Fits at Beerland, you should definitely check out Dirty Projectors, the indie art-pop act who’ve been making waves pretty much since their inception. They come into town fresh off the recent release of Swing Lo Magellan, their latest record. And as if that wasn’t enough, you can also, and should, catch the marvelous opening duo, Wye Oak. It’s been awhile since Civilian came out, but just hearing those songs live brings everything back to life. We’ll definitely see you there folks!

Back to the friendly confines, Mohawk’s inside stage played host to the Mynabirds touring with locals Deep Time. Another local band My Jerusalem used the opening slot.
It was a cool mix. The outside show with Murder By Death as headliner had a comfortable crowd, some of which stayed behind for the inside show which added to the crowd but it was never “crowded”. The night felt like a showcase or label party. Calm, plenty of friendly faces, the kind of show you can go to solo and just have fun in the crowd.

The end of the week here in Austin is jam packed with killer shows, so you better start your night off the right way with a free show over at Trailer Space Records. As always, it’s BYOB, with donations encouraged to help out the bands. You’ll get to see Jaill, who just released the excellent Traps on Sub Pop, so there’s some solid pedigree (they’ll also play the following night at Red 7). You can also catch The Coathangers, who just released a solid 7″ with Suicide Squeeze for the singles club, plus opening the night is Austin’s own John Wesley Coleman. It’s free, it’s early, and you can buy records. No excuse not to see it.

Back in the friendly confines where All Are Welcome, Friday night’s program featured local up and comers, a band strengthening their reputation and a duo throwing a full on dance party. The end of the night I walked away spent because it was ninety-something at show time and a sold out sweaty mob.
Orthy took the early crowd over, Chromatics were amazing and Glass Candy, well you are going to have to click through to get the details. …and plenty of pics.

Tons of great acts are playing in town on Saturday night, but here’s where we have our eyes set. Mynabirds sweep into town fresh off the release of their sophomore record, Generals; it’s been called enchanting, but most of all, it’s been called good. Personally, I’m stoked to see Deep Time, a band that really deserves some Austin love, seeing as they’re from our hometown. They just put out their latest, Deep Time, on Hardly Art, and it grows on my the more I listen to it. But, be sure to get there early because another great Austin act, My Jerusalem will be opening the night up. And I’ll be honest, if you live in Austin and aren’t at a show on Saturday night, give yourself an F. Unless you have kids. Then a D since I gave you at least a day’s notice to get a sitter.
